( I tried the z-copy method and it failed with the following error message: " Not a closed polygon or CLine, element ignored". Also, I could not find the option Shape -> Compose Shape in PCB editor 17.4)

So there are a couple of things. First you want to have a "Board Outline" In allegro/orcad this is a "Shape" and it is on the board geometry Class > Outline or board outline sub class. Basically this is completely enclosed.

1

Import your DXF Outline and put it on the "Board Geometry" Class > "Assembly_Detail Class" Next go to the board geometry options and verify that your board geometry layer for the board geometry outline is turned on. In the find filter turn on everything so you can select objects.

2

The next step will create a shape out of that imported DXF. Go to edit Z-Copy. In the options pane choose "Board Geometry Outline or "Board Outline" depending on your Allegro Ver. Window select the DXF outline and right click done

to complete it.

3

To verify you now have a viable board outline turn off the Assembly Detail Layer/Class. You should see your Board outline now. If you hover the mouse over it's edge you should see it is a complete shape.

The operation to create your route keepin is the same except after Z-Copy your options will be "RouteKeepin" All class. So Z-COPY your DXF outline to the routekeepin Class. When you do that you will find a route keepin shape has

been created from your DXF as in step 2 from that outline that resides on the Assembly_Detail Layer-Class.

The last thing to do is Reduce the size of the newly created route keepin shape. To do this window select the shape. Right Click and choose Expand/Contract. In the options pane use the + or - buttons to reduce it by the size you want.

If you do everything correct you should see the routekeepin inside that board outline. If you decide to pour some copper later on inside the board outline it will not go beyond the route keepin. To get a hang for the mechanics of this it may be easier to turn off layers so you can easily see the newly created objects after using the z-copy command. Having different layer colours too can help.

Here is a pic to illustrate what it can look like. Notice the board outline in pink with the keepin inside of that and then a copper pour on the top layer that does not extend beyond the board outline.

A problem with a lot of the tips out there refer to the "Legacy Menu" option where "Shape->Compose Shape" is. You can set your menu system to legacy or you can use the operation "Shape->Create Shape from Lines"

I know how to hide/unhide shapes at all - outline and filling, where the filling can be set as transparent in Color Dialog. But I would like to hide only shape outlines, because they are not coupled with transparency settings of shapes and stay really bright. In fact, EVERY bright, 1px thin line over the board in PCB designer strongly reduces clarity.. Thanks for response.

Try Setup - User Preferences - unsupported and enable shape_layer_visibility_env then Apply and restart the tools. This will give you a Shp checkbox in the visibility pane that will toggle the Shape display on/off.

Hi steve, thank you for reply, but I already done this in ENV file - this checkbox hide/unhide complete shapes - filling AND outline, but I need to hide outline only, because outline of shape is 100% bright and is not affected by transparency settings in Color Dialog/Display.

Disabling "Bound" did not help, because "Bound" and "real shape outline" are two different things. What I would like to see on PCB in Designer is the transparent shape filling only, without bright non-transparent 1px line around every copper shape I drawn, like in EAGLE or Altium..

Hi Haldor, this information looks super useful. I am brand new to think and trying to create a dog tag that is engraved. Any suggestions on how I would do that? I need to know how to cut out the shape of the dog tag, and then engrave on it. Youtube has been zero help!

Hey Seth! I was able to figure out more of what I had questions about. One last question, what type of bit would you recommend if I am trying to make a dog tag from 22 gauge stainless steel? I am having a hard time figuring out which is best for smooth edges.

I'm working on a project in Illustrator and everything was working normally before, but after about 3 minutes of working without the internet, Illustrator started acting up and I'm not sure how to fix it. Normally, when I'm trying to move a shape or object, it moves that shape or object; now, Illustrator is instead moving the outline of that shape/object while leaving the shape/object in its original location. Once I release the button, it moves the shape/object to wherever the outline is, but because of the way I'm trying to build the image, I need to see the object itself is aligning the way I want it to. When I go with the outline, it often has a slight skew to it when it's placed so it's inhibiting more than assisting right now. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I've tried to animate a circle outline but though it looks like it's working the result of the mask is quite different. As such it looks like the outline goes from the center and out. It simply scales from small and then at last fram it's so big it's scaled out of the picture.

But when I combine the outline mask with the background image I can see that the mask is not only the outline but acutally covers the entire circle. So in effect I might have just animated an expanding circle where I was trying to animate only the outline to make it look like a ripple wave going over my picture.

Taking away the Outline default shape, without question has to be the worst update to the Edit feature within the Photos app. I understand that you can draw an outline quickly with your finger, while keeping pressed down on the screen, and it will create an outline....BUT you cannot the edit the color or size of this outline...or move it to a more specific outline location on the photo. And to select the outline within the "Shapes" feature, involves several more insane steps of selecting outline color, then Opacity...and then still not certain as to which one is which. I cannot comprehend why and Outline shape was replaced with a completely filled in square or rectangle. Why not just have the Outline shape, as a Default shape?? Or it at least allow us to Customize one and/or Save that as our Favorite shapes???

It used to be a LOT easier to make a simple rectangular 'outline' - to say, make a rectangle around something one wants to highlight. One also used to be able to make an arrow point in any direction one wanted. Now that appears to be impossible, or if it's possible, Apple doesn't make it easy anymore.

I am unable to get shapes inMarkup feature in photos that are not all black and obliterate the feature i had the shape over. Any ideas? Why does Apple make things more complex everytime they do an update. I held back on installing it because i knew it was going to create a problem somewhere. It sure has. So frustrated. Repeat- the Markup feature now has shapes that blockout ( dark grey or black) and coverup the area you want identified by an opaque shape on a photo.

Walt, you tap "Edit" at upper right of the iPhone display, when you are viewing a photo enlarged on iOS 17. It has to be a regular photo, not a Live Photo. For special media kinds the controls are different.

I would like to produce a 3D view of a board with a complex outline, but I get multiple errors of the type above. I have moved the end of each line segment to snap to the green node symbol on the end of the adjacent line segment and checked that the coordinates match, but still get the same error.

I opened your file, exported the Edge cuts layer as svg, then imported the svg file into the Edge cuts layer of my design, but the result had no straight lines, only closed arc segments corresponding to the arcs in the original. Importing then exporting to my drawing package, CorelDraw, made no difference.

In Draw, I have imported a vector outline and saved it as ODG. When I try to fill it with a simple color, the entire canvas is filled. How do I tell Draw to define this as a shape with an area that can be filled?

I mentioned closing the curve in case of an incomplete shape. If I select the converted shape and click Shape > Break then the fill will disappear because it is then just a selection of curves. As an example, I can even select a straight section and delete it. If I then select all the remaining curves (zoom out and drag a selection around the entire page) and click Shape > Connect I again get a single, closed curve which can take a fill.

I am trying to find a way to include an animated outline and shape. Basically i want the shape to stay where it is however i want an outline around the shape to be moving so the user knows to 'click to reveal' technically like a marker when it has a flash state on. I would like that same effect on a rectangle effectively.

The only way i can figure out to get this done is to create another layer labelled 'Visited', and remove all animations and greyscale it out and then create a trigger to say 'Show layer visited when user clicks' 152ee80cbc
