Errors related to librtlsdr.dll can arise for a few different different reasons. For instance, a faulty application, librtlsdr.dll has been deleted or misplaced, corrupted by malicious software present on your PC or a damaged Windows registry.

In the vast majority of cases, the solution is to properly reinstall librtlsdr.dll on your PC, to the Windows system folder. Alternatively, some programs, notably PC games, require that the DLL file is placed in the game/application installation folder.

When a RTL-SDR device is available, it must be connected via USB to the computer. Windows will then proceed to install the drivers. The drivers installed by the operating system itself are for the DVB-T function. New drivers must be installed which are supported by the libusb interface that the rtlsdr.dll uses to interface with the hardware. To do this, download a tool called Zadig, available at . Once downloaded you can select the RTL-SDR device and install the WinUSB drivers.

In order to get RTL-SDR to work with Labview, it was necessary to write a wrapper around the rtlsdr.dll, which was written by Steve Markgraf and Dimitri Stolnikov, who, fortunately for us, have made this library available under the GPL. This means we not only have access to the binary .dll release, but also to the documented header file, which gives us all the information we need to call the functions contained therein.

Since there seem to be some version conflicts and issues with previous Labview Versions, I've also uploaded the code saved for LV2015 as a zip file. Just open the lvlib in the folder and all the vi's are there. Please be aware that depending on where you unzip the files, you will have to alter the path to rtlsdr.dll in the call library function node. This is imporatant. Otherwise the vi's will not find the rtlsdr library and cause errors.

@Albert: really great work - I just came along and it worked almost instantly! For some reasons the links to the rtlsdr.dll were not adjusted automatically when installing the package. Is there a way to do that with the packet installer functionality?

If you did not use my rtlsdr.dll with it you have to pull the dongle and reinstall it to get the old data out of cache in the system. My rtlsdr.dll goes out and spends the relatively enormous amount of time to actually read the names from the dongle periodically. It caches data in the registry. So at the moment for about a half hour you get data from the cache. My rtlsdr.dll knows this cache is a problem with renames and fixes the name in the registry so that it reads correctly.

So if you used my rtlsdr.dll - I'm surprised. If you used the stock rtlsdr.dll then I'm not surprised.

matplotlib is also useful for plotting data. The librtlsdr binaries (rtlsdr.dll in Windows and librtlsdr.so in Linux)should be in the pyrtlsdr directory, or a system path. Note that these binaries may have additional dependencies.

I dont use windows often (actually only when I absolutely have to) but its nice to have the same or similiar software available for both.Software defined radios are neat rigs. The can be costly however if you have a TV dongle that uses the RTL2832U chipset then you are in luck. For $20 you can have a software defined radio. The one I purchased was from DX.com but any tuner will do. The TV tuners generally do not have the best receive versus the actual SDR dongles but you cant beat the price.

As of this writing you can purchase the one I did via -eztv665-dvb-t-usb-2-0-hdtv-tuner-receiver-set-1-x-cr2025-158821.

It does take a while to arrive but worth the wait. Use the following instructions below to install a full SDR setup in Windows. I used windows 7 however pretty much any version should work, howeer not sure about windows 8...thats a different beast all together

Get Required FilesYou will need 4 zip files, I have them on my domain but I have a link to the origional source in case there are more up to date versions. However I know these 4 work together as they are:
