I searched the FAQ for this. Maybe I'm just overlooking a setting. It seems super primitive that I can't wake up to whatever I want with Google Home, and instead am stuck with a rooster crowing - I mean, it is 2019, and our only alarm sound is the same sound people have been waking up to for thousands of years?

High sound pressure levels (>120dB) cause damage or death of the hair cells of the inner ear, hence causing hearing loss. Vocalization differences are present between hens and roosters. Crowing in roosters is reported to produce sound pressure levels of 100dB measured at a distance of 1m. In this study we measured the sound pressure levels that exist at the entrance of the outer ear canal. We hypothesize that roosters may benefit from a passive protective mechanism while hens do not require such a mechanism. Audio recordings at the level of the entrance of the outer ear canal of crowing roosters, made in this study, indeed show that a protective mechanism is needed as sound pressure levels can reach amplitudes of 142.3dB. Audio recordings made at varying distances from the crowing rooster show that at a distance of 0.5m sound pressure levels already drop to 102dB. Micro-CT scans of a rooster and chicken head show that in roosters the auditory canal closes when the beak is opened. In hens the diameter of the auditory canal only narrows but does not close completely. A morphological difference between the sexes in shape of a bursa-like slit which occurs in the outer ear canal causes the outer ear canal to close in roosters but not in hens.

Crowing males make a drumming sound with their wings. Following copulation, they sometimes make a low fluttering sound by rattling their tail feathers. Both sexes make sound by beating their wings together as they launch into flight.

The rooster is a bird with a lot to say. They have several different noises that they make and each has its own meaning. Having them in the garden with me and having SO many roosters, I now know a little Rooster Speak. Oh yes, when I hear a certain sound, I immediately scan the sky for a predator, or check the area for a threat. I know when a hen makes a certain sound to expect to hear her rooster crow soon after. With each sound a chicken or rooster makes you can expect an action or reaction. Chickens keep things lively in the garden, with their sounds and constant entertainment!

If you are a hen, you listen to the sounds of the rooster; the sounds are all meant for you. Because the mighty, mighty rooster is looking out for you at all times, you put up with his loud and noisy crow, his bossiness and his need to pull your feathers. After all the guy is not just a pretty face he will risk his life to save you, so you appreciate him for all the sweet and good things he does and forgive him for the rest.

may go on being woven, among all the roosters.

According to Merriam-Webster, the term rooster (i.e., a roosting bird) originated in the mid- or late 18th century as a euphemism to avoid the sexual connotation of the original English cock,[22][23][24] and is widely used throughout North America. Roosting is the action of perching aloft to sleep at night.[25]

Roosters can usually be differentiated from hens by their striking plumage of long, flowing tails and shiny, pointed feathers on their necks (hackles) and backs (saddle), which are typically of brighter, bolder colours than those of females of the same breed. However, in some breeds, such as the Sebright chicken, the rooster has only slightly pointed neck feathers, the same colour as the hen's. Identification can be made by looking at the comb, or eventually by the development of spurs on the male's legs (in a few breeds and in certain hybrids, the male and female chicks may be differentiated by colour).

Chickens are gregarious birds and live together in flocks. They have a communal approach to the incubation of eggs and raising of young. Individual chickens in a flock will dominate others, establishing a pecking order, with dominant individuals having priority for food access and nesting locations. Removing hens or roosters from a flock causes a temporary disruption to this social order until a new pecking order is established. Adding hens, especially younger birds, to an existing flock can lead to fighting and injury.[citation needed]

When a rooster finds food, he may call other chickens to eat first. He does this by clucking in a high pitch as well as picking up and dropping the food. This behaviour may also be observed in mother hens to call their chicks and encourage them to eat.

A rooster's crowing is a loud and sometimes shrill call and sends a territorial signal to other roosters.[36] However, roosters may also crow in response to sudden disturbances within their surroundings.

Roosters almost always start crowing before four months of age. Although it is possible for a hen to crow as well, crowing (together with hackles development) is one of the clearest signs of being a rooster.[citation needed]

Rooster crowing contests are a traditional sport in several countries, such as Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium,[38] the United States, Indonesia and Japan. The oldest contests are held with longcrowers. Depending on the breed, either the duration of the crowing or the times the rooster crows within a certain time is measured.

To initiate courting, some roosters may dance in a circle around or near a hen (a circle dance), often lowering the wing which is closest to the hen.[39] The dance triggers a response in the hen[39] and when she responds to his call, the rooster may mount the hen and proceed with the mating.

In a paper published in the journal Zoology, they outline how they placed a tiny microphone near the ears of sample roosters to measure how loud the crowing would sound and they performed micro-computerized tomography scans on the skulls of the birds.

Peter had assured the Lord Jesus of his loyalty even if all other disciples abandoned Him in the face of danger. So, Jesus told him that within the next twenty-four hours, before the rooster crowed, he would deny his Master no less than three times.

God often uses providence, like the crowing of a rooster, to point our consciences to unsettled accounts with Him. The sound of a baby crying in the next room can be a painful reminder to the conscience of a woman who aborted her baby that God still has a controversy with her. Two people talking in front of you on a queue may touch on a subject that reminds you of an apology or restitution that you still need to make. Surviving a terrible car accident or an armed robbery may be a reminder that you need to be reconciled with God.

Like the rooster welcoming the rising of the sun, often these providential alarm bells have little to do with your wrong deed, but your guilty conscience still smarts at their sound. You interpret them as God coming to knock on your door wanting to settle some unfinished business with you.

No single method will keep a rooster from crowing at night 100 percent of the time and he will crow periodically throughout the day. And some cranky neighbors may complain no matter how hard you try to minimize the disturbance. In that case, you have two options. The sad one is to get rid of the rooster.

So the next time a rooster rudely awakens you from a peaceful slumber, remember that his poor hens have no such built-in ear protection. Without those anatomical earplugs, they are forced to listen to those crows at full volume. And you might want to be thankful that you have the choice of blocking out his annoying screeching with a pair of foam inserts.

In cases like ours, it is due to the flock situation. A mature (and top of the pecking order) hen may take on the role of the rooster, protecting and leading, including making the customary sounds, albeit, not near as polished sounding like a male chicken. The sound a hen makes when she is crowing is not the same as an egg song, which can be loud, but sounds and looks nothing like crowing. I have owned chickens long enough to tell the difference between an egg song and a crow, including who out of my chickens is singing without even looking. My two different hens retained the ability to lay eggs, never got any kind of rooster plumage, and neither ever fertilized an egg, as far as we know.

Great minds think alike. I had a rooster named penguin that looked just like your penguin. (he was a mean little son of a gun) My sons hen Esmeralda crows from time to time. She is very dominant over his other 7 hens. He thinks she is a white cheeked black Spanish hen hence the name. 2351a5e196
