The world of Japanese animation and manga is bigger and better than ever across the world, and experienced anime fans will no doubt pick up on many trends, running gags and odd tropes when they consume this media, from strong nosebleeds from pervy characters to talking animals and much more. And then there's the classic game of rock paper scissors.

Western anime fans are used to rock paper scissors being a simple and fun game for kids, usually played to decide something quickly and fairly. However, this game is much older than anime fans might realize, and it can be traced all the way back to Japanese brothels and mainland China alike. Only later did this game find its way into anime.

The game now known as rock paper scissors/janken is over 2,000 years old, and it can be traced back to ancient China, although it didn't go by either of those names at the time. While the game has existed in various forms since its origins in China, the basic concept remained the same from then to the present. It involves two players who must throw one of three different moves, with each move defeating one and losing to another. This game later spread from China to other parts of the world such as India and Japan, where its name and the concept behind the hand gestures changed according to local cultures and interests. It later arrived in Japan, where the three gestures were changed to slug, frog and snake and was named mushi-ken.

In the 1600s, the Japanese developed the modern version of the original Chinese game and renamed the three gestures rock, paper and scissors; the version that continues to the present in real life and anime alike. The game was played almost exclusively in Asian regions for a few more centuries until it finally arrived in the West in the early 20th century, partly due to Japan's increased contact with foreign powers such as the United States and European nations. In particular, rock paper scissors arrived in the United States in the 1930s, where it gained popularity as a children's game and a way to make quick, impartial decisions. At the same time, in France, it was known as the "Japanese game." Later still, this game arrived in the world of anime and manga, where it thrives today.

Many scenes in anime and manga depict the game of janken, or rock paper scissors, often in slice-of-life anime where two characters need to make a quick decision and have no time or interest in arguing. They might play this game to decide who has to do a certain chore, for example, or who gets to go first in a game. However, some anime titles, especially shonen action stories, take it even more seriously.

A notable example is the long-running series Hunter x Hunter, where protagonist Gon Freecss has been known to play janken with his best friend and rival Killua Zoldyck -- a classic example of kids using this fun and fair game to make a decision. Most of all, Gon has learned to incorporate janken into his Nen fighting style, and he has won more than one fight by throwing either rock, paper or scissors at his opponent. True to the original game, Gon sometimes uses mind tricks and meta-knowledge to throw off his opponent and minimize the factor of random chance in these battles. True janken is played in the mind, not with the hands.

The captured criminal Wang Ahk recounts about how his life might differ if he hadn't lost his first rock-paper-scissors game against his little brother. Later, he was rescued by his gang, the notorious White Skulls bandits and he offed his three escorts after they lose a game of rock-paper-scissors to him. Later that night, he explained how he got captured and ended up slaying his lieutenant after being offended by his comments. Then asking about the whereabouts of "that guy", his subordinates revealed what they had found.

The next day, on their way to their destination, Wang Ahk and his subordinates encountered Gang Ryong who is delivering dumplings. Challenging Gang to a game of rock-paper-scissors, he and the White Skulls were shocked when Gang won and heads off. In ire, he told his men to catch Gang but they fail to do so; Wang promptly punished them with a game of rock-paper-scissors. Gang then delivered the dumplings to Lord Nam, as well as a gift of ginseng from Old Man Hwang as appreciation for the Lord's donations. When Gang left, Lord Nam revealed his true colors and talked down the villagers but ultimately decided to retreat to a quieter life.

Later, Wang Ahk replayed his game of rock-paper-scissors with Gang in his head while his men massacred the guards at Lord Nam's manor. Then confronting Lord Nam, he was revealed to be actually Hyeol Pyo, a former member of the White Skulls who had defected from them along with some of their gold. Then Wang Ahk challenged Hyeol Pyo to a game of rock-paper-scissors but crushed his skull after the latter refused and insulted him. Meanwhile, Gang Ryong played with some kids before heading back to the tavern only to find out about Lord Nam's (Hyeol Pyo) demise.

After Gang rushed to Lord Nam's manor to confirm his death, the former sought out the White Skull's base and confronted Wang Ahk inside. Jovially greeting Gang, Wang Ahk cuts to the chase and challenged Gang to a game of rock-paper-scissors. Gang agrees, adding that if he won they would have to turn themselves in to the magistrates and if he lost he would let Wang fight him. Wang accepts the conditions eagerly and as he counted down from rock to paper, Gang immediately plays scissors. Wang looked at Gang's insurmountable expression and realised what a monster Gang really is. He slowly played paper and thus voluntarily losing, much to his subordinates' shock. Gang then cheerfully left and the White Skulls gave chase whilst Wang, paralysed with fear, fruitlessly tried to warn them from going after him. In the end, Wang Ahk and the rest of the White Skulls went mad and turned themselves in to the authorities.

Rohan is challenged in a series of games of rock-paper-scissors by Ken Oyanagi, user of the new Stand Boy II Man. Rohan refuses but Ken harasses him into accepting a game. On the verge of losing, Rohan manages to use Shizuka to help him win. He then completely defeats Ken in their game of rock-paper-scissors fair and square.[1]

I somehow had to include Gon in this. Due to his main move being literally RPS. So I had to pick a fight that leaned the most toward the game of RPS. After thinking, I came up with his fight vs Knuckle. As Knuckles knew that Gon always used rock in his attack. So when Gon used paper it was a surprise to us all. Along with showing that Gon has more to his arsenal. ff782bc1db
