The premise of the game is that you take part in a series of illegal races on roads across the USA. This means it's a free for all once you hit the road. If you don't have a weapon, you can even grab one off the other racers if you are quick enough. Naturally, since the races are illegal, you will have to avoid or fight cops who will show up on your tail. Another feature of illegal races is that nobody cordons off the streets to block traffic for the racers, so you will have to avoid hitting pedestrians or run into cars along the way.

One nice touch I really like is that if you slam into a car hard enough, the impact will launch you from your bike several feets up the road, and you will have to wait while your on-screen persona gets up and runs back to where the bike was. Your goal is to win as many races as possible (duh). In the process, you will earn prize money that can be spent on buying new, more powerful bikes. The "Super Bike" is my favorite, since it comes with a 'nitro' booster that can boost your speed up to 10 times in each race. Another nice touch is that all the bikes handle differently, so it takes some time to learn how to handle a new bike properly.

Primary Surface - Text flickers during opening credits (see second attached screenshot). Menu text blinks once and disappears during navigation and setting changes. Game crashes immediately as soon as race begins loading.

Yes, you can. It's pretty simple, here's how to.

I assume you managed to have a working entry of the game in DxWnd configuration. With my settings, I see that the game window is difficult to drag and move on screen, so you need a second game entry with changed coordinates. For instance, I had the first 800x600 instance at the default position 50,50. To create a second entry I used the command right-click -> Duplicate, then updated the second entry setting the x position at 900 (that is 50 + 800 + 50). This way the two windows are supposed to stay one by side of the other and spaced of 50 pixels, Of course, you can make your own calculations and fit the space how you like best.

But this is not enough: DxWnd must be configured to be allowed to control multiple games (by default this is not true). So, be sure o be in expert mode, then go to Options -> Global settings and tick on the "Allow multiple hooks" flag.

That's it, here's the result. The two games will run in parallel but only the game with focus will receive the keyboard input, which means probably you won't have a good performance in both races.

There is some news, Coolsoft has released CoolSoft MIDI Mapper 2.0.4-beta1 which seems to have fixed the error. It isn't a definitive solution but now the game is working correctly.

This is what he wrote:

"Well, thanks for your investigation on the issue, really interesting.

I don't think that a missing function could be the culprit here, because if so I'll expect a game crash and not just an error message.

I instead suppose the game does not really need for a full implementation of midiOutSetVolume() function, but it only needs that its calls to modMessage() to return MMSYSERR_NOERROR instead of the current MMSYSERR_NOTSUPPORTED.

That said, I've built a test version with this change: the modMessage() function of MIDIMapper now always returns MMSYSERR_NOERROR (even if it does nothing at all with the given data).

Please let me know if it works.

If so, we could start from there to implement some kind of volume management, that should be done on VirtualMIDISynth rather than on MIDIMapper side.

NOTE: I only expect the game to not emit the error anymore; the volume set/get still does not work, so if the game has some kind of volume controllers, they won't do anything.

As for the "music playing when getting back to game menus" well, I hope they (game creators) do stop MIDI from playing and not only lower its volume to zero..."

Another thing to worry about is the cops. Yes, the game comes with police officers who will make you stop participating in a race. If you happen to crash your bike near their station, they will apprehend you and make you pay a fine to bail yourself out. Failure to pay the fine will end your game and make you lose your progress.

I somehow managed to install road rash on my windows 11 PC. The game runs very smooth, no problem at all, until I start a race. The game is running, but the display is just weird. i en don't know how to explain it so I'll add an image here.

Tried dosbox and it didn't work. I'll have to try VM with windows 98. What VM do you suggest? I have used Oracle VM Virtual Box in the past to run linux but it was just to play a game. Other than that I don't have much experience with VM's.

Road Rash puts the player in control of a motorcycle racer who must finish in third place or higher among fourteen other racers; the player advances throughout the game's five levels by winning five races on each level.[1][2][3] The game's races take place in a number of Californian settings, including San Francisco, the Sierra Nevada, Napa Valley, and the Pacific Coast Highway.[4] During a race, the racer can brake, accelerate, and attack neighboring opponents. The racer will punch at the nearest opponent with a default input, while holding a directional button during the input will result in either a backhand or a kick. Some opponents wield weapons such as clubs and chains, which can be taken and used by the racer if the opponent is attacked as they are holding the weapon out to strike.[5][6] The racer can be ejected from their bike if they crash into an obstacle (such as cows, deer, cars and trees) or if they run out of stamina (shown in the bottom-left corner of the screen) due to fights with opponents. In this event, the racer will automatically run back toward their bike, though the player can alter their course and avoid incoming traffic with the directional buttons, or stand still by holding the brake input button. Opponents will likewise be ejected from their bike if their own stamina is depleted; the stamina of the nearest opponent is visible within the bottom-right corner of the screen.[7][8][9] In the Sega CD version, the color of the opponent's stamina meter indicates their level of aggressiveness toward the racer.[10]

The bike has its own "damage meter" between the racer's and opponents' stamina meters, which decreases every time the racer suffers a crash. The bike will be wrecked if the meter fully depletes, which ends the player's participation in the current race and deducts the cost of a repair bill from the racer's balance.[7][9] Motor officers make sporadic appearances throughout the game's tracks, and can also end the player's participation if they apprehend the racer following a crash, which deducts the cost of a fine from their balance.[9] Repair bills and fines become more expensive with each subsequent level.[1] If the racer lacks the funds to cover either a repair bill or a fine, the game will end prematurely.[9][13]

Road Rash is primarily single-player, but allows for two players to play intermittently against each other.[11][14] The game features two distinct modes of single-player gameplay: the central campaign "Big Game Mode" and a stripped-down "Thrash Mode", in which the player can race on any given track at any difficulty.[11][15] In the Big Game Mode, the player takes on the identity of one of a selection of characters with differing statistics. Smaller characters accelerate more quickly, while larger characters have stronger attacks.[3] Each of the characters start with a differing amount of money, and some characters come equipped with a weapon.[11] Between races, the player can converse with other bikers and receive gameplay tips.[4][11] The Windows version features an online multiplayer mode for up to eight human players connected via a modem or local network.[16]

The 3DO version of Road Rash was met with critical acclaim, and is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the series.[17] The most common points of praise among critics were the advanced texture-mapped graphics (which Rik Skews of Computer and Video Games described as a more polished Crash 'n Burn) and the grunge soundtrack (which a reviewer for Next Generation said lent an "in-your-face" attitude to the game).[b] Additionally, Bacon of GamePro commended the branching routes and humorous full motion video sequences, although he criticized the lack of a multiplayer option.[43] Iceman of Electronic Gaming Monthly and the Next Generation reviewer both felt that the gameplay eventually became repetitive.[41][44] While Skews and co-reviewer Deniz Ahmet acknowledged the responsiveness of the controls,[40] Chris Gore of VideoGames pointed out the inability to configure them as a major flaw.[45]

Rough music, leather clothing, plenty of booze and sexy girls - these are the main characteristics of bikers, or at least how most people portray them. The game Road Rash is about motorcycles and playing this game you will... wait for it... confirm all these myths/ideas! In the game you will meet a bunch of people, who have quite a lot of money so they can afford to buy expensive and fast bikes, and their life are not very valuable for them. You will race in with fast bikes and believe me, this game is everything, but not a fair-play, the races are harsh. Each time your opponent will try to overtake you, you can attack him (kick him, punch him,...) and tries to crash his bike. In real life, a fall at a speed of about 200km/hour would be fatal, but in the game is just a small crash, after a short moment you get up get back on the track. Road Rash contains 5 different tracks and offers 3 game modes: Trash mode (sit on the bike and at play), Big Game Mode (Championship, where you start as a beginner and you have to move to the top) and Mano-a-Mano Game Mode (multiplayer game over a network). Road Rash is not a traditional racing game, where bikers are fair, but the game has a great atmosphere, gameplay and catchy music. e24fc04721
