When Apple launches iOS 15 later this year, playing soothing rain, stream, and ocean sounds on an iPhone will no longer require a separate app. The announcement of the latest operating system was so packed with new features that not much time was given to this hidden gem, but it could prove to be an unexpected favorite for many iPhone owners and whether used at work to escape encroaching noises or at home to relax and drift off at night.

Apple announced iOS 15 at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June of 2021, showcasing the new design for its Safari browser with tab groups, greatly expanded FaceTime capabilities that include sharing videos and songs with a group, faster Siri interactions, and a system-wide Quick Note feature that makes it easy to keep relevant information associated with web pages, photos and more. iOS 14 was a big update but iOS 15 might have even more changes and improvements. Updates to macOS, iPadOS, and watchOS came at the same event, so Apple didn't have time to explain every feature in complete detail.

A somewhat hidden iOS 15 feature allows an iPhone to play soothing, ambient sounds in the background, including three high-quality nature sounds and three variations of white noise. Anyone eager to try this out can download the prerelease version of the iPhone's next operating system from Apple's beta website, however, some might want to wait for the official release which is expected to arrive in September, since beta releases can lead to unexpected problems that interfere with normal operation. For anyone that installs iOS 15, the controls might be difficult to find as they are somewhat buried within the Accessibility settings.

When running iOS 15, an iPhone has a background sound option tucked away in the Settings app under the Accessibility tab. Scrolling down to the 'Hearing' section and then tapping 'Audio & Visual' followed by 'Background Sounds' will reveal the controls. The sound choices include ocean, rain, and stream sounds and these are high-quality audio samples. There are also three white noise options, bright, dark, and balanced, for anyone seeking a neutral background that might help mask annoying real-world sounds. The general volume can be set here, as well as the mix of foreground and background sound to use when other media is playing, such as music or a video. The combined sound feature can also be disabled, which will switch to a mode that temporarily pauses background sound while media plays.

iPhone owners might be surprised just how useful this capability is. A high-quality white noise generator is great for getting into the zone, masking environmental sounds when noise-canceling isn't possible. The watery burble of nature is recognized to be very beneficial for anyone having trouble sleeping. With Apple's new background sounds feature in iOS 15, iPhone users will be able to mask environmental noise at work and throughout the day while relaxing in the evening with peaceful rain or ocean ambiance.

In addition to fitness and nutrition resources, BODi features wellness offerings that include on-demand sound meditations with musician and sound meditation facilitator Scarlett de la Torre. Specific sound meditations focus on sleep, anxiety and stress relief, focus and productivity, and self-care.

Formerly known as Relax Melodies, the BetterSleep app features an impressive variety of sleep sounds and audio, including bedtime stories, meditation music, nature sounds, and content that features binaural beats, ASMR, isochronic brainwaves, and solfeggio frequencies. The app also has options for breathing exercises, physical stretching, and winding down.

Calm Radio, not associated with Calm, is a Canadian app dedicated to providing music and sounds that will calm and relax you. It features relaxing music from all genres, wellness and sleep music, sleep stories, podcasts, audiobooks, nature sounds, white noise, and guided binaural meditations. There are both paid and free versions of the app.

Updated April 28, 2024 by Quinton O'Connor: There's never a bad time to grab your phone and unwind. Which is almost a bit ironic, seeing as our phones can be accidental gateways to so much stress via negative news, poppy social media, and such! Chill out with these great games to take the edge off a hectic day.

My Oasis is the perfect anxiety relief game. The main point of the app is to cultivate a beautiful island, your own relaxing virtual oasis, through tapping, all designed to reduce your stress. It is very simple to play and easy to pick up when you need a break from your daily routine.

If creating relaxing spaces is your favorite thing, but you want a winter aesthetic, look no further than Penguin Isle. Cats and Soup is exactly what it sounds like; cats making soup. In this cute mobile game, you can place cats to focus on various soup-making tasks. If it gets too stressful for your cats, they will even take a break and do things like jump on a trampoline.

This mobile game is incredibly relaxing, with no intense situations. You can truly just sit back and watch your cats work. Over time, you can unlock new recipes and cooking stations for your cats to work at. Oh yeah, you can also put adorable hats on them.

City management games can quickly become overwhelming. Oftentimes, there is a lot to focus on; resource management, building space, design, and costs. Townscaper takes this a step back. In this game, you can build to your heart's content without worrying about issues like this.

Rather than budgeting time and resources, Townscaper is a sandbox experience that lets you do whatever you want. There are no goals or objectives, so you can sit back, relax, and make a cute little town.

Well, if you're looking for something that's charming as heck to the point of downright relaxing, but you have especially JRPG-ish tastes, the mobile version of Chrono Trigger is practically your calling card.

A fun adventure across time awaits, with great characters, an engaging battle system, and timeless character designs by the late, great, Akira Toriyama. Yasunori Mitsuda's soundtrack is a winner, too.

Fans of Picross rejoice! Konami Pixel Puzzle Collection is essentially a Konami version of Picross. In this puzzle game, you will have a blank grid with numbers lining the outer edge. Your goal is to fill in the squares according to the numbers. In the end, a picture will form!

As a Konami game, you can expect to see some familiar faces, such as characters from Frogger and Castlevania. Whether you are a Konami fan or not, Picross is a relaxing puzzle that requires a bit of brainpower.

Stardew Valley continues to be a powerhouse in the cozy gaming world years after it launched back in 2016. This farming simulator is available on several platforms, complete with its own mobile version.

Within the valley, you will get to tend to crops, raise animals, meet your future partner, and even slay dangerous monsters. There is something for everyone in this game, leaving you entertained for hours.

Lastly, we have Cozy Grove. This is an island-planning game with a twist. On the island, you will find a handful of bears, each with a task. For example, the first bear you meet is Charlotte Pine; she is a ranger that can identify items for you, as well as provide hints for quests.

Cozy Grove has a gorgeous art style and amazing music to play in the background as you make your way around your island, harvesting goodies and placing decorations. As the name suggests, this is a cozy game that will leave you feeling warm inside.

"I have never encountered a more beautiful or powerful combination of photography, music and guided imagery. It was more than calming and relaxing; it was uplifting and transformed my mental state from fear and fatigue

 to joy and hope."

Brief Summary

This feature will allow more than one YouTube video playing simultaneously on iOS/iPadOS. This is very useful when you're listening to focus/relaxing music while also watching tutorials, for example.

Details

At the moment, when I try this on mobile, it pauses the other video when I play the current one. Again, it would be amazing if we can play at least 2 YouTube videos at the same time for the scenario I described above. The desktop app already does this. Please apply the same on mobile. Thank you!

On my own device, I know that I cannot, say, start a video, switch it to PiP and then play music at the same time. The system will automatically pause whichever source came before the playing one regardless of how you do it.

Back in the 1980s, if an original Mac went wrong, it would play the sound of a crash, and display Susan Kare's bomb icon. It was a piece of whimsy that you really, really, really did not appreciate when you'd just lost your work.

Decades on, Apple could be about to make a similarly enraging move, though this time with good intentions. Apple wants to add a new health feature, where a device such as an iPad can tell when you're having a bad day.

A newly-revealed patent application, called just "Stress Detection," is chiefly concerned with how such stress could be determined. But it does make at least some references to what the devices could then do in response. 152ee80cbc
