After lunch it was time for the princesses to get their pictures taken against the castle backdrop. We had the backdrop set-up in a separate room so the girls were all surprised when they saw it. First we took individual pictures of each princess and then a group photo of all the girls together. They were all laughing and giggling and have a great time! Roma loves everything about dress-up, especially princess dresses and accessories. When I was thinking about her birthday party theme, I knew we had to have some level of dress-up and some level of princess. So, the party included a full dress-up station! We also had a balloon twister, a face painter, and Disney princess performances. And plenty of food, treats, and drinks for the adults who wanted to kick back *a little extra* while their kids played!

We brought up our kids art table and set it up with these Melissa & Doug dress up characters for kids to hang out and play with while they waited to get their faces painted, balloon animals made, or while they ate. The kids loved this area and ended up hanging out there and playing with some of our house toys, too. In this area, we also had this princess tent for kids to play in, which was also very loved.

Unfortunately, since it was drizzling a bit in the beginning of the party (from 11-12ish), we had to move the balloon twister and face painter inside, which made it a little packed and sweaty inside at first, but our guests were so understanding and since the kids were having a blast and no one minds a little drizzle, everyone still had a great time. After the skies cleared, we moved the balloon twister and face painter outside so people could have a bit of breathing room (my original vision was to have it outside so that people could dress up while they waited for their balloon animal or face painting turn.)

Party Princess Entertainers: These are individuals who work full-time or part-time providing entertainment services performing live at children's birthday parties or other events, typically portraying well-known characters such as Disney princesses. Some do it as a hobby, many others do it as their job. These performers are usually highly trained, specialized actors who own or work for legitimate businesses. Most companies pride themselves on being as accurate and high-quality as possible, both in their performances and in their costuming, in order to provide the most authentic character interaction experiences they can. Many companies spend thousands on costuming to achieve this. As an aside, if you're curious why you often see companies nicknaming their characters things like "The Sleeping Princess" for Sleeping Beauty or "The Glass Slipper Princess" for Cinderella, it has to do with protecting them from being targeted for copyright infringement. There are no party companies that are officially sanctioned by Disney, and while generally the Disney legal department leaves them alone, occasionally they will send a cease and desist if a company is too obviously using Disney names or images for their characters. (This usually only happens to lower quality companies because Disney likes to maintain their image, but occasionally high quality companies that get too much attention can also be targeted)

Shortly after, the real chaos began. One by one, princess performers and cosplayers began reporting that their wigs, which had been ordered during a sale in early November, were being cancelled by FTW. Performers started receiving emails such as these, with FTW claiming that the people whose orders were being cancelled "posed a threat to their reputation". Note that at this point, the only people whose orders were cancelled were other members of the Facebook group where Tara and Sophie had posted. Here is another example of these cancellation emails.

This also hurts business for the party performers who had booked events months ahead of time with the expectation that they would have these wigs in their hands for them. The issue hurts other businesses, and, by extension, hurts the children who will not be able to have the character attend since the performer no longer has a wig to perform in. Also to the question of "why would you book an event when you don't have a wig yet"-- FTW had a relatively consistent timeline between order date and date of receipt of the wig. Most companies have a good sense of what that timeline would be and could book events ahead of time with relative certainty that the wig would arrive with enough time to spare.

Tara, however, did not, as Paypal chose to side with Donehoo. The princess community has enacted a boycott of FTW for the foreseeable future. It lasted a few months. Tara tried to rereport the case to Paypal and was unable to. She also tried calling Etsy with no luck. She contacted the attorney general in both her state and the state where FTW is located but unfortunately I was unable to learn the outcome of that. She did wind up selling the wig in March 2017 for half price to another performer.

In July 2018, it came to light that Donehoo was still banning customers and cancelling orders for seemingly nonsensical reasons. Jennifer, a party performer who'd made a purchase, received this email along with a cancellation of her order.

As a result of the 2017 debacle, a significant number of new wig stylists and accessory makers catering to the party entertainment community cropped up. Many of them are still around today, and produce quality work at reasonable prices. Prior to this, FTW had effectively cornered the market on accessible, high quality character wigs for those looking to portray Disney Princesses, and their pricing reflected that. Now, pricing on character wigs has become much more competitive with the increased number of sellers looking to fill the gap for those who couldn't or wouldn't buy from FTW, due to bans, affordability issues, or moral objection to their behavior. While there are some outliers who still charge higher than average rates for their styled wigs, there is definitely more transparency to the pricing of wigs than there was before. For the first year after, buyers were also routinely warned against buying from FTW due to what had happened, though now many people new to the industry and hobby are unaware and not quite as much attention is drawn to it. 17dc91bb1f
