Following the tragic death of pop music legend Prince, a portrait has emerged of a humanitarian artist, who sought to find ways to uplift people who were struggling. And, while his fame was certainly not a result of sharp sociopolitical insights, he composed a number of songs that could be regarded as protest songs.

Growing up as an orphan in a remote village in the Egyptian desert, Ash's life is pretty ordinary--sort of. He spends most of his time working in irrigation canals and avoiding bullies, but he is also being secretly trained by his mentor Yazen "for some great purpose." Yazen has never said what that is, until now: the night before Ash's twelfth birthday. According to Yazen, Ash was born on the same day as Prince Khufu, which makes him eligible to compete to be the prince's shadow, a lifelong confidante and bodyguard. Ash doesn't really believe Yazen, but when a floating royal barge, driven by solar-powered sails, arrives to take Ash and his mentor to the bustling, magical, and solar-powered capital, things get real.

What awaits Ash is deadly--five days of dangerous tests, each overseen by a different Egyptian god. Unfortunately, they've been told, not all will survive. On top of the tests, Ash is up against Set, the devious god of chaos, secretly working toward the candidates' demise. If they fail, a different prince will inherit the throne, one Set can manipulate for his evil schemes. Ash finds two friends willing to fight by his side, but he's been warned. Some candidates lie, cheat, and even try to harm others to win. Can Ash and his friends do what it takes to save the kingdom? And will there be anyone left to become the Shadow Prince?

Prince's acclaimed performance included a guitar solo during the "Purple Rain" segment of his medley in which his shadow was projected onto a large, flowing beige sheet. As the 48-year-old rock star let rip, the silhouette cast by his figure and his guitar (shaped like the singer's symbol) had phallic connotations for some.

By enlarging his shadow, it's possible Prince intended to accentuate this aspect of his solo, but it's just as likely it was accidental. (You can find videos of the halftime show at YouTube.com.) A message left with Prince's publicist Tuesday wasn't returned.

The Minnesota native has attracted controversy before. Tipper Gore launched a campaign to place a warning sticker on his 1984 album "Purple Rain" because of the lyrics to the song "Darling Nikki." Though his musical style has been expansive, he's best known for funky, sexually charged songs like "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Get Off."

The Adventures of Prince Achmed (known as Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed in German) is a 1926 German animated fairytale film by Lotte Reiniger. It is the oldest surviving animated feature film; two earlier ones were made in Argentina by Quirino Cristiani, but they are considered lost.[2] The Adventures of Prince Achmed features a silhouette animation technique Reiniger had invented which involved manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera.[3] The technique she used for the camera is similar to Wayang shadow puppets, though hers were animated frame by frame, not manipulated in live action. The original prints featured color tinting.

An African sorcerer conjures up a flying horse, which he shows to the Caliph. When the sorcerer refuses to sell it for any amount of gold, the Caliph offers any treasure he has. The sorcerer chooses Dinarsade, the Caliph's daughter, to her great distress. Prince Achmed, Dinarsade's brother, objects, but the sorcerer persuades him to try out the horse. It carries the prince away, higher and higher into the sky, as he does not know how to control it. The Caliph has the sorcerer imprisoned.

The sorcerer frees himself from his chains. Transforming himself into a bat, he seeks out Achmed. The prince chases the sorcerer (who has turned into a kangaroo) and falls into a pit. While Achmed fights a giant snake, the sorcerer takes Pari Banu to China and sells her to the Emperor. The sorcerer returns and pins Achmed under a boulder on top of a mountain. However, the Witch of the Flaming Mountain notices him and rescues Achmed. The sorcerer is her arch-enemy, so she helps Achmed rescue Pari Banu from the Emperor. Then, the demons of Wak Wak find the couple and, despite Achmed's fierce resistance, carry Pari Banu off. Achmed forces a captive demon to fly him to Wak Wak. However, the gates of Wak Wak are locked.

Deadwood pulled back his red-spattered fist and looked to the balcony. Finnegrin leaned over the railing, still half-shadowed, but Rayla saw him give the slightest nod of his head. Deadwood lowered his fist.

The roar of the crowd swept through the pit like a wave, catching Rayla by surprise. She spun, her nerves sparked. Through the mass of onlookers, she caught sight of Redfeather, her back against the wall and her arms folded. The other Moonshadow elf met her eyes and gave a single nod of approval.

The song "Shadow Dreams" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince talks about the concept of shadow dreams, which are dreams that are lurking in the shadows and are sometimes forgotten or disregarded. The lyrics suggest that even though these dreams are elusive and difficult to attain, it is important to pursue them relentlessly in order to achieve a sense of fulfillment and purpose in life.

The song encourages listeners to keep pushing and striving towards their dreams, even when faced with setbacks and obstacles, and to never give up hope. The lyrics emphasize the importance of hard work and perseverance, as well as the belief that anyone can achieve their shadow dreams if they are willing to put in the effort.

In addition, the song touches on the idea of self-validation and identity, as illustrated by the line "Your shadow is the true validation of the fact that you exist." The lyrics suggest that one's shadow is a fundamental part of their identity, and that losing sight of one's shadow dreams can lead to a loss of purpose and direction in life.

Overall, "Shadow Dreams" is a motivational song that encourages listeners to pursue their dreams and never give up in the face of adversity. The lyrics suggest that even though achieving one's shadow dreams may be difficult, it is a worthwhile pursuit that can ultimately lead to personal fulfillment and happiness.

During a peace negotiation hosted by Tarlan, the nomad prince, it is revealed that he and his northerners have no enmity against the king, and that his ulterior motive is to stop the Immortals, who are trying to usurp the throne. To do this he is trying to find the true queen and bring her to the throne, and the General agrees to help. The northerners believe that the queen is being hidden in a crypt which is not too far away from the Legion fortress. However the Nomads believe that she is stranded on a Shadow Island. The General choses where he would like to go first, and Sven sends Ironclad along with the General to protect him, as the prophet Reinhard had predicted that the General will find the true queen.

Harking back to some of her earliest works (namely The Forgotten Beasts of Eld), McKillip offers up a ghostly tale of human emotions gone astray in a city that lives and dies in endless cycles. Greed, despair, grief and avarice have all taken their toll on the once-beautiful city of Ombria, but it is the death of its prince that pushes it over the edge into darkness and shadow. Several key players participate in this particular procession of dying and rebirth: Kyel Greve, the new prince-to-be who is too young to rule but old enough to feel the despair of those around him; Lydea, the dying prince's lover who feels the weight of the city resting on her shoulders; Ducon Greve, the bastard prince who sees and feels the change happening but is in no position to alter the coming darkness; Domina Pearl, the sorceress who is pushing the city even further on its path of destruction; and Mag and Faey, two mysterious women who hold some of the past, present and future of Ombria inside them. In tone more gothic horror than straight fantasy, this somber novel lacks a clear protagonist, each character being more intent on finding his or her own path than fighting any clear battle. But the fine prose is nothing less than what one would expect from a World Fantasy Award winner, while the detailed portraits of the dying city coupled with the gloomy attitude of its citizenry are quite chilling.
