Tim Goodman gave up his dream of being a Pokmon trainer following the death of his mother and his estrangement from his father Harry, a police detective who moved to Ryme City, where humans and Pokmon live together in harmony and Pokmon battles are illegal. Tim is informed by Harry's friend, Lieutenant Hideo Yoshida, that Harry was killed in a car accident. Tim goes to Harry's apartment to sort things out and meets Harry's police partner, a deerstalker-clad amnesiac Pikachu, whom only Tim can understand. Tim accidentally releases a mysterious purple gas known as "R" from a vial he finds in Harry's office; they are then attacked by a party of Aipom[d] who became rabid under the gas's influence.

Mewtwo explains that Harry had tried to save him from Howard and helped Mewtwo escape, but was attacked by the Greninja. Mewtwo then decided to heal Harry's wounded body, which was when Pikachu volunteered to have his consciousness fused with Harry's in order to continue their investigation, and as a result, the experience erased both Harry's and Pikachu's memories. Mewtwo separates the two, and Tim reunites with his father in his human body. Tim then decides to stay in Ryme City to become a detective and spend more time with his father, Pikachu, and Pokmon.

On March 15, 2019, it was revealed that Legendary will release a graphic novel based on the film.[59]Niantic Labs promoted the film through the Pokmon Go app, by featuring, among other things, select Pokmon from the movie appear in the game, including a limited edition "detective" version of Pikachu.[60] The Pokmon Company released a series of trading cards featuring images from the film, including a limited edition Detective Pikachu card only available the first weekend of the film's release. Along with TCG booster pack sets, they produced a limited edition Detective Pikachu Cafe Figure Collection bundle.[61][62] A set of 6 Detective Pikachu toys were also sold at Burger King.[63] Wicked Cool Toys, the current toy partner for the franchise, released figures and plush toys for retail as well.[64]

Our main character, Tim Goodman, is a 21-year-old who used to want to be a trainer but now works in insurance. He grew up with his grandma after his mother died and his father sank himself into detective work; he's bitter and lonely and still kind of resents his dad for not being there for him, though he bottles it up. When he receives news that his father and his Pokmon partner died in an accident, he heads towards his father's home of Ryme City with a lot of conflicted feelings, and only becomes even more conflicted when at his father's apartment he discovers his dad had been hoping to invite Tim to live with him, even preparing him a room to look like his childhood bedroom. Then he unexpectedly meets his father's Pikachu, who survived the accident with a bad case of amnesia and covers up issues with pushing people away and failing those he cares about with a lot of energetic talking. They're joined by Lucy, a mistreated newsroom intern stuck writing listicles while she insistently tries to take herself seriously as a real reporter (with hilariously awkward results), as well as her partner Psyduck, in trying to uncover Pikachu's lost memories and exactly what happened to Tim's dad.

I played the Detective Pikachu game a year before the movie came out, so that's the perspective from which I came at the movie: in particular, I went into it already knowing that Pikachu was actually Harry. The game, for some reason, stopped just short of actually revealing this, but hinted at it pretty bluntly and early: Harry's coworkers from the detective agency remark on how Harry's Pikachu never used to like coffee or sweets before the accident, but Harry himself did. From there, one could notice that the opening cutscene where we see Pikachu pre-accident showed Pikachu looking and behaving like a normal Pikachu, and piece together that the only way Harry could have ended up in Pikachu's body was if Mewtwo did it somehow - but the game never explained this or established how it might be possible. Overall, one came away from the game with a sort of confused feeling that this had to be what they were getting at one way or another, but still feeling more like a person with a very plausible but speculative fan theory.

Parents need to know that Pokmon Detective Pikachu is a mystery adventure set in a fictional city in which humans and Pokmon co-exist. Starring Ryan Reynolds as the voice of a Pikachu who can speak to only one human, Tim (Justice Smith), the story explores how the two team up to investigate the supposedly accidental death of Tim's detective father. There's definitely some violence: Pokmon battle both each other and humans, and there's destruction (including a fatal car crash) and injuries, but nothing gets bloody or graphic. Main characters are frequently in peril, but -- despite some close calls -- no one dies. Language is limited to "hell," "stupid," and "good God," and there's nothing more risque than flirting and a couple of double-meaning jokes (when Pikachu sees a shirtless man, he quips that all he can see is "tattoos and nipples"). The story promotes teamwork, courage, and friendship and shows how even the seemingly inexperienced can make a difference. POKMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU starts with a powerful Pokmon setting fire to a lab and then causing a fatal car accident in Ryme City, a place where the creatures and humans live side by side without battles or trainers. In another city, 21-year-old Tim (Justice Smith) finds out that his estranged father, Harry, a renowned police detective, was killed in the accident, so he travels to Ryme City to collect his father's effects. While staying in his father's apartment, Tim discovers that his father's Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) partner -- previously believed dead -- is alive, but without any memories. Even more worrisome? Tim can understand when the Pikachu speaks, while everyone else still hears the typical (and adorable) "Pika Pika." The duo also discovers that a vial of gas found in Harry's place can temporarily turn Pokmon into unhinged rage monsters. Together with help from Lucy (Kathryn Newton), a budding reporter who wants to look into the poisonous gas and what happened the night of the accident, Tim and Pikachu track down Harry's sources around Ryme City, hoping to find answers, wherever they might lead.

Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) is a loner. He grew up on Pokemon, but has lost interest. The loss of his mother along with the gap created when his father went to work as a detective at the Ryme City Police Department have left him untethered. When his father is killed in a car crash, Tim is summoned to Ryme City, where he reluctantly begins investigating his father's death. He is aided by his father's former partner, Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds). With the aid of an intern (Kathryn Newton) from the news media, Tim unravels a plot to merge humans and their pokemon counterparts. Tim finds redemption in his effort to save Ryme City, coming to terms with his own unhappy childhood.

When ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, his son Tim (Justice Smith) embarks on a journey to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds), a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world— they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Tim and Pikachu go to Hi-Hat Caf, where Pikachu explains that he has amnesia but can remember two things: he was Harry's partner as a detective, and they were investigating a case involving the "R" substance. Tim reluctantly agrees to help Pikachu solve the case, as Pikachu believes Harry is alive and finding the truth will help them locate him. They go to the CNM facility to gather information on the case from Lucy. There, they find her working on the set of a commercial for the upcoming Pokmon parade involving both Howard Clifford and his son Roger. Howard leaves after an argument with his son, and Roger dismisses Lucy's efforts to call attention to the R story. Tim and Pikachu meet with Lucy and learn that Harry had a source at Ryme Wharf he was getting information from. Traveling there, they encounter a Mr. Mime that they quickly realize was Harry's source. Mr. Mime is initially uncooperative with them, but when Tim plays along with its miming and pretends to pour gasoline over it, it agrees to help. It reveals that R was being distributed at a place called the "Roundhouse," which Tim and Pikachu find is an underground facility where illegal Pokmon battles are held. Sebastian, the Roundhouse's operator, recognizes Pikachu and angrily confronts the pair, telling them that Pikachu once damaged his coat and scarred his prized Charizard in battle. He refuses to give up any information unless Pikachu and Charizard have a rematch. However, before the battle starts, Sebastian gives Charizard a dose of R, causing it to go on a rampage. Making matters worse, Pikachu finds himself unable to remember any of his moves. Tim interferes in the battle to protect Pikachu, and when Sebastian enters the ring, he is knocked down by Charizard and breaks the vials of R inside his coat. The gas spreads over the entire room, causing all the Pokmon present to fly into a frenzy. In the midst of the chaos, Tim demands answers and Sebastian tells him that R was being given out by someone he knows only as "the doctor." Soon afterward, a newly-evolved Gyarados defeats Charizard with Hydro Pump, flooding Tim and Pikachu out of the building in the process. They are arrested by Ryme City police and brought to Yoshida, who shows them footage of Harry's accident to convince them of his death. 2351a5e196
