In July, we first contacted Pocket Protesters about Nadezhda, Maria and Ekaterina of feminist punk band Pussy Riot, who were being held for performing an anti_Putin protest gig in a church. It was to become our biggest SMS action so far. We gathered over 10,000 names by text for our petition calling for their release and handed it in during a stunt at the Russian embassy the day before their court hearing on 17 August.

At their appeal hearing on 10 October, Ekaterina was released conditionally, however, jail sentences were upheld for Nadezhda and Maria and the two women have now been shipped to separate penal colonies. Pussy Riot are now a long-term case for us and we continue to call for their release and for all charges to be dropped. See our latest action

The committee then split into six groups to evaluate suggestions by category and make recommendations for moving forward. In the process, the group discovered that several of the suggested actions or changes were already in place, such as those related to thermostat settings in summer and winter months. The suggestions and comments also emphasized the importance of ongoing communications with respect to the suggestions, as well as progress on implementation.

One in three women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at the hands of their intimate partners. Seven percent of women have been sexually assaulted by non-partners. These statistics, released in 2013 by the World Health Organization are staggering and underscore the horrifying fact that no woman, regardless of whom she is as a person and the conditions of her life, is immune to violence. Violence against women and girls is a worldwide problem that crosses cultures, religions, socioeconomic groupings and geographies. While policy attention to the silent epidemic of violence against women and girls is growing across the world, not enough is being done to eliminate its existence altogether.

While advocacy on violence against women and girls must be grounded in a human rights framework, the argument for aggressive investment by governments in addressing violence against women and girls becomes that much more robust when its broader implications on public health, social development and economic growth are better understood.

At ICRW we work to understand the many inter-related dimensions of the issue of violence against women and girls. We delve into its origins and manifestations, its social and economic costs, and assess promising strategies to prevent and mitigate its occurrence. Through our applied research, we are building the evidence base on what works to prevent and respond to violence, including comprehensive approaches such as economically empowering women, engaging boys and men, health and social support to survivors of violence and holding perpetrators accountable. Evidence on economic and social costs is important for understanding the far-reaching consequences of violence at all levels. We must use this evidence to drive investments and community based action focused in prevention and response to violence.

The holiday season is now upon us. This is a time of celebration and reflection. It is the perfect time to make a personal resolution to take action in ending violence against women and girls. There are many ways for you to be involved. You can invest in research identifying solutions that help women and girls lead safe, healthy and productive lives. Support programs teaching our children about the social construction of gender, and help eliminate harmful norms that promote or condone violence.

ICRW is leading the charge in reducing inequality and poverty by generating actionable, evidence-based research. Your support can help fund this important work and make a real difference in the lives of women, girls, and gender and sexual minorities around the world.

"The novel started when I got dumped," Weiner recalls. "I had gone out with a guy for a very long period of time, and I was so sure we would spend our lives together. Obviously he had other plans. I had been the one who said we needed to take a break, but then -- moving with a speed I had never glimpsed in our years together -- he got another girlfriend. I was moping around, sounding like a bad Britney Spears song. I wanted to write a novel in the voice of a girl who had been dumped like that."

In the novel, Weiner created an alter ego, Candace Shapiro -- a Philadelphia Examiner reporter who goes by "Cannie" so that people won't be tempted to make fun of her weight by calling her "Candy." The action begins as her ex-boyfriend, Bruce Guberman, philosophizes about Cannie's physique in a magazine sex column titled "Loving a Larger Woman." The idea for this episode came from an incident in which a casual boyfriend of Weiner's began writing a sex column that sometimes covered their experiences together.

Other elements of Weiner's life served as grist for the novel -- especially her time at Princeton. At one point, Cannie considers opening a muffin shop before fretting about her classmates' reactions upon reading about it in PAW. But the real-life parallels, she cautions, are suggestive, not rigid. "Cannie did not have a good time at Princeton," Weiner says. "She was miserable, and in some ways I was, too, but I was also doing lots of writing and activism. She didn't do any of that. I made her this invisible girl on campus who envies everybody."

Initially, Weiner faced some obstacles on the marketing front. "For a while, I was loosely attached to an agent on the West Coast -- a horrible woman, who wanted to make a publishing and film deal at the same time," she says. "She sent it to these middle-aged, white, film guys in Hollywood, who would say things like, 'This is a lonely fat girl's wish-fulfillment.' Apparently there's still no interest yet in a movie because no actress is the right size, and no one would want to gain enough weight for the part." After finding a new agent in early 2000, Weiner sold the manuscript to Pocket Books, just a week after circulating a draft.

To achieve it, we need first and foremost to reduce the need for people to pay directly out of their pocket for the most basic health services at the point of delivery, including care at childbirth, and life-saving vaccines. As a result, health bills push a shocking 100 million people into poverty each year.

The key to reducing out-of-pocket expenditures is to increase public funding for health. Between 1995 and 2013, government spending on health increased on average from 3.4 to 4.1 percent of GDP across 190 countries. The increase in low-income countries has been greater - from 1.7 to 2.6% of GDP. But there is still a long way to go. All countries, but in particular low income countries, need to find ways to mobilize more funds for health.

Increasingly, studies of fan culture have explored Internetactivity and/or particular phenomena such as "fanfic" (fan fiction)based on the characters and premises of a given text (see, for examples,Clerc, 1996; Jenkins, 1992; Wooley, 1999). This essay supplements existinganalyses by assessing the marginality and opposition of a group of fans whoengage in fanfic reading and/or writing and other online interaction--thesegment of X-Files enthusiasts known as "Shippers." Throughbulletin board exchanges, their own websites, and original stories, Shippershypothesize and campaign for the series to acknowledge a romance between itsprotagonists, FBI agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (DavidDuchovny) and, hence, resist producers' commercial imperatives, aseparate spheres dichotomy, devaluation of the feminine/private sphere, andmasculine generic conventions. However, these activities are not sufficientto compensate for their marginalization by the given text. 2351a5e196
