Brandy said she worried she was too young to pull off "Baby," but the song works precisely because it captures the butterflies of teenage love. With bright guitar and thumping drums, it embodies all the exciting bits of infatuation while leaving heartbreak to be dwelled on another time.

One of Brandy's biggest hits from the seven-time platinum Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, "Sittin' Up in My Room" is an airy love song about the agony and ecstasy of early dating. It's also one of very few times that Brandy worked with Babyface, and it's enough to make us wish that they had found their way to the studio more often.

One of Brandy's most heart-wrenching songs of lost love, "Almost Doesn't Count" sees her eulogizing a relationship atop Spanish-inspired guitar. "Almost made you love me, almost made you cry / Almost made you happy, baby, didn't I, didn't I?" she sings, bitingly, on the first verse.

Another big time soundtrack song, "Missing You" sees '90s stars Brandy and Tamia teaming with soul stalwarts Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan for a poignant song about love and loss. Brandy more than holds her own amongst the heavyweights, and when the four harmonize together "Missing You" turns from somber to showstopping.

Brandy and Kanye West offered their take on a classic Motown duet with "Talk About Our Love," in which they play quarreling partners trying to get back on track. The record blends West's then-cutting edge production with Brandy's more traditional R&B chops (along with searing violin from Miri Ben-Ari). With its swelling horns and syrupy bass, you'd expect the song to have a prominent sample, but it's actually all original music.

In February 1972, Robert Mandel was the Epic Records Promotion Manager in Washington, D.C. He received a test pressing of an album by Looking Glass, then a new group. He took the test pressing around to every radio station in the Washington/Baltimore region. At the time, WPGC AM/FM was one of the leading Top 40 stations in the country and was the number one radio station in DC. Harv Moore was the Program Director. He put the song into a one-hour rotation for two days and as Moore related at the time, "the switchboard lit up like a Christmas tree". He said that he had never received a response like that on a record in his 15 years in radio. Based on the airplay at WPGC and all the other Top 40 stations that followed, Epic rush-released the single of "Brandy". Based on requests alone, two weeks later, when the single finally hit the stores, "Brandy" was the number one record in DC without a single copy yet sold. Other stations around the country started playing it and it ended up being a number one million seller. A year later when Moore celebrated his 10th Anniversary at WPGC, Looking Glass returned the favor and played at the bash the station held in his honor.

On September 17, 2011, Fabolous tweeted about Ray J playing his song "One Wish" on a piano inside Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s house during a documentary on Mayweather and Victor Ortiz. Ray J confronted Fabolous in Las Vegas just before he was set to take stage at the Palms Casino and is alleged to have punched him in the face. He was arrested following the incident and in an interview with Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club, he explained why he took offense to Fabolous's tweets, stating that he played on the piano "every day" and referred to Mayweather as his "big brother" since the pair grew up together. Ray J demanded an on-air apology from Fabolous and threatened him, stating that he would "smack" him again.[43] A number of celebrities were present during the incident, including 50 Cent, Mayweather and Kevin Hart.[44] Three years later Ray J took full responsibility for the incident. He acknowledged that he had learned from the experience and felt terrible about it as well. According to Ray J, he went through a time of deep depression following the encounter, all the while trying to figure out what led him to act out the way he did and "how can I now grow and be better?"[45]

Clad in a pink suit, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter enthused again and again over the warm ovation she received from the Madison audience on a perfect summer evening. It was her first show in Madison since she performed at the Barrymore Theatre back in 2010, although she did play the Stoughton Opera House in 2014.

Even though he was just out of college in 1970, Lurie had already developed his own way of songwriting, which included playing a chord sequence and melody that worked for him, then just free associating from there.

I was in my middle twenties when this song came out. I was a waitress in a bar that served a lot of sailors from the naval base. Sometimes one of the sailors would tell me that song reminded them of me. I still love that song and play it today. Thanks, Looking Glass!

While James Gunn has set himself a high bar, he managed to rise to the challenge. The Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 soundtrack (AKA Awesome Mix Vol.2) features an impressive list of both famous and obscure songs for the sequel. Here's when every song plays in The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2.

One of her sweeter songs, Carlile calls this a love song to her wife. It becomes even sweeter at the end of the performance when her wife Catherine comes up on stage and sings with her. This is true love.

Carlile loves covering this Leonard Cohen classic, and in this early video from 2008 she shows that she's always been a master of her craft. Hers is my absolute favorite version of the song. It was written for a voice like hers.

But things got better. She realized she was gay. She found women she loved. And she fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a successful singer-songwriter. She met the Hanseroth twins, Tim and Phil, and they formed a band together that has stuck together. Carlile is also part of the group The Highwomen, along with Amanda Shires, Maren Morris and Natalie Hemby. That group won three Americana Music Awards in 2020 and a Grammy for best country song in 2021.

CARLILE: Yes, I do remember the first song that I wrote. I had just gotten the opportunity to open for the country singer Shelly West. And at the end of it, I remember just being manic, like, high as a kite because I had just played this tremendous show, and the audience reacted really explosively. And I was so excited about it. And I remember telling my mom that the difference between me and Shelly West was, like, almost nothing and that it was going to take almost nothing for me to just be a gigantic country star...

GROSS: I don't know if this song exactly fits here. But I want to play it. And the song is called "That Wasn't Me." And you describe it in your memoir as a song that's your deepest healing song. I'd like - before we hear it, I'd like to know what you mean by that.

CARLILE: (Singing) Hang on. Just hang on for a minute. I've got something to say. I'm not asking you to move on or forget it. But these are better days. To be wrong all along and admit it is not amazing grace, but to be loved like a song you remembered even when you've changed. Tell me, did I go on a tangent. Did I lie through my teeth? Did I cause you to stumble on your feet? Did I bring shame on my family? Did it show when I was weak? Whatever you see, that wasn't me. That wasn't me. Oh, that wasn't me.

GROSS: Well, you've had several turning points in your music life, but one important and lasting one was meeting the Hanseroth twins, Phil and Tim. And they play guitar and other instruments and sing harmony and write or co-write songs for your band. Did you realize it was a turning point when you started playing with them? 2351a5e196
