Hi??, I'm a beginner in photography, and I've always been intrigued by the idea of capturing beautiful moments in the rain. However, I'm not quite sure how to go about it. Are there any experienced photographers out there who can share their wisdom on taking great pictures when it's pouring outside? What camera settings work best? Any gear recommendations? Creative ideas or composition tips?

I love rain, and the muted colors of a rainy day. I love the wet sheen on leaves and palm fronds, the way rain cascades in rivulets or drips off branches and flowers. And I love trying to capture those things with photographs.

With all the rain we get though, I've learned a few things over the years, though, and hope some of these tips can be helpful to other rainy day shutterbugs interested making the most of liquid sunshine.

In order to take good rainy day photos, first and foremost, you, your camera and your lens need to stay dry. Creatively shooting from under umbrellas, overhangs, cars and other sheltering areas can give the impression that you're out in the shower, without actually being in a position that will damage your equipment or endanger you.

I don't like flash photography, especially in outdoor environments where natural light reveals things more along the lines that I actually see them. But even on a rainy day, you don't need a flash to get a good photo.

When you find the light, you can highlight color, even in the rain. Plants like caladiums ,orchids, and daisies, or the bright colors of umbrellas, can stand out against the muted tones of gray that usually accompany a rainy day.

This rainy day has me thinking about this shoot from a few months ago with the cutest married couple ever. Madison and Wyatt are so fun, loving, and adventurous with each other & were naturals in front of the camera together. It was so easy to capture their joyful & intimate relationship in every picture when they were so into each other, laughing their heads off, and showing each other their love through small movements and actions throughout the shoot. These two are champs for conquering the rainy weather and being willing to get soaked for this session! It was truly so fun to shoot in the rain & this session proves that you can take stunning pictures rain or shine with the right attitude :)

This comprehensive guide will explore how to shoot in the rain, achieve the perfect rainy weather aesthetic, and unleash your creativity in capturing stunning rain photography. As a bonus, we'll also talk about Luminar Neo, an AI-powered software that can help you add the right mood to your shots with selective color photography. Rainy day pictures require thoughtful and artistic compositions to convey the desired mood and message. While the weather itself serves as inspiration, it's essential to choose the right tools and techniques to bring your vision to life. Here are some creative compositions to explore:

After rain showers, keep an eye out for the appearance of rainbows. Position yourself to capture this natural phenomenon and make use of a polarizing filter to enhance the rainbow's colors and vibrancy. A rainbow adds a touch of enchantment and beauty to your rainy images, making them truly extraordinary.

Umbrellas serve as captivating props in rain photography, offering shape, texture, and color to your compositions. Explore different angles and perspectives to incorporate umbrellas into your scenes creatively. They can help you hide less desirable elements in your frame and tell unique stories, such as a couple finding shelter under an umbrella, adding a romantic and intimate touch to your rainy images.

Rain photography doesn't necessarily require venturing outdoors. You can capture interesting rainy-day photographs from the comfort of your indoor space by observing cityscapes or landscapes through windows. By focusing on raindrops on the windowpane, you can create abstract and intriguing compositions that present the city from a unique perspective. Embrace the blurred colors of roofs, traffic lights, and architecture, letting the raindrops become the main subject of your photographs.

To further enhance the mood and aesthetics of your rainy images, consider utilizing photo editing software such as Luminar Neo. With its powerful tools and extraordinary presets, Luminar Neo can elevate your rain photography to new heights. Whether you need to correct exposure and white balance or apply creative adjustments, Luminar Neo offers a seamless editing experience designed by photographers who understand your needs. Download Luminar Neo now and witness the transformative potential it brings to your rain photography.

When it was supposed to be an outdoor wedding, the couple likely wants some outdoor pictures. That means you should probably encourage and support making that happen. There are a lot of ways to get creative and use the rain to your advantage in your images.

While rain can mean cold, wet, and uncomfortable it can also mean fun and adventure. You just have to have some ideas and a plan to deal with the challenges of rain. Look online for inspiration or practice on a rainy day alone.

As the shoot ended, Lauren and Matt expressed their gratitude to us for braving the rain and capturing their love story so beautifully. They acknowledged that the rain had added a unique and unforgettable touch to their engagement photos. They eagerly anticipated sharing the pictures with their loved ones and proudly displaying them on their walls.

Reflecting on the rainy day engagement shoot, Lauren and Matt remembered their resilience and commitment to each other. The unpredictable weather had tested their determination, but they emerged stronger and more in love than ever before. The shoot had become a meaningful chapter in their love story, and they would always cherish the memories of that rainy day in Excelsior, Minnesota.

Luckily, some hot apple cider, handwarmers, a few umbrellas, and these two being *incredibly* good sports about the unpredictable nature of the PNW all went a long way into making this a super fun session, despite the challenge of shooting in a downpour. We were able to get some really unique shots because of the rain, and I was so happy we were able to capture the magic that is the Pacific Northwest on a rainy, moody day. My camera did actually seize up at one point and quit working for like, 15-20 minutes from how wet it got, but that's why we always carry a backup camera body!

While discussing rainy day plans with Megan, I suggested she should bring a giant tarp or two so we could put it on top of the pergola for a DIY roof cover. Fortunately she had some on hand and all the groomsmen worked together to put it up and it worked GREAT!

Another bonus backup option was that Almquist Farms was prepared with a huge bin of CLEAR UMBRELLAS! This allowed us to do the first look with umbrellas for a rainy and romantic feel. The umbrellas brought Colton and Megan closer and they both loved the variety of rainy and non-rainy images. Additionally, having enough clear umbrellas allows everyone in the bridal party to have an umbrella so we could do all the images outside until it stopped raining!

You can wipe it off, but be careful not to scratch the glass. If there is just water, I use a dry microfiber rag that I keep in an inside dry pocket. If you do not clean the water spots off of the front lens, it will show up in the pictures as each drop will leave out of focus parts on the image.

Rainy Day Family Photos with this super sweet group! I was with this family back in May to photograph their backyard wedding. Though it ended up being a rainy day, it was such a beautiful celebration. I was excited to return because with the rain on their wedding day, we were somewhat limited on where we could go in their huge, gorgeous yard. Well the weather was literally perfect until I was about 5 minutes from their home, then it started to cloud up, rain and even thunderstorm! Can you imagine how hard this mom worked to get herself and her three year old triplets ready for photos? She was all for doing the best we could under the current circumstances. So we found the biggest tree that offered the greatest amount of shelter from the raindrops. We worked with some nerves and anxiety as the thunder rumbled. And we weathered the storm by capturing some natural, honest and candid moments.

This sweet family's photoshoot at Margate beach in New Jersey was so much fun! It rained during their pictures and they were such good troopers about it! I don't think they stopped smiling the entire time. Even with the rain and the wind, we ended up getting some pretty cute pictures and I'm so excited for you to see!

Once the bride and her bridesmaids were on the way to the church, Adam and his groomsman came upstairs looking SHARP and ready to take some pictures! The best part about a huge group of guys in a wedding party is all the different personalities and ALL the jokes. These guys were so sweet, but absolutely hilarious! It made my job super easy and fun.

Last spring I was in desperately looking for a place to shoot indoors. I was working with American Eagle Outfitters and needed to shoot spring-ish content. But of course it was pouring in Seattle. I stumbled upon Swansons Nursery in Greenwood and Holly and I decided to shoot there on an empty, rainy Friday afternoon.

Ever wondered what happens if the forecast is showing bad weather for the day of your engagement session? The short answer: we adapt and make an awesome time out of it. Then you end up with the most fun rainy engagement photos! 17dc91bb1f
