Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan hosted a fun birthday bash for their younger son Jeh earlier today. Now, Kareena and Soha-Saba Ali Khan have offered a sneak peek of the party, and seeing the images and video, it seems they all, including the kids had a blast. I must admit this hot air balloon cake smash took quite a bit of work to set up, but I just love how it came out. And although this set was constructed with a little girl in mind, it would be a great idea for a boy as well! All it would take to tweak it for a boy is different colors for the hot air balloons.

To bring this cake smash to life, I started with my Savage Seamless backdrop in the color Bone. Then I got some supplies and got crafty! I constructed the hot air balloons using 1212 scrapbook paper cut into oval shapes and carefully assembling and gluing them together. Mom wanted the balloons to be in soft colors with a touch of warm pink. They ended up matching the tutu dress perfectly!

It doesn't get much sweeter than celebrating your baby's first birthday with a fun cake smash session! These sessions can be minimal and simple, or all decked out in a custom theme of your choice, or anywhere in between. So with my 40th birthday sneaking up, I wanted to do something special to celebrate and document this milestone. The adult cake smash trend is a few years old but I thought it looked like a lot of fun, so I set out to plan it!

For props, I knew I wanted a few different things. Pink champagne was one, and I found the perfect rose gold mirrored bottle at Pavilions. The Happy Birthday cake topper and balloons are from Party City, and the numbers with crowns are from Amazon. I had purchased a Happy Birthday banner but Jenna had the idea to make the balloon arch as a backdrop and I love that so much more!

I honestly just kind of stacked them on top of each other because I didn't need to transport the cake anywhere! You could definitely try corn syrup to stick them together though. Maybe putting it in a piping bag and cutting a tiny opening would make it easier to thinly pipe between the balloons? If you try that, please let me know how it works out!

Great question! Since I didn't plan to really eat these bubbles I didn't wash my balloons before using them. The balloons I used didn't have a super strong smell, but did smell like a balloon/latex. It didn't make the cake taste or smell weird, so unless your balloons have a super strong smell or you plan to eat the gelatin balloons, you can probably skip washing them. Hope that helps, happy baking!

Ryan will be 2 years old in 4 days. I have cancelled the birthday party that we planned because I don't know if he'll be out of the hospital. I stare at the TV screen and imagine that the picture is Ryan at his birthday party, surrounded by green grass and smiling in the sun. There are balloons too. Ryan and I breathe quietly in the colorless, odorless room that is so far away from grass, balloons, and birthday cake. It's just us, left alone with our photographic souvenir of what hurts Ryan. I stare up at the screen and initiate a telepathic dialogue with the inflamed and troublesome duodenum. "Why are you so angry?" I whisper to the swollen mass that is both on the screen and in my son. I imagine myself crawling inside of his stomach, sliding gently down into the area of inflammation and soothing it with pacifying words.

Still, I want to sleep in my own bed and point a camera at the smiling face of my two-year-old boy. I want to think about God and life and love in less urgent ways. I want to feel safe. When I was young, I laughed at the idea of safety, wishing instead for unpredictability and adventure. Unpredictability seemed so much easier then and everything was hypothetical. Then, I couldn't see through people and love was just an idea and not a tiny body strapped to a wooden board. I want to get out of this room and go back to our familiar hospital room where at least there is a window to remind me of sun and sky, green grass and red birthday balloons. 2351a5e196
