Like an old-school analog camera, there are no screens on the Paper Shoot. When you're taking pictures with it, you stay in the moment without feeling like you have to instantly check that the photos are good (and then probably retake them). Remember when we just had to have faith that it would turn out OK? Instead, you transfer the shots to your computer via the SD card later. The company recommends using a card with 32 gigabytes of storage.

Other than the little switch on the back that flips between those color settings, there's nothing else to mess with. The only other button on the Paper Shoot is the shutter, which is placed on the front of the camera, right where your pointer finger naturally wants to sit when holding it.

The number one comment I see on the company's TikTok page is a complaint about the $120 price. But I think that's perfectly reasonable for a solid and fun camera such as this, and I generally consider myself cheap. Even most of the Polaroids and other instant cameras we've tested cost more, and with those you have to factor in the cost of instant film, which is pricey.

The Paper Shoot comes with a basic lens, but other lenses can be swapped in to add special effects. You can get two-packs with a radial and six-prism effect lenses or micro and wide-angle lenses for just $25. Plus you can get any of the paper cases for the same price, so you can change up the look of your camera as often as you want or just whenever the shell is ready to be replaced. If you want to get fancy, the company also sells camera bundles that cost $150 to $250. They're all slightly different, but bundles might include lenses, multiple cases, frames, and leather straps. The more expensive models can handle larger SD cards.

One of the downsides of wanting to use a dedicated camera rather than your phone is that you have to carry it with you, and cameras can get bulky. The Paper Shoot, on the other hand, is so light and thin that you can put it in any bag or even your shirt pocket without really noticing it.

Paper Shoot puts a lot of emphasis on the eco-friendliness of its design. There's less plastic here than in a disposable camera, and less plastic overall ends up in landfills. Plus, the camera's guts are minimal and much better than some chunky plastic thing with a million little parts. But cameras use rare earth metals. They need sensors and circuit boards. No piece of personal technology is completely eco-friendly, but I can still applaud the company for trying to minimize the amount of e-waste it's generating. I just don't think that's the camera's most important feature.

I have only a few minor complaints after testing this camera. It takes a moment to actually snap the photo once you've pressed the shutter button, so this isn't for drive-by or sports photography. Also, since there's no screen, you lose the ability to see how much power is left in the batteries. To me, it's a worthwhile trade.

When you upload your photos to your computer or phone, you'll notice the dates they were taken aren't accurate. When I started taking shots, the camera marked the files as January 2000, and there's no way to set the camera's clock to the correct date. I can see where this could get annoying, but it doesn't seem like a deal breaker, especially because the actual photo isn't stamped with a date. Just the file is.

Despite these few flaws, I still consider the fun little camera to be an integral addition to my collection. Even though I love cameras, I am in no way an expert on the details of fine photography. And if you're like me, you really can't go wrong for $120. The Paper Shoot is a basic, easy-to-use camera that makes beautiful photos, and you don't need a ton of knowledge to use it.

Before I even got to photograph a wedding with the Fuji X100, I had a brilliant idea for a review of this camera. I wanted to do a photo shoot with Anelisa. Now the twist here is that I wanted it to be a play on the idea that this camera is ideal for surreptitious street photography.

With this review of the Fuji X100, I again wanted compare the straight out of the camera (sooc) images with JPGs generated from an edited RAW file. In Bridge / ACR, I created a default for the Fuji X100 RAW files which bumps up the saturation and contrast more than the zeroed defaults of ACR / Bridge. With this review, I will note with each image whether it is the sooc JPG, or is a JPG generated from the RAW file which I had adjusted.

For the sequence of images here, I kept my camera settings to the same, but I prefer the image generated from the RAW file, where I bump up the contrast and saturation, (as well as bring up the exposure a touch). I also changed the WB to bring in a warmer skin tone.

I do feel I have to adapt much of my way of seeing because of being limited to just the one focal length. So while I miss certain opportunities, it has made me re-learn a few things about visualizing what my angle of view is, and how close I need to be to my subject for a certain framing. In that respect, working with this camera was a trip back to the basics of photography.

8. Macro mode ISO sensitivity, Drive mode, Dynamic range, Self-timer mode, flash mode is maintained even if shutter speed setting or aperture setting is changed. Also, even after changing viewing mode into shooting mode or turning of the camera, these values are maintained.

11. In viewing mode, the last viewed shot is maintained as even after changing into shooting mode.

Cf. After another image is shot after viewing former image, memory of viewing the image is cancelled and the last shot is displayed as the latest image.

14. Occasionally, preview image on EVF / LCD after pressing the shutter halfway might be darker than live view, according to aperture setting or brightness of shooting target. This phenomenon is improved.

Over the years I have used a variety of off-camera lights on location shoots and at weddings, and have worked my way up from Dynalite and Quantum flashes (and speedlights), to the Profoto B1. The Profoto B1 (affiliate) has made such a difference for me in the ease of use, the speed of setting up, and the sheer power of 500Ws of light. I love my B1 flash. For the entire photo shoot with Anelisa in various spots in Manhattan, I wanted to shoot at f/1.4 to give a very specific look. It helps isolate your subject from the background, even with wider lenses, such as the 35mm.

For the later part of this photo shoot, I also used the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens (affiliate) for a slightly tighter view. The 50mm ART lens is just as amazingly sharp. Here is my review of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens.

Such a great review, many thanks! I was thinking about investing in the B1s since I have read and saw too many good comments and reviews for the quickness and accurate of the system. For weddings and some photo shoots I usually do for a local magazine where speed is key I think this type of system is the best choice of the market, and as you said I believe that the B1s are my choice because of the more power and the cable thing. I really dont matter about the weight or size. Once I get the location Kit of the B1s, I will probably add in the near future a single B2 kit for having the option to shoot a 3 light setting if needed.

i am split in two Neil. I like the smaller form factor if the B2 for shooting interiors, but then the cable free, twice the power output of the B1 seems more viable for shooting portraits etc. Thanks again for a concise and intelligent article.

The video was very informative, and it helped me realize something about the Profoto B2 Location Kit. I noticed that the Location Kit has two heads, but only one battery pack. If a photographer is managing two B2 units on lightstands, there may be a problem with the cord length if he/she sets the two lightstands far enough apart. This would imply needing a battery pack for each B2 unit or an extension cable, both of which Profoto sells.

Neil, what would be the difference, if any, in shadow softness between the two methods you mentioned, i.e. moving your assistant forward and back versus changing flash power with the switch on your camera? e24fc04721
