Payday: The Heist is a cooperative first-person shooter game developed by Overkill Software and published by Sony Online Entertainment. The game was released for the PlayStation 3 in North America on 18 October 2011, and in Europe on 2 November.[4] It was released then for Windows on 20 October.

Payday: The Heist runs on the Diesel game engine. The game contains seven different missions (including the free No Mercy downloadable content (DLC) released on 25 July 2012), with each mission containing random elements which alter the gameplay in subtle ways with the aim of enhancing replayability. The Wolf Pack DLC was released on PlayStation 3 and PC in August 2012. This DLC added two heists, (in total making the mission amount nine) additional weapons, increased level cap, and a player upgrade tree.

In Payday: The Heist, players use a variety of firearms to complete objectives (usually centered around stealing a certain object, person, or a particular amount of money). The game plays from the first person perspective, but offers a few twists on the standard FPS formula. Killing civilians is punished, instead players may take a limited number as hostages. Should any player get taken into custody (after taking enough damage and not being "revived" in time, or getting downed too many times) during the heist, one of their teammates may release a hostage, allowing a trade to take place which allows a single player to be released. While playing the levels, players will notice a lot of variation in a single level, as there are often a large number of random events programmed in. An example of this is the location of the bank manager in First World Bank.

The game focuses on four robbers (Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf) who team up. Their first heist took place at the First World Bank, where they entered a vault by using thermite hidden on the inside of a photocopier and stole a large amount of money. A post-game message congratulates the group, telling them that they are "set for life", but recommends more heists, including robbing drug junkies in an abandoned apartment complex and ambushing a prisoner transport in heavy rain weather, simply for the enjoyment of the players.

Overkill Software released two DLC packs for the game; the first one is the Wolfpack DLC, which was released on 1 August on the European PlayStation Store and on 7 August for the North American PlayStation Store and PC. The new content included a new Technician skill tree that gave players access to the AK, the GL40 and the Stryk pistol as well as adding in a deployable sentry gun. Also included were two new heists, Counterfeit and Undercover. On 25 July, the No Mercy Hospital DLC was released, establishing a link between the Left 4 Dead and Payday series (although this has been stated to be non-canon).[4][5] This DLC included the No Mercy heist as well as the Infected mask set for players with Left 4 Dead installed on their computers.Payday: The Heist was free on Steam for 24 hours in October 2014.

Payday: The Heist received "mixed or average" reviews from critics for the PS3 version, while the PC version received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator website Metacritic.[15]

After Starbreeze Studios acquired Overkill Software, Payday 3 was planned. Following Starbreeze's restructuring plan due to financial difficulties in 2018, Starbreeze stated that they planned to release Payday 3 by 2023.[22][23][24] The game was released for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S in September 2023.[citation needed]

PAYDAY: The Heist features dynamic environments and enemy spawns. Teamwork is the key to the game, as players will have to work together and assume different roles. Players can play online, alongside up to three teammates; or offline, with or without AI-controlled teammates. While players go by their screen names online, the player characters do have names: Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf, and Chains.

In each heist, players are required to complete objectives, usually in an effort to steal cash or valuables. The police will attempt to stop them, but players are expected to fight through them with firearms, except in the case of Diamond Heist, where players can slip past guards unnoticed and steal the diamonds without resorting to violence.

All VIPs are highlighted in orange when it is time to escort them, much like other mission objectives. They will get down and refuse to move if a law enforcer is nearby and within their field of view. For this reason, it can be difficult escorting them during assault waves especially when the VIP is near an enemy spawn. For the player's benefit, all VIPs are invincible so they cannot be harmed by the police or the players, although their profile is still too small to act as good cover. All VIPs will also never attempt to escape even when no crew members are present, or when they are surrounded by police.

Security cameras are found throughout various heists, often hidden away in corners and relatively incognito locations. There are usually no more than two in a room, but there are exceptions for especially large rooms or secure areas. Destroying the cameras will "reduce police intel" on your team. Despite popular rumors to the contrary, destroying half or all cameras does not affect the speed or aggression of enemy pathing, nor the general spawn rate. Instead, each heist has specific effects that occur when half and all cameras in an area are destroyed. These effects are detailed in the individual heist pages.

Bain will notify the team when half of the cameras in an area have been destroyed, and again when all of the cameras in an area have been destroyed. Destroying all the cameras in an area does not necessarily mean you have destroyed all the cameras in the heist.

Most of the outdoor maps either do not have security cameras or have them extremely well hidden. While this happens rarely, the police may sometimes shoot out a camera by sheer accident if you're close to a camera.

PAYDAY: The Heist received mixed to positive reviews. Aggregating review websites of Gamerankings and Metacritic gave the PC version 76.67%[1] and 76/100[2] respectively and the PlayStation 3 version 70.61%[3] and 70/100[4].

With six action-packed heists to complete at launch, players embark on a spectacular crime tour of heists, including shooting their way through a downtown bank vault robbery, trading hostages in an armored car hijacking and even a moonlit infiltration of a high-security headquarters.

Wolfpack was the much anticipated, first DLC pack for PAYDAY: The Heist. Load out with an array of brand new weaponry including the new pistol, automatic rifle, or the grenade launcher which can kill many enemies in one blow, as you execute two intense new heists and 48 new levels.


There are only six levels currently, but they're so varied and so tough that this is really plenty to be going on with. It combines solid FPS team combat with something akin to an adventure game; you're always sprinting from one spot to another, frantically trying to reset alarms, hack computers, interrogate civilians or plant C4. It has that breathless relentlessness, like a Hollywood action sequence, conveyed through a classic FPS interface; you don't even question why you can always see your partners' outlines through the buildings, it's become so normalised.

Those six levels are gems, with nothing wasted; they make the game. Every level looks perfect, is cleverly laid out and never feels like you're limited. Thinking back, the pressure to achieve the goals with your teammates and the ease with which the cops kill an isolated team member, keeps you from wandering to try the world's limits.


Those levels are: A simple bank heist, where you start in civilian clothes and have to burn your way into the vault. A blown-up bridge, where you're breaking a prisoner out of a security van, before dispatching from the top of a partially-constructed building and rapelling away for an underwater escape. A drug den, where you're trying to steal an entire safe room by helicopter (very much like the theft of the safe in the first level of Saints Row: The Third, bizarrely, which also shares the blown up bridge.) A betrayal, where you're chasing a traitor through the streets of Downtown LA before burning him out of the van he's crashed.

The last two levels are outrageously tough, and can only be played on the harder difficulty levels; a stealthy diamond heist from the 22nd floor of an office block, which rapidly degenerates into something like Rainbow Six, and an attack on an armoured convoy that goes horribly wrong, pitching a bullion truck into a slaughterhouse full of curiously heavily-armed mercenaries. (I've never lasted more than ten minutes in that one).


Though the levels are open-world, the track through them is often more linear than we were expecting; there is some variance but, like its spiritual twin Left4Dead, it's minor stuff; the biplane might miss the pick-up of the escaped prisoner from the tower's top or the helicopter might drop the C4 in the alley instead of on the roof.

Despite this linearity, you can never relax because of the Assaults. These are the equivalent of the L4D tank moments which get more serious the longer you spend in a level. These consist of hundreds of cops, SWATS and specialists pouring into wherever you're currently holed up, through windows, lift-shifts, and doors, fanning out to fill all the empty space that you've just cleared and generally surrounding you while you blaze away.
