Click the power button at the bottom of the screen and then choose "exit". It should ask you to press escape but just tap it incase until you get a command prompt. Login and do it quick. Defaults are uname:pi passwd:raspberryQuickly type sudo service kodi stop. This will prevent kodi from restarting. You can restart the service when you're ready to return.

The power supply is necessary to power the leds, because the raspberry cannot do that by its own. To be honest, if you like, you can buy a stronger power supply (4a at least) to also power up the Raspberry Pi. You have to use the GPIO instead of the mini USB adapter and is not a good choice in my opinion, because, via the GPIO, there is no backward protection (here is a discussion on the topic).

Thanks for your great tutorial. i have installed my openelec to my 8GB SDcard with 2 partition. i also notice the speed has improved and i can also save my files and create back up in storage ext4 partition.

another question, ok ay I get a raspberry pi, and wanted to use it as HTPC, in know install openelec and run it from sd card, but lets say in addition to HTPC, i wanna play retro games, would I just use another SD card with RetroPie on it?

Hey, im doing this on a mac so does this work if i use terminal? And after i download raspbian, retropie and xbmc, i want to partition it so that raspbian uses 10gb, xbmc 6gb, and retropie 16gb, how do i do this?(im using a kingston 32gb micro sdhc card and a raspberry pi 2)

I have added a hard drive to record to. It has a USB connection to the raspberry Pi. I have had lots of power issues but got there in the end. Also I have brought the MPEG2 codec to decode the video. I have to wait for a reply from the raspberry Pi team...

A couple of months ago I purchased a HummingBoard-i2eX, a raspberry-like board with a more powerful i.mx6 chip. Since OpenELEC, Geebox and Raspbmc are actively supporting this board, I decided to try to use it as my main HTPC instead of my raspberry.

The main problem were the leds (I will talk about the other one in the next paragraph), Hyperion does not support boards different from the Raspberry Pi, so instead of messing with Hyperion source code, I decided to use the raspberry to just handle the leds. The nice thing of this setup is that you can still use the OpenELEC installed on it, so you do not have to buy another board just because you want the Ambilight while playing with your console or watching video from another device.

The HDMI splitter, the video converter and the video grabber are needed to pass the signal to the Raspberry, while the HDMI switch is necessary only if you plan to use more than one video input. In my case, I use the input from the PS4 and the Hummingboard so, if you use your raspberry with OpenELEC and not just for controlling the leds, you can skip this purchase.

So...I seem to be missing a few steps. I have googled around for a while and can see how to to add a HDD in the full version of the Rpi debian package but openelec is seemingly setup in a minimal and different structure.

Lightberry is the hardware bit, based on an Arduino Leonardo, that acts as an interface between Hyperion and the LED strip. Lightberry offers multiple devices and packs that offer a different level of integration. In this tutorial I am only focusing on the USB converter. There is a version with a GPIO interface as well but I already have a case that closes the top of the raspberry.
