"This is an excellent reference that, despite its size, it sits more often on my desk than in the book case, and I would recommend it to any ultrasound department. It comprehensively covers the bread-and-butter topics of general and obstetric ultrasound and would be a sound purchase for any radiologist or sonographer working in isolation"

Now fully updated with more than 2,000 new images, 200 new videos, and new content throughout, Diagnostic Ultrasound, 5th Edition, by Drs. Carol M. Rumack and Deborah Levine, remains the most comprehensive and authoritative ultrasound resource available. Spanning a wide range of medical specialties and practice settings, it provides complete, detailed information on the latest techniques for ultrasound imaging of the whole body; image-guided procedures; fetal, obstetric, and pediatric imaging; and much more. Up-to-date guidance from experts in the field keep you abreast of expanding applications of this versatile imaging modality and help you understand the "how" and "why" of ultrasound use and interpretation.

"What makes this an exceptionally useful reference tool is the inclusion of chapters beyond the usual day-to-day typical ultrasound examinations. The changing face of modern ultrasound has been carefully included, with chapters based on the dynamic assessment of hernias of the groin and anterior abdominal wall, organ transplantation, the thyroid and parathyroid, MSK techniques and applications, interventional applications in a variety of applications, gastrointestinal, breast, vascular and peritoneal and retroperitoneal ultrasound imaging." "This is one of the most comprehensive books covering all aspects of diagnostic ultrasound in routine clinical use. The book and all references have been updated from the previous edition. In addition, over 380 new videos have been added." Reviewed by Ivan Jambor, MD, PhD (UMMS Baystate Medical Center)

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes ultrasound as an important medicaldiagnostic imaging technology. Manuals on ultrasound have been published by WHOsince 2001, with the purpose of guiding health professionals on the safe and effectiveuse of ultrasound. Among the diagnostic imaging technologies, ultrasound is the saferand least expensive, and technological advances are making it more user friendly andportable. Ultrasound has many uses, both diagnostic and therapeutic. For the purposesof this manual, only diagnostic ultrasound will be considered and further analysed.Basic physics of ultrasonographic imaging was released in 2005; since then, WHOhas addressed the physics, safe use and different applications of ultrasound as an important diagnostic imaging tool. Since it is a non ionizing radiation technology, along withnuclear magnetic resonance imaging, the risks inherent to its use are lower than thosepresented by other diagnostic imaging technologies using ionizing radiation, such asthe radiological technologies (X-rays and computed tomography scanners).

Oblique and transverse ultrasound scans showed a big spleen (172mm pole to pole) with an irregularly marginated hypoechoic measuring 83mm  26mm in size. There was no fluid in the peritoneal cavity. The liver, kidneys and pancreas appeared normal.

Perisplenic fluid noted above the spleen following trauma should be regarded as a sign of splenic trauma. This can be helpful when splenic injury is not clinically obvious and an ultrasound scan is obtained as a screening examination. The left lobe of the liver, in some individuals, extends between the spleen and the left hemidiaphragm and when echo-poor, can resemble a perisplenic (subcapsular) haematoma 2. ff782bc1db
