'Nursing Pharmacology' introduces the principles of pharmacology, including drug classifications and their effects on the body. Emphasis is on the use of the components of the nursing process when administering medications.

The Open RN project is funded by a $2.5 million dollar grant from the Department of Education to create 5 OER Nursing Textbooks with 25 associated virtual reality scenarios. The project is led by Chippewa Valley Technical College, and the textbooks are being collaboratively written with faculty from Wisconsin technical colleges. The books will be reviewed nationally by nursing faculty, deans, healthcare alliance members, and other industry representatives to ensure the content is current and accurate. Other states and colleges are encouraged to adopt and customize these books for their specific requirements, to save students money re-purposing the high-quality Open RN base materials.

The Open RN project is led by Chippewa Valley Technical College as part of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) consortium. OER nursing textbooks and virtual simulations are collaboratively developed by faculty based on the WTCS State Nursing curriculum and the current NCLEX-RN Test Plan. Textbooks undergo national peer review by faculty, deans, industry members, and nursing students to ensure the content is accurate and relevant, written in clear language for pre-licensure nursing students, and based on current, evidence-based practices. All Open RN materials have CC-BY 4.0 Creative Commons licensing.

Open RN textbooks are published in Pressbooks where they are free and accessible in online or downloadable formats. The textbooks are also uploaded to LibreTexts where they can easily be "remixed" by faculty and aligned to their curriculum. Affordable print versions are published by XanEdu and available in college bookstores and on Amazon.

A third level of access allows students to independently access free, online, asynchronous, virtual simulations using a hyperlink and any device connected to the internet. No special equipment or software is required to complete these learning activities that encourage the development of clinical judgment and provide immediate formative feedback. These Open RN online virtual simulations are created using H5P software and have CC BY 4.0 licensing. They are incorporated into the Open RN OER textbooks and can also be directly accessed by using the URLs contained in a working document that can accessed by clicking the following button. Media used in many of these virtual simulations has been uploaded to the Open RN YouTube channel with CC BY 4.0 licensing for potential reuse. Media contains nurse handoff reports, patient interaction videos, family member videos, and interprofessional team communication. The most recently developed Open RN virtual simulations contain NCLEX Next Generation-style questions and/or media created by multiple generative artificial intelligence platforms and vetted by subject matter experts.

In addition to NGN case studies available to faculty within the ADAPT platform, individual NGN questions are also linked within the Open RN OER textbooks as formative assessments with immediate feedback provided to students.

This course will provide a beginner-level overview of how student success relates to open educational resources (OER) through the lens of who, what, where, when, why, and how. Participants will examine the problem with the current textbook publishing model, investigate student and faculty perceptions, identify stakeholders within their own institutions, review trends in the Wisconsin and higher education landscape, explore available resources, and begin a plan to get them started on their own OER journey.

Five developing authors, thirteen contributors, thirty-two national peer reviewers, and an advisory committee collaboratively created the Nursing Pharmacology textbook under the leadership of the CVTC Open RN team. In addition to including current, evidence-based content, online learning activities have also been incorporated into the textbook that encourage students to apply content and make clinical judgments typically required during patient care. Since the book was published in June 2020, there are over 8000 international users of the free e-book and over 300 downloads of the pdf version by over 200 colleges and universities. The textbook has also been uploaded to LibreTexts for easy remixing by faculty, and an affordable print version is available to students in college bookstores and on Amazon.

In addition to creating the Nursing Pharmacology textbook, the Open RN team responded to the COVID-19 crisis by uploading over 120 OER nursing simulation videos to the Open RN YouTube channel. These videos were created previously by the ARISE grant project led by CVTC, and many have already been remixed into new online OER learning activities aligned with the Open RN textbooks. Now that they are available on YouTube with CC-BY licensing, faculty anywhere can remix these simulation videos into remote learning activities substituted for clinical courses affected by COVID closures. To date, there are 82 Open RN YouTube channel subscribers and almost 18,000 views of the OER simulation videos.

The Open RN team is currently developing two additional textbooks, Nursing Skills and Nursing Fundamentals, that will be published in Summer 2021. This is the second edition of the Open RN Nursing Pharmacology OER textbook. This free online textbook is an open educational resource with CC-BY 4.0 licensing that has been developed for prelicensure nursing students.

This edition has been updated according to the 2023 NCLEX-PN and NCLEX-RN Test Plans, and additional NCLEX Next Generation-style learning activities have been added to each chapter. This book introduces the principles of pharmacology and discusses classes of medications and their effects on the body. Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to safely administer medications. This book is not intended to be used as a drug reference book. However, links are provided for prototype medications for each medication class to DailyMed, a trustworthy U.S. National Library of Medicine website, that contains detailed information about drugs marketed in the United States.

Kim brought the latest statistics and noted that the Nursing Pharmacology textbook has some 80,000 users. And while half are from the USA, it has seen significant use in from the Philippines, India, Canada, Australia, the UK, Nigeria, Kenya, Malaysia, and Pakistan.

The Nursing Pharmacology textbook is well known too for its high degree of interactivity. Kim shared that the project chose Pressbooks as the publishing platform and an added feature was the built in support for H5P to create interactive practice exercises. They made use of use of flashcards, quiz questions, and drag and drop exercises (see a list of all H5P activities), but according to Kim the branching scenario activities have been the most exciting.

Kim is looking forward to analyzing student course completion data to explore the impact of the Open RN textbooks. You can hear her enthusiasm for the level of collaboration this project has achieved. She reports that faculty participating as authors have express the value of collaborating with colleagues from other institutions. In addition students have been involved in he project in reviewing content, creating media, and being models/actors in the interactive media.

The target learner will have started in a dental hygiene program and have basic knowledge of common medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. As a dental hygiene student, this lesson will enhance the learner's knowledge on basic emergency drug use as a dental hygienist in a clinic. Ideally, the learner would have completed the lesson regarding emergency drugs in their pharmacology course and can utilize this lesson as a supplement to self refelect on their retention of knowledge and key take aways.
