American folklorist James Madison Carpenter made audio recordings of several traditional versions of the song in Cornwall in the early 1930s, which can be heard online via the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library.[10][11][12]

In common with many traditional songs and carols, the lyrics vary across books. The versions compared below are taken from The New English Hymnal (1986) (which is the version used in Henry Ramsden Bramley and John Stainer's Carols, New and Old),[1][13] Ralph Dunstan's gallery version in the Cornish Songbook (1929)[14] and Reverend Charles Lewis Hutchins's version in Carols Old and Carols New (1916).[2]

While the tune THE FIRST NOEL is also a folk song, it did not appear in print until William Sandys's Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern in 1833, with this text. According to Alan Luff, the melody may come from Cornwall, England, because Sandys transcribed it there, and because two other songs from that region are quite similar (The Hymnal 1982 Companion, vol. 3A, p. 223). The standard harmonization is from Stainer and Bramley's Christmas Carols New and Old, published in 1871.

The anatomy of the carol bears a stark resemblance with medieval French poems, which ironically were never recorded. "The First Noel" was first transcribed in 1823, and was subsequently published as a part of an anthology titled "Some Ancient Christmas Carols," in London. In 1833, the carol was published in "Gilbert and Sandys Carols." Williams Sandys arranged and edited the carol, while Davies Gilbert pitched in with additional lyrics. Gilbert is also credited for the revival of the song in modern times.

English speakers borrowed the word noel from French. It can be traced further back to the Latin word natalis, which can mean "birthday" as a noun or "of or relating to birth" as an adjective. (The English adjective natal has the same meaning and is also an offspring of natalis.) Noels were being sung in Latin or French for centuries before English-speakers started using the word to refer to Christmas carols in the 18th century. An early use of noel (spelled nowell) to mean "Christmas" can be found in the text of the late 14th-century Arthurian legend Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

The First Noel survived and spread across the earth for centuries before being first transcribed in 1823. It was published within a collection of carols simply called Some Ancient Christmas Carols. This London publication sparked new life in the carol, and inspired Davies Gilbert and William Sandys to truly breathe new life into the ancient song. Sandys constructed a new arrangement for the carol, while Gilbert added new lyrics. They are credited for bringing the song into the modern era, and would be overjoyed to know their work has led to the carol being more alive today than ever before.

The First Noel was written as a way to express the excitement and wonder of Christmas. Hundreds of years ago, during a time without internet or phones, the people of Cornwall sang it in the streets as a way to spread hope and joy. The world may look very different today, but we still gather to sing the song for the same reasons. The song is a testament to the fact that no matter what the earth looks like, no matter how much time passes, the encouraging story of Jesus will always connect with the hearts that are desperate for Him.

The popular Christmas Carol, The First Nol, is believed to date from the 13th or 14th century, a time in which all medieval civilization in Europe was springing to life. The inspiration for the story of the song comes from dramatizations of favorite Bible stories for holidays, which were called the Miracle Plays, and were very popular during this time. It tells the story of the night that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, based on the Gospel accounts in Luke 2 and Matthew 2.

Nol is the French word for Christmas and is from the Latin natalis, meaning "birthday." Most medieval poetry was written to be sung, so it is presumed that the words were written with an existing tune in mind. This makes the tune to the song even older, and is likely English or French.

All subsequent versions of The First Nol have been based on the version found in Sandys' collection. The Methodist denomination of Christianity also helped to spread the song. In the areas of England where Methodism was strongest, music and singing were prominent, especially during Christmas time. And so The First Nol spread throughout the land by way of Methodist churches. By 1918 at the first service of Nine Lessons and Carols in Cambridge, 'The First Nowell' was chosen as the final hymn, being sung by the congregation alone.

In Middle English the spelling of noel was nowell. Currently it can be spelled with one or two ells. Unless your audience is very familiar with the old style of spelling, it is best to stay with noel.

I was privileged to be able to sing O Holy Night in my church choir at midnight masses during my 6th, 7th. and 8th grades. It is my favorite Christmas song ever!! Our choir got many praises and thank you so from those who were at those midnight masses.

I breath in a large way (giving them a non verbal clue that we are about to start the piece), then start the music, pointing to each symbol in the rhythm of the song as I sing the song in my head (so that I get the rhythm right). The child plays the handbell he or she is holding when it is their turn. (*Note: if it is a song with a duet such as Away in a Manger, you will need someone else to hold the poster so that you can point with both hands in rhythm.)

If you have enough bells for each child, I ask the children to exchange colors with one of their friends so that they have a new color. We then play through the song again. It becomes a new experience because the children are holding a different color and have to play at a different time.
