As a PCMag security analyst, I report on security solutions such as password managers and parental control software, as well as privacy tools such as VPNs. Each week I send out the SecurityWatch newsletter filled with online security news and tips for keeping you and your family safe on the internet.

Editors' Note: PCMag is no longer rating or recommending third-party parental control apps. In recent years, our testing has found that these apps can be unreliable at protecting your children online, and they can even be counterproductive if they alienate your kids by making them feel spied on. Instead, we encourage you to try free native OS parental monitoring and screen time-limiting apps from Apple, Google, and Microsoft. They aren't consistently effective either, but you don't have to pay for them. Our roundup of the best free parental control apps has our current recommendations.

Norton Family lets you configure rules and view your child's activity from a web console as well as offering parental apps for Android and iOS. You install a local child app on each monitored device to enforce rules and monitor activity. Norton Family can monitor Windows, Android, and iOS devices, but Macs are beyond its power. Competitors such as Qustodio and Kaspersky Safe Kids can both monitor Macs as well as Windows devices. That said, you can still access the web portal on a Mac to set up parameters, view your child's activity, and manage other child profiles.

Norton Family's utilitarian yet attractive web interface organizes features and settings while maintaining ample white space. In the upper-right-hand corner, you can access account and subscription settings, your parent profile, and a Help button. You can add other parental figures to your account, too. Anyone you add will have full access to your account settings and all of each child's activities, so be sure to invite only people you trust completely.

The central feature of most parental control systems is the web content filter, the component that keeps kids from accidentally (or deliberately) visiting inappropriate websites. Kids can also request access to prohibited websites, which is a feature missing from competitor Qustodio.

Turning on Search Supervision tells Norton Family to force Safe Search on Google, Bing, and Yahoo. You can also see a list of what kids are searching for in the Search tab on the Activity page. We tested this feature in a Chrome browser and found it works as advertised. As noted above, kids must have the Norton Family Extension enabled on their desktop browsers for this to work. Norton Family's restrictions on YouTube searches only apply for the Norton Family browser which is available for mobile devices; they do not work on desktop versions of the site. Privacy-focused search engine, DuckDuckGo, is immune to any such controls.

Norton Family cannot block individual games or apps on PCs but can do so on Android and iOS devices. If you want more control over the kinds of games and apps your child uses on their Windows PC, macOS, and mobile devices, look into the free parental controls from Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

Norton Family offers comprehensive parental control and monitoring features for parents of today's hyper-connected kids. It has an intuitive web interface, offers geofencing, and logs lots of usage data. While Norton Family doesn't support Macs or block individual apps and games on PCs, we admire its unique approach to parental control, which emphasizes cooperation and open dialogue between parents and children with its House Rules and Request Access features.

From Parental control, I have disabled PIN (too easy to crack with a python brute force script). I have secured with 2 factors auth both my MS and Norton accounts, and recently changed my PIN on his PC to be something else than a birthdate of anybody in the family (yes, he also guessed the previous PIN...)

I can safely say Norton Family is one of the best parental control apps out there. I spent several weeks testing it and talking with its reps to see how it compares to other top parental apps.

Web Supervision is available for iOS, Android, and Windows devices, and Norton Family claims its web filtering applies to popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. On mobile, Norton Family uses VPN technology to restrict web browsing on supported browsers, and it also provides access to the Norton Family browser (which syncs with your parental account web filtering rules) inside the kids apps. On desktop, Norton Family enforces web restrictions by automatically installing the Norton Family browser extensions on supported browsers.

I think Norton Family is a great pick for large families, as you can use this parental app on unlimited devices. In addition, Norton Family provides great filtering features and has beginner-friendly apps for kids and parents.

No, Norton Family comes with uninstall protection, which requires you to type in your parental account login credentials to uninstall the kids apps. So, I strongly recommend you store your login credentials someplace safe out of the reach of your kids.

Norton Family is a parental control app that lets you block content, give warnings, supervise activity, or offer complete online and screen-time freedom. No other parental control app provides this much customization, making Norton Family perfect for weaning kids off parental controls as they age or simply setting up different rules for different age groups.

That said, Norton Family is best for parents and kids who already have an open dialogue about internet safety, since the dashboard is more for guiding your conversations than instituting a total device lockdown. It lacks the social media monitoring and app management of more comprehensive parental control software like Bark.

We love that Norton Family lets you choose different levels of control. You might choose a high level of control for a younger child but let your teenager have more freedom. Each child has their own profile and custom rules.

Other parental control apps require parents to approve app downloads before kids can use them on their phones, so this feature seems too lax on Norton Family. Keep a close eye on the Activities tab to look for new apps. Learn more in our guide to dangerous apps for kids.

Being one of the more expensive options in the parental control space, we were hoping that the feature list of the Norton Family software suite would match up to its higher price. Lucky for us, Symantec did not disappoint.

There's real depth to some features. Many parental control apps list the videos your child watches, for instance, but usually, you just get a title. Norton Family displays a thumbnail image from the video and the description, a quick and easy way to see if it's an issue.

There are significant limits to what Norton Family can do on each platform. You can only block apps on Android, for instance. IOS users can mostly run whatever they like, although you'll still get to see what they're doing in Norton's alerts and reports. That's not entirely a Norton issue, though - Apple's security model means iOS doesn't allow any app to have the same level of system control as Android.

The app then explained it needed several permissions to take proper control of the device: device admin, app usage, location, display over other apps, accessibility, and phone. Many parental control apps jump into the setup process without properly explaining what they're doing, so it's good to see Norton lay everything out on a single page, with a brief explanation of why each permission is necessary.

This helps the setup feel more organized, too. The typical Android parental control setup might tell you it needs to set location permission, then display the relevant Android setting, then move to Accessibility, then display that setting - you must follow the preset order, and you've no idea what's coming next or how many steps are left. Here, you can see all the required permissions on the same screen, choose them in whatever order you like, and see a reassuring green tick next to everything you've set correctly - it feels much less intimidating, and we had our device set up in a couple of minutes.

There's a neat plus in a dashboard timeout, where your session automatically closes if you're inactive for too long. Most parental control apps don't do this, a potential problem if you get distracted, leave the dashboard open, and your child passes by and can access and tweak their own protection levels.

You can't block apps by category or age, for instance. You can't limit apps by time or schedule. You can't allow some apps to run without counting toward usage time. You can't block iOS apps at all; most parental controls also struggle with that, but usually, you can at least block apps in a predefined list.

Hi all, I wrote some code which you can run in the background of your PC to repeatedly force shut Norton Family. I have tested this and it does not notify parents. The way it works is it loops a command to kill "Nf.exe" which is the norton executable file. This prevents Norton from A: Blocking any features/limiting screen time, and B: Reporting issues to parents. I am currently on a device which Bans Reddit and other discussion websites, yet here we are. To start, download this ZIP file from Google Drive. Once complete, open the ZIP file and click on extract all in the top. Set the location to where you want to run this file. Then, it will begin extracting. Once done, it is as simple as double clicking on the "Norton Bypass.cmd" file and letting it run. For the blocking to take effect, the command has to be running when you are using it. Let me know of any issues in the comments. Enjoy! 2351a5e196
