If an additional nominee needs to be added to the account, the account modification form (PDF) and the nominee form (PDF) must be sent. In the account modification form, the existing nominee should be mentioned under the Existing details section, and both the existing nominee and the new nominee to be added should be mentioned under the New details section. An email notification is sent to the client once the process is completed, and the nominee will be added to the account within 5 working days. You can now add single or multiple nominees to your trading & demat account completely online on Console. We will alert your nominee(s) over email/SMS if your account becomes dormant after one whole year of inactivity and you do not activate it by performing reKYC in time in response to the notifications we send you. This is to ensure that your nominee(s) are informed of the existence of your trading & demat account and the nomination in case of any unfortunate eventualities.

While the demat account opening became digital in 2016 (using Aadhaar eSign), adding nominees has been a physical process until now. This is because the process of nomination that the MCA defined mandated the collection of a physical form and multiple witness signatures. The regulation around this changed very recently, with SEBI allowing an option to add up to 3 nominees to your trading & demat account completely online using eSign.

With this online process addition, do we need to follow physical process as well?

there is one problem in adding nominee online . i want to add my wife as nominee but in any document, she only has first name and no last name. but this portal requires me to enter last name also.thus i am not able to add her as nominee. please help

Thank you for introducing this feature, I am not sure about the mutual funds, what happens if the account owner is passes away. Will nominee receive the notification about the mutula funds as well.

It is a very good ,useful step SEBU has taken to save our nominees from many troubles in future, for everyone but more particularly for people like me who is 68 years old I need a clarification .I have a joint account with you (Zerodha). Should I need to give the nomination on paper as per any format or can I submit my nomination on line.

I have a nominee which I did through the physical form..now I want to add another nominee, to the existing one. Can I add the end nominee through the online process?

I wanted to ask this common nominee related question since long. Finally got an opportunity to do so. Question: what if the senior citizen account holder adds his wife as the sole nominee and what if both of them die simultaneously in an accident? How will their married children be informed by Zerodha?

So I suggest a provision made in the application form itself to collect the contact information of their (especially foreign citizens) children like emailid, permanent address, mobile number, pan number, and the sharing per centages.

I have also experienced the same issue while trying to add the nominee. I attempted around fifteen times last Friday using the trial and error method and got succeeded in the end. Unfortunately on yesterday, my application got rejected citing that the document submitted was password protected whereas the document was not password protected. Now back to square one. My fight with the online nominee application has resumed. No clue when this will end.

I want to add my daughter in law as my nominee in my account. But there is no option for that in nominee area. In others area also there is no option to add relationship. kindly look in to and reply if anybody knows. requested reply from Zerodha help team

Unable to add nominee. Keep getting error message after submitting details. Have tried with eAadhar card as pdf both password protected and password removed. Also tried with PAN card image. Still getting error message. Please urgently fix this problem as my husband is also facing this same problem.

In nominee adding online it was not allowing just first name but nominee have only first name in all the proof and kite app was not allowing only first name i needed to enter last also.

So what is the solution?

In case you didn't know, you can open your account online within 24 hours. Offline account opening takes up to 4 working days. If you wish to open your account offline, fill and sign the forms using a black/blue ballpoint pen. Please fill in the email and mobile number of the applicant to avoid account opening delays.

While we have completely automated online account opening process, why does the nomination process require us to seperately fill and sign a form and send it via courier. Can this be handled in a better way Please @nithin.

Zerodha should find an easy way to let the existing account holders declare a nominee without having people to courier a manually filled form. If possible run a drive to make people aware to declare a nominee. Also, I think everyone should be asked to submit atleast one nominee during the account opening process itself. Is this possible to implement ?

[Off topic] I frankly not sure of complete scenario of how nominee(considering it is available) will get the ownership of demat securities holdings considering no knowledge about all this. What is legal way of ensuring this? Do zerodha has any such services that takes initiative and provide necessary guidelines on the arrival of news?

Having 3 accounts in different brokers , actively using zerodha only and already registered nominee in zerodha , not using other 2 accounts for 5,6 years , have to submit there also , else exchange will freeze this zerodha account too ?

There is no nominee for a trading account. The nominee is required for the depository/demat account, which is CDSL in this case, so whatever the pre-filled form in Q-backoffice is showing as nominee is irrelevant.

Why I said this is because my pre-filled form showed the correct nominee which I had written during account opening but when I checked the CDSL account details, the same was not even updated there. I raised a ticket with zerodha and then they updated it in CDSL, where it should have been updated in the first place.

A demat account that is registered with the Depository (CDSL at Zerodha). This is the account where you hold your securities in demat or electronic form.
