Nollywood Movies is an online subscription movie television channel,[1] formerly broadcast in the United Kingdom on Sky channel 327. Each month the channel offers over 30 different new and recently released Nigerian movies, 24 hours a day. It is the first such channel in operation in the UK. Films offered are primarily in English, with some subtitled, in genres including drama, comedy, romance, family, thriller, traditional,[clarification needed] fantasy and true story films. The channel is funded through subscription and advertising.

We touched base with the creator of the @yungnollywoodaccount (who has requested to remain anonymous), to learn more about the inspiration behind the curation of the content that's made rounds on Twitter, as well as list what she thinks are the 20 best Nollywood films of all time.

"As a child I spent a lot of my free time at home being creative and consuming different art forms: reading, watching television and listening to music. Since I didn't have many options other than what was around me, I found myself absorbing a lot of local subject matter," she says. "I remember one summer my aunt came to visit, and we always went back and forth to home movie rental kiosks [what Nollywood was referred to back then] in Ajah Market and we must have watched over 200 movies that summer."

The mind behind yungnollywood recalls being fascinated by the women in the film who looked liked her and has even developed her sense of style after them. "[They] were very glamourous, daring and feisty in a culture where strong women were seen as unwomanly," she says. "I've always had a thing for female villains."

"Hopefully I can continue to show that Nollywood is a legendary industry, something to be proud of and celebrated as Nigerians. I want everyone who contributed to the creation of these movies to be immortal, and if our platform can help, then that is satisfying enough because they changed my life."

'Karashika' is one of the most popular horror movies in Nollywood. This film is included because the fashion choices of the prostitutes were exquisite. Also, Karashika is the queen of seduction. Minus the demonic part, it's pretty impressive.

In 1957, Fincho became the first Nigerian film to be shot in color. The first Nollywood movies were created by historical filmmakers such as Ola Balogun, Hubert Ogunde, Jab Adu, Moses Olayia and Eddie Ugboma.

Despite lack of funds and experience, self-made directors begin using commercial video cameras to shoot and sell their films for home viewing. Even though this resulted in movies with super low production value, the original, and occasional mythical themed stories, often lacking in Hollywood, instantly made them a hit.

These types of movies spread from Yoruba to a much larger population of Africa. This is when we began to hear about 200 films being made a year, then 700, and now nearly 2500 are made in any given year.

It is election season in Nigeria, and movies are a great way to understand history, the polity, and the politicking that goes on to a certain extent, considering the stories highlight the nitty-gritty of the underground and surface-level activities in the political sphere.

At over 2,500 films each year, Nollywood is only surpassed in size by Bollywood as the biggest global film industry. Although Nollywood mostly refers to movies shot in Nigeria, it also includes films spoken in English, shot in Ghana or in the United States and elsewhere.

Nollywood has matured and diversified throughout the years, producing comedies, horrors, historical pieces, and even noir in addition to the movies that were originally associated with the low-budget amateur video aesthetic.

Nollywood films suffered throughout the 1980s due in part to the scarcity of necessary filmmaking gear. As a result, the industry became stale and directors were forced to change the scope of their movies to deal with cultural and societal themes, shifting focus on the quality of the plot rather than the quality of the filmmaking. Despite financial constraints, independent filmmakers were capturing their films using retail cameras and marketing them to an at-home audience.

Nollywood, the now-worldwide movie superpower, was born out of the popularity of these early video films, which completely revolutionized Nigerian filmmaking. About fifteen million Nigerians and another 5 million people throughout Africa regularly watch movies produced in Nollywood.

Nigerian cinematography saw substantial improvements in the 21st century as a result of government support and modern cinemas being built throughout the African continent. The new generation of Nigerian films had sophisticated plots, intricate characters, and skilled performances, all of which allowed them to be screened in contemporary cinemas. Several exceptional movies from 2016 broke box office records and received recognition at film festivals such as Cannes and Venice. One of which was the critically acclaimed The Wedding Party, directed by Kemi Adetiba.

Nollywood produces more than a thousand movies in a year. Due to its popularity on the internet, Nollywood has become a very well-liked type of entertainment in Nigeria and abroad. The Nigerian film industry, known as Nollywood, was founded in the 1990s. A group of Nigerians produced movies in the Nigerian language for Nigerian audiences to escape the bitter truth they come across in day-to-day life. However, despite great efforts, they experienced stumbling blocks such as censorship laws, penury, and poor infrastructure that refrained them from moving forward. The films go by the name of Nollywood films and often stretch for two hours or longer as opposed to the typical one-hour length of a western film. In addition, they are shot on digital video rather than 35 mm film, which reduces production costs and speeds up post-production. Currently, Nigeria produces over 30 full-length movies per week, employing over 3 million people in the industry.

The African language, Yoruba, is frequently used in Nollywood productions, while English, Hausa, and Igbo are other languages in which Nollywood movies are made. Living in Bondage, the first Nollywood film was released in 1992.

Many have also blamed Nollywood for featuring money rituals in some of its movies, saying this has negatively influenced the vulnerable youth. To mitigate this, I have directed the National Film and Video Censors Board, the body set up to regulate the film and video industry in Nigeria, to take this issue into consideration while performing its role of censoring and classifying films and videos." the minister said

in addition to this, the minister has directed the NFVCB to engage with stakeholders in the film industry in order to express the concerns of the government and Nigerians on the need to eschew money ritual content in their movies.
