The Ninja Warriors[a] is a beat 'em up video game developed by Natsume for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and published by Taito in Japan and North America in 1994 and by Titus in Europe in 1995. It is a follow-up to Taito's 1987 arcade game of the same title, and shares similar gameplay. The player can choose between playing as one of three ninja androids, each with different attributes and a unique set of moves including jumps, dashes, throws, and other attacks. The game was developed by the same team at Natsume that later developed Wild Guns (1994).

The game was generally well received by critics. They compared the quality of The Ninja Warriors to Neo Geo and arcade games, and the tight controls and vibrant graphics were universally praised. Reviewers disagreed on the quality of several aspects including the difficulty, sound quality, and how well the game distinguished itself among the myriad of beat 'em up games. An enhanced remaster titled The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors[b] was released in 2019.

The Ninja Warriors is a beat 'em up game that plays in a side-scrolling manner similar to the 1987 arcade version.[5] The player can choose to play as one of three androids with ninja skills: the slow but powerful "Ninja" armed with a nunchaku, the quick but weak "Kamaitachi" with sickles on his arms, or the balanced "Kunoichi" who wields knives and swords. Per the story, the androids were built by a rebel faction to help them overthrow the tyrant Banglar ruling over their nation. After a sudden attack by Banglar's forces, the rebels had to release the androids to fight, untested.[6]

Unable to defeat Banglar and his mutant armies using conventional weapons and fearing the World Government's forces are closing in on them, Mulk's rebel army decides to make one last effort to overthrow Banglar by sending a trio of self-aware combat androids styled after Japanese ninja to assassinate him.

The Ninja Warriors was developed by Natsume, specifically the same team that later developed Wild Guns (1994).[1] The team consisted of three core members: game designer and artist Shunichi Taniguchi, programmer Toshiyasu Miyabe, and composer Hiroyuki Iwatsuki.[7][8] Gaming journalists have deemed it both a remake[5][9] and sequel[5][6] of the 1987 arcade original from Taito.[5] The original game was one of Taito's most popular arcade games and set a standard for beat 'em ups.[10]

The game was first released on January 28, 1994, in Japan, published by Taito as The Ninja Warriors Again.[c] Taito localized the game for a release in North America around February that same year,[13][14][15] and Titus published the game in Europe in April 1995.[4] The western localizations featured minor censorship, replacing some female ninja enemies with small male creatures.[5][9] All regional versions of The Ninja Warriors have since become valuable collector's items.[16]

Two aspects of the gameplay that were highlighted by multiple critics were the tight and responsive controls,[3][10][14][19][21] and the variety of each character's moves.[2][10][14] GamePro wrote that it borrowed defensive techniques and interesting offensive combos from fighting games, all of which help set The Ninja Warriors apart from other beat 'em ups.[14] Some believed that the game lacked innovation, and instead fell into a pattern of repetitive gameplay.[3][19][21] In this regard, Mega Fan wrote that the game did not do enough to distinguish itself from Final Fight (1989).[3] Player One and GameFan disagreed, writing that game stands out and keeps the player's interest more than most Final Fight clones.[2][10] The game's level of challenge was both praised as fair,[2][20] and criticized as too easy.[14][21] GamePro wished the game was more difficult, believing it would be easy for veterans of fighting games, and only an intermediate challenge for others.[14] Some other recurring complaints were the lack of a two-player cooperative mode[2][10][13] and the game's short length.[10][18]

Retrospective reviews have continued to be positive. Retro Gamer wrote that its variety and presentation make The Ninja Warriors one of the best beat 'em ups.[9] AllGame felt that the game's components were not noteworthy individually, but that it was greater than the sum of its parts, calling it "an old-school, side-scrolling fighter done right."[22] GameFan felt that the game was "unapologetic in its assimilation of the genre standards. If it wasn't so pretty, it's likely we would hold that against it."[6] Both Hardcore Gaming 101 and GameFan cited the game's lack of cooperative gameplay as one of its biggest weaknesses.[5][6] The female ninja Kunoichi has gained some recognition. Electronic Gaming Monthly listed her among their list of "Top Ten Fighting Women",[23] and GamesRadar+ listed her among the best ninja assassins in video games.[24]

The remaster enhances the game's graphics and adds new gameplay elements, similar to the team's previous remaster of Wild Guns.[25][33] The game includes re-drawn graphics, "16:9" widescreen support, a local two-player cooperative mode, and optional music from the arcade and SNES games.[33] There are two new playable characters: a very short female ninja with extending arms named "Yaksha" and a colossal mechanized shinobi referred to as "Raiden".[28]

If you remember this game or have any stories you'd like to share, please leave me a comment below.  Were you able to beat TMNT 1 or were you able to finish other really tough games from the NES/SNES era?

I love AVGN's TMNT review! According to him the turtles theme song doesn't make an appearance in the game. warning NSFW AVGN video here

Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTubeAfter playing thru the game last night for the first time in ages, I can say that a variation of the turtles theme song DOES in fact find it's way into the game. Just beat any boss fight and you'll hear a jingle. It's not the exact turtles theme but you can specifically hear "heroes in a half shell" there at the very end.

Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTubeI'm just nitpicking here as I realize AVGN is going for laughs with his video reviews. Anyways, time to kick some shell and see what the day holds for me.

You'd think a bunch of baseball players would be pushovers for ninjas, but they have these annoying bats that like to knock my cannon shots out of the air. Also, they have a ton of health. I swapped all my gunners over to archers and yet I still cannot do enough damage to defeat them in 3 turns using mostly level 8-11 ninjas. What can I do to beat them?

Totally forgo defense. Just go for maximum firepower. I had my usual team with melee resist4, projectile proof (x1) and they were all maxed out at lvl30 and STILL couldnt beat them (like 9~15 archers remaining).

Sasuke Uchiha has always been one of the most skilled ninjas in Naruto, and by the end of the series, his strength was on par with Otsutsuki's. Thanks to his mastery of the Sharingan, Sasuke can read his enemy's movements, and as the series progressed, he gained the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and the Rinnegan, which gave him access to abilities that allowed him to fight and beat some of Naruto's strongest characters.

Sasuke excels at Fire and Lightning Release, and he can burn anything with his Amaterasu. With his Rinnegan, he can instantly swap places with two targets, he can absorb ninjutsu, and can forcibly attract others. His perfect Susanoo protects him from attacks, and its sword can alter landscapes. That being said, there are still a handful of ninjas who can theoretically beat him.

It's also important to remember that B did actually beat Sasuke, when he and Taka were sent by the Akatsuki to capture the Eight Tales jinchuriki. B gave them a battle none of them would soon forget, and he used his intelligence to trick them into thinking he was dead. Not only did he use his sick rhymes and slick moves to give Taka an unforgettable fight, he was smart enough to figure out that defeating them meant secretly withdrawing and playing dead.

It is true that Hashirama's biggest failure was his inability to save Madara, but he was able to beat the legendary Uchiha at the Valley of the End. Hashirama died decades ago, but he is still regarded as a ninja god who could heal himself without using hand signs.

There is no doubt that Itachi's best fight was against Sasuke. That fight ended with Itachi's death, but that does not mean that Sasuke beat him. For starters, Itachi was not trying to win, and his death was ultimately the result of an incurable disease.

The 3rd Raikage is considered to be the strongest ninja in the Cloud Village's history, as evidenced by the fact that he could fight a rampaging 8-Tails on equal ground. He was also able to fight an army of 10,000 enemy ninjas for several days, singlehandedly.

Even though Sasuke went on to train with Orochimaru in the years that followed, there were things about him that didn't change until after he achieved his main goal: becoming the ninja who killed Itachi. No one knows better than Kakashi how reckless and distracted Sasuke could be when consumed by vengeance, and that didn't change as he got older.

Minato was known as the "Yellow Flash of the Leaf," and he earned that nickname because of his mastery of the Flying Thunder God Technique. Thanks to this technique, he was considered the fastest ninja alive, and other nations ordered their forces to retreat if he appeared on the battlefield. 2351a5e196
