In 2010, Carter started recording new songs for his second solo album, working with Rami Yacoub, Carl Falk, Toby Gad, Josh Hoge, and Claude Kelly, among many others. At Comic-Con 2015 in San Diego, Carter revealed his plans to film a movie he had written and would be directing and starring in. Entitled Dead 7, the film focuses on a ragtag band of gunslingers operating during a post-apocalyptic zombie plague. The film also stars Carter's wife, Lauren, and his bandmates Howie D. and AJ McLean. Besides NSYNC's Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, O-Town's Erik-Michael Estrada, Jacob Underwood, and Trevor Penick, and 98 Degrees' Jeff Timmons will also star in the movie. The film also includes Jon Secada, Geraldo (a rapper remembered for the song Rico Suave), Art Alexakis (Everclear), and Debra Wilson (MadTV cast member), plus many more. In the meantime, Nick's been busy in the studio. He dropped his new single, "Superman," earlier this month, and on Friday, he debuted the music video for the song, which he says is an homage to his family.

"I've been in the Backstreet Boys for the past 30 years, and when I get onstage I am this persona onstage, so to speak," Nick explains. "It's almost like I'm putting on a costume. But when I'm home, I'm just a normal guy. I have a family, three kids and I'm just Dad back at home. So, in a lot of ways -- I'm not saying at all that I'm Superman -- it's just saying that Superman puts on a cape and a costume and goes on and does what he does. But for me, I'm kinda like Clark Kent just back at home. So, in some ways, that's what it means to me. And then, also, a lot of people can take 'Superman' the song and listen to it and maybe they can relate to it in some way."

Nick Carter has written a song for his late brother Aaron Carter, who died on Nov. 5, 2022, at the age of 34. Carter teased the song, which is untitled at the moment, on Instagram along with the release date of Jan. 11 and a small clip of what appears to be the music video linked to the song.

"It's about a guy," Carter explained. "It's about a relationship, really. Relationships go bad, and things happen, and sometimes, you just want to break down, and you just want to go to [the extreme] and cry, you now? That's what that song is about. It's kind of a like a guy saying he's not too afraid to cry for his woman, because of things that have gone on, and the video really does express that. The video is perfect with what the song is."

Though he doesn't know how it'll end up affecting the Backstreet Boys, Carter said that he hopes his solo experience creating music on a less pop, more singer/songwriter level will bleed over into the boy band before they get too involved in the writing process. The group is currently in the pre-production stage for their follow-up to 2000's Black & Blue. "I play guitar now," Carter said, "which I didn't do before. It's more organic, what I'm doing.
