Good things are happening at Nikon right now. They continue to bring innovative, game changing photography equipment to the market. Just take a look at my blog posts from the last year highlighting the lenses and cameras they have introduced. Two new wildlife/sports lenses, the 400mm F2.8 and 600mm F4 Z with built in teleconverters, have changed the way I shoot. They cost a lot, but Cree and I spend much of our year photographing wildlife, especially birds, so they are invaluable.

Also, some photographers were coming from a 20MP camera like the D5 to a 45MP camera like the Z9. Noise performance is always better on a lower MP camera, so this caused some discussion as well. If you came from a Z7 or D850, both 45MP, then noise performance was about the same. My advice to those getting into the mirrorless and the Z9 is to practice, practice, practice. Any time Cree and I are home between trips we spend hours in our backyard bird blinds photographing birds. We want to know every little detail about the Z9, and the only way to get there is shooting all the time. And stay tuned for firmware updates like Pre-Release, you keep getting more incredible features in this camera.

He was diving off the coast of Rurutu in French Polynesia, photographing one of these swirls of milk, when an even rarer image presented itself. The calf swam up in the background, just as Iliya was preparing to head back to the surface to take a breath.

German-Romanian photographer Daniel Dencescu spent hours following this immense group of starlings through the streets and suburbs of Rome. Each day, when the birds returned from foraging, they would congregate in the sky and move through mesmerizing aerial displays known as murmurations, before retiring to their communal roosts.

Barn swallows, small birds with blue backs and wings, return year after year to the same nest sites. German photographers Hermann Hirsch and Jan Lessmann knew the birds would come back to an old farm in the eastern part of the country, so they made a trip to try and image the creatures.

They placed their camera among the cerulean-hued cornflowers in a nearby meadow and waited for one of the swallows to fly overhead. Using a remote shutter, they snapped this image as one of the birds passed above, framed amid the blossoms against a white sky.

To take this image, German photographer Axel Gomille went to Bale Mountains National Park in Ethiopia. The park hosts the largest population of these rare wolves. Gomille spotted this one, framed by colorful flowers, and captured its portrait.

To reach the site where she took this photograph, Sveinsson had to wear snowshoes. The hares, in a sense, have snowshoes of their own: Their massive feet distribute their weight across a wide area, allowing them to cross lightly over the surface of the packed down snow.

Ocelots, jaguars and snow leopards rank among the most endangered big cats in the world. But here, their skins have been used to make fur coats. The ones pictured in this image were confiscated by customs officers across Europe and held at the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change in Hamburg, Germany, for analysis.

Rachid Rezgui is a microscopist and an active research scientist. Rachid studied physics at the Leibniz University of Hanover in Germany, then completed his PhD in biophysics at the Ecole Polytechnique in France studying DNA-protein interactions at the single molecule level. He joined the microscopy core facility at New York University Abu Dhabi in 2014, and has since worked with all types of microscopes, including two-photon, super-resolution, confocal,fluorescence lifetime, and widefield. He is involved in all aspects of optical imaging, such as sample preparation, training, acquisition, and post-processing, as well as core facility management.

Nicolas Schilling is a microscopy application specialist at the University of Zurich's light and electron microscopy core facility. His journey in optical imaging started during his biomedicine graduate studies at the University of Zurich. After earning his master's degree, he engaged in the university's technology platform program, where he worked on a novel sample preparation method that integrates high-pressure freezing cryofixation withsuper-resolution light microscopy, enhancing structural preservation. In 2019, he joined the university's microscopy core facility team and has since worked with all types of microscopes, including super-resolution, confocal, widefield, and electron microscopes. His responsibilities are diverse, covering sample preparation, training researchers, data acquisition, and post-processing.

Dr. Songhai Shi is a renowned professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Life Sciences, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. He has long been dedicated to studying the development, formation, and functioning mechanisms of the brain using methods such as neurobiology, genetics, cell, and developmental biology.

Dr. Wen-Tai Chiu specializes in optogenetics, calcium signaling, live-cell molecular imaging, and cancer research. He actively serves as a professor at his alma mater, the National Cheng Kung University. His recent projects include investigating the regulation of calcium ions (Ca2+) on focal adhesion dynamics, carcinogenesis, and chemoresistance, as well as exploring advanced bioimaging. His lab has also combined engineering technology to construct an optogeneticplatform, which can accurately create different Ca2+ oscillations in time and space scales different from traditional chemical stimulation. As director of the Bioimaging Core Facility at National Cheng Kung University, which is affiliated with the National Core Facility for Biopharmaceuticals of the National Science and Technology Council, Dr. Chiu advocates for the collaborative use of high-end microscopic instruments by internal and external academic andindustrial units. He believes that the researchers can learn from each other and practice the ideals of collaboration through the shared platform.
