Nana Kwame Abrokwa (born 5 October 1968) is a Ghanaian born German rapper and DJ, performing under the pseudonyms Nana or Darkman. Nana is not an actual first name, but is rather a Ghanaian title of nobility. His 1996 self-titled debut album was certified Platinum in Poland and Gold in Germany and Switzerland. The album spawned the 1997 hit single, "Lonely", which reached number-one in Germany and Switzerland, and was certified Platinum in Germany.

In 1996 Aris and Cottura founded the Black Music label Booya Music, which Nana joined as the first artist. The first single, "Darkman" reached the top 10 of Germany's official single-chart by Media Control. The following single, "Lonely", became the most successful euro-rap song, being number-one for several weeks. The album, Nana, released in 1997, is more on the mainstream, American style of rapping.[1] It features numerous other members of the Booya Family, such as Jan van der Toorn and Alex Prince.

The second album, Father, was released in May 1998 and contains slower pieces and more personal lyrics.[1] The songs "Too Much Heaven" and "War" were also featured on the tribute albums Love The Bee Gees and Hands on Motown.

At the end of 1999, Nana's released the single "I Wanna Fly", which flopped, due to a decrease in euro-rap's popularity and the growing importance of hip-hop played in German. Nevertheless, Nana still recorded two further albums with Booya Music, which were not released due to legal problems.

At the beginning of 2001 Nana released the German-language song Du wirst sehen, a gesture which was not appreciated by international fans. The single flopped, and the planned bilingual album Global Playa was canceled at the request of the record company.

After a long break, in the summer of 2004, Nana finally released the album All Doors In Flight No. 7, featuring Jan van der Toorn and Manuell, on his own label, Darkman Records.[1] The album was distributed exclusively over the Internet, through Nana's website.

In 1997 a new album was released, this time it was more mainstream. The songs are closer in their vibes to the American rap music. Multiple people were involved in the creation of this album, including Jan van der Toorn and Alex Prince.

Following the success of the first album, a second album called Father was released in 1998. It was most known for the slow rhythm and songs with a personal context. The most popular tracks of this album, were Too Much Heaven and War.

During his career the artist released 6 studio albums that were extremely popular with rap lovers. The majority of his songs are in English, however in 2001 Nana released a song in German, which had different reactions from the public.

Two years ago, Nana released the album Quem Inventou o Amor, with a repertoire of romantic songs by her father. Dori, however, has not had a new record in several years. Now there are two almost simultaneous releases by these siblings. Hers issued in Brazil, his in the U.S., the CDs bear the unmistakable signatures of these mature artists. Both albums are dedicated to the memory of Dorival and Stella Caymmi, who died eleven days apart last year. Nana’s dedication is particularly moving: “Mom and Dad, I sang for you.”

Dori arranged and plays guitar on both albums, yet Nana’s album is quintessentially feminine, while Dori’s is very masculine (without exception, his guest vocalists are male, too). Therefore it’s particularly interesting to listen to the songs that appear in both records.

Dori sings the same song with a very similar arrangement (piano, guitar, and rhythm, although Nana’s recording also includes sax and flutes) in his new album, Inner World. Retitled “Someone,” the song bears English lyrics by Tracy Mann, who puts a more prosaic spin on the narrative.

Another song that appears in both albums—this time without translation—is “Fora de Hora,” with lyrics by Chico Buarque. Nana’s recording features an arrangement for the cream of Brazil’s instrumentalists: Itamar Assiere (piano), Sergio Barroso (bass), Jurim Moreira (drums), Dom Chacal (percussion), Gabriel Grossi (harmonica), and Ricardo Silveira (electric guitar). Dori’s is stripped down to voice and piano. As heart-rending as the harmonica behind Nana is, Dori’s sotto-voce, dusky interpretation conveys the mood more effectively than his sister’s higher-register singing.

I wish to thank my father who passed away least year and whom I started playing guitar with. He was a singer with an excellent voice and at the time he made the choice to become a psychiatrist. He devoted his life to the mental health of others.

Nana's first solo single Darkman was released in late 1996. The song was a big success in Europe, especially in Germany, Austria, Switzerland & the Benelux. Europe discovered a new musical style : European rap & hip hop. The real breakthrough for Nana came with the next single, Lonely. Featuring vocals by Alexandra Prince, it was a super-hit of 1997 Europe-wide, staying # 1 in Germany over 1 month. It entered the top 5 on most European charts. Then followed the singles Let It Rain (written for his Mum who passed away from cancer 10 years before), He's Comin' and Too Much Heaven from his debut album Nana - The Album. They all entered the top10 in Germany. The album featured many artists like Jan VD Toorn, Jonestown, Pappa Bear (Daisy Dee's brother), the vocalist Mazaya, Alex Prince as previously mentioned, as well as a lot of other Booya Family members.

In May 1998, his second album was out, entitled Father. Nana adopted a new style : R&B/Rap, with slower songs and more mature lyrics. He released the songs Remember The Time, Dreams (reminding a lot of the previous hit Lonely) and Father from that album, and they all scored big in the charts.

Nana first single from the 3rd album, I Wanna Fly (Like An Eagle) was released in November 1999 and it was a ballad about freedom. Then there was a big break and the planned third album was canceled, while Viva TV had already played samples from some tracks of that album during a one-hour Nana-special broadcast. Nana had worked hard and this was planned to be a big release, and a defenite hit in the charts again. Songs remained locked in the booya-bass. I Wanna Fly was a flop and after that, the Booya Family split up. Blo couldn't release this album due to copyright problems, since all the producers and collaborators who had worked on the album had left. Nana recorded another album in the Booya studios. But since the Booya era was really over and the music world had changed a lot, this was not released the album as well. Nana finally left Booya.

In 2001, Nana did a comeback, this time rapping in German on the single Du Wirst Sehen (You will see). It was a great hit on the German club scene, but far away from the old Darkman-days. He started working on the new album which was going to be named Global Playa and would be in both English and German. But it was also cancelled.

2004 : rumors according to which Nana was working hard to get back on the scene were true. Nana released his new single Butterfly/Ride With Me, which was his first single from the new album (entitled All Doors In Flight No.7) that was released in July 2004.

2017 : Nana released a 2k17 version of his song Remember The Time on August 4th, along with a new video. Then came Go Away featuring Manuellsen & Vessy. Both songs were included on his album #BetweenLuciferAndGod, out on November. Album included collaborations with eurodance big names Thea Austin and Ice MC.
