Robinson was born in Fort Stewart, Georgia.[3] He spent his childhood in various locations due to his mother, Linda Wolfe, and her father's military careers, including Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Fort Drum in Watertown, New York, and six years in Heidelberg, Germany.[4] Wolfe worked as a supply technician and became a member of the Army corps. In high school, Robinson studied singing and musical theater. He attended Carthage Central High School in Carthage, New York for his first three years of high school before he and his mother moved to El Paso, Texas, where he attended Americas High School for his senior year.[5]

Khalid began writing and creating music in high school; he posted his early works to SoundCloud. Shortly after graduating from Americas High School, Khalid reached number two on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart in July 2016. His single "Location" began charting, which led to his being featured in many publications, including Billboard,[6] Yahoo!,[7] BuzzFeed,[8] and Rolling Stone.[9] With production from Syk Sense, Tunji Ige, and Smash David, "Location" finished the year 2016 at number 20 on the US Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart[6] and reached the Top 10 on the US Hot R&B Songs chart on January 21, 2017.[10] The music video for "Location" premiered on The Fader's website.[11] The album's second single "Young Dumb & Broke" became a sleeper hit, becoming a hit at rhythmic formats and crossing over to pop radio into early 2018.

Previously, Khalid served as musical director of Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble at the State University of New York College at Brockport. He continues on the faculty of the American Dance Festival where he also performs and is a dance musician for both African and modern dance classes each summer. He has traveled internationally to the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America with the well-known Chuck Davis Dance Company (where he was the founding music director), as well as with The Egwen Dancers, The Big Drum Dance Company of Granada, and Les Guidivoir (Cte D'ivoire).

Khalid was a featured performer in the Dance Black America concert film shown nationally on PBS, and on multiple commercial recordings of African music. He has had the honor to compose, arrange, direct, or perform for presidents, bishops, ambassadors, and great choreographers such as Donald McKale, Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, Tally Beaty, Molissa Fenley, Betty Jones, Lavina Williams, Cleo Parker Robinson, members of the Limon Company and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Company, Papa Ladji Camara, Baba Djimo Kouyate, and Chief Bey to name a few. Khalid's latest international cultural exchange travels have taken him to South Korea with the Korea American Dance Festival (KADF) program and to Brazil to work with Mestre Ramos, Mestre Toni Vargas, and Mestre Peixinho of the popular Senzala Capoiera School located in Rio De Janeiro. As part of a cultural exchange with Cuba, Khalid taught West African rhythms and studied Afro-Cuban folklore in Santiago. In 2004, Khalid accepted an invitation to perform with the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble at their 21st anniversary gala performance and to be a part of a film documentary on the life of Dr. Chuck Davis.

But in those dwindling days of his senior year at Americas High, Khalid merely wanted to have a new song up on his Soundcloud page before prom. Soundcloud is a social media website and app used by artists and fans to share music.

Of course, Drake's label and other big artists have made it clear they aren't here for the humanless music, and Khalid agrees. He says he appreciates music as it is, and AI takes away the authenticity of artists.

The Voyage Music Festival will be at the CCNB Amphitheatre at Heritage Park in Simpsonville in late September. Along with musical performances, people attending can enjoy tethered hot air ballroom rides. Local arts and crafts vendors and food trucks from across South Carolina will be set up at the event.

Wilson is hopeful the festival will give local music lovers a chance to experience new artists. His company, Palmetto Entertainment, has been in charge of putting on shows at the CCNB Amphitheatre for five years. Many of the shows have featured country or rock artists. Wilson also owns the Greenville Country Music Fest.

Dallas Russell, director of artist relations for Palmetto Entertainment, said the artists that will be performing have a fan base in the Upstate. In terms of music events, he said the area can sometimes get overlooked by larger nearby cities such as Charlotte or Atlanta.

NEW YORK, Dec. 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Corporation today announced the second instalment of its brand campaign, called "Lost in Music," (www.lostinmusic.sony), which will deliver new music experiences to fans utilizing Sony's latest technologies. The brand campaign consists of live music events and a Virtual Reality (VR) music video, both featuring GRAMMY Award nominee singer and songwriter, Khalid.

The concert events will be held at the LA Hangar in Los Angeles. The Lost in Music experience will enable fans to immerse themselves in music, enabled by the unique combination of music and Sony's spatial audio technology, which can create space where sounds are virtually moving around. Upon arriving at the event, attendees will discover what it is like to be enveloped in sound as they walk through a specially designed entrance tunnel called the Acoustic Vessel "Odyssey." The experience will feature 576 speakers, which create an unprecedented experience where sound field synthesis technology allows guests to follow various sounds as they move around them in the Acoustic Vessel "Odyssey." Once they have travelled through "Odyssey" they will arrive at "Dreamscape," a performance space designed specifically for Khalid and some special guests.

A new VR music video from Khalid will debut on March 15th at SXSW. This video will utilize VR projection mapping technology from Sony Interactive Entertainment*, which realizes 360-degree stereoscopic images. In the VR world, users will be able to interact with Khalid's music in entirely new ways. The video will then be available on the PlayStationStore from spring 2018 to be enjoyed on PlayStationVR, the virtual reality system for PlayStation4.
