Don't forget to first turn on the piano (and connect it) and then start MuseScore. Works great with the Yamaha P-45 which I connected through USB (which I used here).

The solution from Paulo Henrique didn't work for me. I had to select the "Port Audio" check box. Even though the drop down didn't show any content. You have to make sure that you first turn on your MIDI-keyboard and then start Musescore in order to make the MIDI-Input working.

I installed Musescore 3.6.2 thru the Ubuntu Software installer, i.e. the software center, on my recently upgraded Ubuntu 22.04LTS. I set the "source" to "latest/stable," but after the install,in the app window's title bar, it says "unstable" and. . . it is! Is this an upstream versioning problem?

Inside the "Preferences" Menu, Input/Output tab, MuseScore has a button labeled as "Restart all audio and MIDI devices". I have to click on that button to get sound. It is this way almost each time I start MuseScore.

BTW: I use ALSA audio system with MuseScore because the other options (Pulse and PortAudio) gives me some random clicks and pops while the music is sounding. The other possible audio option is JACK but I don't know how to use it.

Sadly, anything installed from outside of the official Ubuntu repositories is not supported here. However, we (the Ubuntu Studio team) are aware that the version of MuseScore in the repositories (which is inherited from upstream Debian) is outdated as of this writing, and are currently working on getting that updated in Eoan (future 19.10) and likely added to our backports PPA for 18.04.

MuseScore is the world's leading free and open-source software for writing music, with a user-friendly interface and immensely powerful features. This application is available to install in Windows, macOS, and Linux. This includes of course our beloved Ubuntu in both of its versions, Desktop and Server. The official PPA for MuseScore 3 is available for Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 18.10, and higher versions.

MuseScore saves its files as .mscz files, which are actually just zip-archives containing the data of the MuseScore file. Since Ubuntu recognizes it as a zip-archive, it opens them with the archive manager. So I always have to right-click and say Open with MuseScore, which is annoying.

If I set MuseScore as default for the .mscz files, it becomes the default for all zip-archives, which is obviously not what I want. So it would be useful if I could set MuseScore as default for all files with the .mscz extension.

There is no sound, and apparently the synthesizer (if there is one) is stuck at the first note. If it helps, some additional information would be that MuseScore temporarily mutes my system's other sounds.

I have kind of an unusual question. I'm running ubuntu on a two-in-one laptop, and I play piano. Sometimes I use my laptop in tablet mode to display my sheet music, just using the default PDF viewer, which works pretty well. However, I can't make marks, take notes, etc. on it, like is necessary with ones sheet music. I'm wondering if anybody knows of an app that works with ubuntu that would allow me to do this? Preferably one specifically designed for sheet music, like Apple's forScore, but one that works on a two-in-one/tablet PC, and is compatible with ubuntu.

I ran MuseScore-3.6.2.548021370-x86_64.AppImage with no problems in Ubuntu until I upgraded to 22.04.1 LTS. Now I get a screen message every 15 seconds saying, "MuseScore not responding." My options are "force quit" or "wait." If I do nothing the message clears within 5 seconds, but it pops back up in another 10-15 seconds. If I click "wait" the message clears immediately, but it returns as previously described. MuseScore-3... is then unusable.

If there is no user activity at all, the message does not appear. Additionally, if I initiate the playback of a music file in between messages it keeps running in the background even when the message appears stating that MuseScore is not responding.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Libera.chat.

A post on the MuseScore forum described the same problem in the same environment. He went on to say updating to Jammy messed with his video drivers. Everything was fine after he upgraded his video drivers. I did likewise, and confirmed the upgrade, but the problem persists.

I only tried launching the MuseScore notation file after loading MuseScore via the icon that's now in the Show Applications list after doing an install using ./MuseScore-3.6.2.548021370-x86_64.AppImage install.

However, I've just discovered that if I right click on the MuseScore notation file and select "Open with MuseScore 3.6-portable," also made possible by the above install procedure, the file loads and runs correctly without producing the "Not responding message."

MuseScore 3 and MuseScore 2.3 can co-exist on one machine. Installation of the MuseScore 3 will create the association with .mscz/.mscx files, but you can keep using both versions of MuseScore on one machine.

After some more efforts I found out that a Qt version >= 5.6 is only needed when building the master branch, but not the current stable: 2.x

I now have a snapcraft file that uses the desktop-qt5 part and compiles the software: I still have to fiddle around with confinement and other things, but at least the application starts and seems to work (at least in my 5 minutes test)!

 github.com pachulo/musescore-snap/blob/master/snap/snapcraft.yamlname: musescoreadopt-info: musescoresummary: Create, play and print beautiful sheet music.description: | MuseScore is the world's leading free and open-source software for writing music, with a user-friendly interface and immensely powerful features. It is free to install on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Some interfaces need to be connected manually: $ sudo snap connect musescore:cups-control $ sudo snap connect musescore:alsa $ sudo snap connect musescore:removable-media But most of the application functionality works without them.grade: stableconfinement: strictbase: core18 This file has been truncated. show original

They require manual connections for a reason-- both give more access to the system than musecore actually needs, so the user needs to have input as to whether or not they should be connected. cups-control would allow musecore to configure printers and network-manager allows it to configure networking when all musecore needs is to be able to print or see if online.

Hi Steve, I already use Musescore to do my rearrangements in pdf form. I want to use Ubuntu Mate on a 12" tablet and have all my sheet music in there instead carrying loads of books.

Windows & Android have programs such as onsong or songbook etc. and i have all these on tablets but there to small. The ipad is the most common but again it is only good for lyrics & chord display not sheet notation

and I really want to use UM and not the others.

Please do not contact members of the MuseScore Maintainers team here on

Launchpad unless you are absolutely certain that your problem is unique to

MuseScore on Ubuntu, and affects no other operating system. It is always

best to get in touch via musescore.org where you are likely to get a reply

sooner, and others are able to read it and benefit too. Enjoy MuseScore!

~~~~~~~~~ MUSESCORE 2 RELEASES FOR UBUNTU 12.04 AND LATER ~~~~~~~~~
MuseScore is also available to install in most Linux via Flatpak package. Which, supports both x86_64 (modern PC/laptop) and arm64 (e.g., Apple M1/M2, Raspberry Pi) CPU architecture types, though it runs in sandbox!
I have the AppImage into my /opt folder. Works like a charm. But how do I install it so that I can call it from terminal? There, I still see only mscore3, which I installed from snap I think (I'm on Ubuntu). Sorry, wasn't able to figure this out from web
i like musescore, you can install from ubuntu repository and it allows you to import abc, you can see and hear score and print out. it is not difficult to learn to use and useful if you start to transcibe tunes.
The new release comes with many new features, some of which include many user interface improvements, usability changes, musical notations features, importing/exporting support, improved playback support, score management and accessibility improvements.
To install MuseScore in Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit only) you will need to also get Qt 5.4. Instructions of how to install Qt 5.4 and the development version of MuseScore from GIT are provided on the official MuseScore homepage.
I'm a Mac user but one thing I have run into with Musescore (on the Mac at least) is that you have to make your MIDI connections first before you start Musescore. It doesn't recognize new MIDI devices after the program is running. I'd suggest trying that first. Plug in your CT-S, make sure it's connected as you describe, then fire up Musescore. If it's still not working, poke around in Musescore's preferences and check the I/O tab and see if your keyboard is available under MIDI input. 2351a5e196
