In general, cell suspensions are the best system for production ofanimal cells at a truly large scale. Therefore, establishing cellsuspensions is an important goal for every company in the cultivatedfood space. However, it has proven to be extremely difficult toimplement such a system for mammalian cells as well as for fish cells. Therefore, many companies either apply genetic engineering technologiesor use Embryonic Stem Cells (ESC) or Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells(iPSCs).

As no microcarriers or other scaffold materials are used, cells can beharvested and processed without any further treatments. Additionalmaterials add complexity and can influence the taste, texture, and colorof the final product. The lack of these gives Bluu maximum flexibilityin the downstream use of the cells.

Growing seafood products from cells is a promising solution to relievethe harvesting pressure on our maritime ecosystems, which are furtherbeing depleted as seafood consumption skyrockets: while over 90% of ouroceans are either overfished or fished to a maximum sustainable level(FAO 2020), seafood sales, which already amount to more than $500Bglobally, are projected to reach $1T by 2035 (Statista 2022).

The food technology company Bluu Seafood (formerly Bluu Biosciences) isthe first company in Europe to specialize in the commercial productionof cultivated fish. As a pioneer at the intersection of biotechnologyand food technology, Bluu Seafood is producing healthy, sustainable, anddelicious cultivated fish products. The aim is to produce these productsin a sustainable and cost-efficient manner, thus making a significantcontribution to securing the future supply of animal protein. The foodtechnology company, based in Berlin and with scientific facilities inLbeck, was founded in 2020 by Dr Sebastian Rakers and Simon Fabich withan expert team of marine biologists, cell biologists, tissue engineersand food engineers. In April 2021, entrepreneur, and molecular biologistDr Christian Dammann joined the management team as Chief OperatingOfficer. In research & development, Bluu Seafood cooperates closely withthe Fraunhofer Research Institution for Individualized and Cell-BasedMedical Engineering (IMTE, formerly EMB) in Lbeck and owns astate-of-the-art R&D environment. April 7, 2022 - 4 min readPress ReleaseBerlin/Shanghai, April 07, 2022. To ensure the future supply ofanimal protein to the constantly growing world population we need newmethods of food production. Globally, only a few companies are drivingcutting-edge R&D efforts to offer alternatives to the conventionalproduction of meat, fish, and poultry. They use animal cells to producetasty, sustainable products that eliminate animal suffering and promisean ecological footprint far superior to that of factory farming.

"We are pleased to form this strategic partnership with Bluu Seafood asan industry leader in cultivated seafood and board member of CellularAgriculture Europe. CellX and Bluu Seafood have a complementary focusregarding species and market geographies. This partnership will serve asa starting point for deeper collaboration between the two companies andwill encourage more collaboration across the industry. We are solving aglobal issue, and this requires a global solution," said Ziliang Yang,CEO at CellX.

China has the world's largest consumption of seafood and is thereforea particularly important market for Bluu Seafood. Together with CellX,we are working to overcome the challenges in sourcing, scaling, andobtaining regulatory approval concerning cultivated fish and meat tobring affordable and tasty products to market. We are delighted aboutthis Chinese-German partnership in which we are working together on thefuture of food," emphasized Simon Fabich, founder and managing directorof Bluu Seafood.

CellX is a leading cellular agriculture start-up located in Shanghai, the biotech and innovation hub in China. CellX started with domesticChinese pig breed and has quickly expanded to beef and poultry. With ateam of thirty, CellX is working to bring cultivated meat products toconsumers in China and around the world. The company is co-founded bytwo impact entrepreneurs, Ziliang Yang and Ran Liu, and two topscientists, Dr Ning Xiang and Dr Binlu Huang. The team has madesignificant progress since their founding in 2020, and they have nowmoved into the next phase of development - scaling up and reducing cost.CellX is collaborating with top universities and leading companies inChina and around the world to advance the research and development ofcultivated meat, and the company is accelerating market launch andcultivated meat approval as a key player in the APAC region.
