In Christ Alone, Stephen Wellum considers Christ's singular uniqueness and significance biblically, historically, and today, in our pluralistic and postmodern age. In Colossians 1:15-23, Paul quotes an ancient hymn about who Jesus is and what he has done in order to exhort the believers in Colossae to continue trusting in Christ alone. The big question this passage answers is: why should we trust in Christ alone? The answer comes in the three parts of the hymn (1:15-20) followed by Paul's exhortation (1:21-23).

Paul says that if we continue trusting in Christ alone, then we have been reconciled to God and are set apart for his purposes and will be found morally blameless and without accusation in God's law court when Jesus returns to judge the earth.

We need a bigger Jesus than these weak counterfeits. We need to trust in the Jesus that the bible tells us about. Most people you interact with have one of these distorted views of Jesus. People believe he is irrelevant, that he takes away all the fun and good things in life, and that he can only pay for part of our sin and guilt and we have to pay the rest. So people look to other things for identity and purpose, for satisfaction and rest, for salvation from their sin and guilt. If we believe in these same counterfeits, what good news do we have to offer them? We need to trust in Christ alone and offer the true Creator and Redeemer Jesus to the world!

The hallmark of the Reformation and the New Testament is this: Salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. God saves us by His grace. We receive His grace when we put our faith in Christ as the One who died for our sins and rose from the dead on our behalf. We cannot work for our salvation nor earn it through any human merit. We receive salvation as a gift from God. God gets the credit and we receive the gift of eternal life in Christ.

As we continue living for Christ this side of eternity, let us like Paul eagerly wait for our future hope with patience knowing our Lord Jesus has promised never to leave or forsake us. During this time of uncertainty because of COVID-19, we can pour out our hearts to God and trust Him. And, we can trust him for God alone is our salvation, our rock, fortress and refuge.

Article XV: Of Christ alone without sin

Christ in the truth of our nature was made like unto us in all things, sin only except, from which He was clearly void, both in His flesh and in His spirit. He came to be the lamb without spot, Who by sacrifice of Himself once made, should take away the sins of the world: and sin, as S. John saith, was not in Him. But all we the rest, although baptized and born again in Christ, yet offend in many things: and if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

I want to discuss the issue about counseling and Christ alone and the relationship that all of that has to the Protestant Reformation. When you think about the four other Solas of the Protestant Reformation it becomes clear after a moment of reflection that Jesus Christ is the person behind each of the other solos. If you take, for example, Sola Gratia (that salvation is all of the grace) Jesus Christ is the God man right behind that sola. In Romans 5:15, it says the free gift is not like the transgression, for if by the transgression of the one of many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to many. It is the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ. The grace of God is located on one person and his name is Jesus. Sola Gratia only makes sense with Solus Christus.

Then there is Sola Scriptura, scripture alone is the authority for the Christian in their life and practice. Jesus Christ is the person behind that sola. Solus Christus is behind Sola Scriptura because the word of God which is our sole authority is ultimately a revelation about Jesus Christ. In Colossians 3:16, the Bible is called the Word of Christ. It is the Word of Jesus. When we are talking about the Bible we are talking about the Word of Christ, who is the Word made flesh. Solus Christus stands immediately behind Sola Scriptura.

We can talk about Sola Fide, faith alone. Of course, Jesus Christ is right behind Sola Fide because the faith alone that saves is faith in Jesus Christ. In Romans 3:22, we are told that even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe. Our belief is founded in Jesus Christ. Our faith is in the one man Jesus and indeed the Apostle Paul will say there is no other name given among men by which they must be saved. Sola Fide is inextricably connected with Solus Christus.

1) IN CHRIST ALONE is definitely a newer staple in church music, but it definitely has long term staying power. Any hymnal being published these days would have a pretty big hole in it if they don't include it. And that's not because the theology isn't dealt with many other songs, but because it is deeply attached to people's hearts. For this reason alone, the PCUSA editorial committee made quite the misstep.

The Protestant Reformation was a call back to biblical Christianity, to acknowledge that the authority on all matters, both for the Church and believers, is God's Word alone and that sinful man is reconciled with God by faith in Christ alone.

The biblical truth that we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ alone is what sets Christianity apart from all other religions in the world. It is not by the believer's works or efforts but by Christ's work on the cross that a person is saved.

Apostles, Prophets and evangelists have to realise that as they set out their conferences and seminars, that those events are not a means to an end of establishing their ministry or making their name known, it is about Christ alone.

Life on this earth is not exempt from trials, pain, and suffering. As believers, we are not promised a life free from hardship. However, the truth remains that in Christ alone, we have victory over every trial and tribulation we encounter. Our present sufferings, though challenging and at times overwhelming, pale in comparison to the glory that will be revealed in us. ff782bc1db
