We ordered the Gringos Cafe de Olla, the barrel aged, and the Louisianna Bayou. Super good. I was surprised at the Cayenne/Chicory blend. The Cayenne hits immediately, and stays like the good friend that is almost obnoxious but really isn't. The flavors are comforting and enjoyable. A welcome treat! The other flavors did not disappoint. We love the aroma in the morning.

Thank you Barrel Aged Coffee from Whiskey Morning for giving me the best coffee experience I have had in a long time. That hint of bourbon marries perfectly with the rich coffee flavor, raising my morning coffee to a new level of treat that I literally think about all day.

The basic idea behind the Chemex is that, if used properly, it will brew a perfect cup of coffee every single time. Based upon the coffee beans you are using (quality is huge here!) and your personal preference, you develop the perfect ratio of ground beans to water. The beans need to be ground at just the right coarseness to allow for proper extraction, the water needs just be just off the boil, and the pour should be slow, steady, and circular. It sounds like a lot to remember, but it all becomes second nature, and a beautiful ritual to look forward to each morning.

A long time ago, when I was married and living in New York City, I had to get up every morning and go to an office job. I am not, by any stretch of whatever imagination you might have, a morning person. My husband, on the other hand, was. He would happily roll out of bed at 5 am and go for an early morning walk about the mostly still-sleeping Greenwich Village, our wonderful New York neighborhood. And since he worked from home, he had control of his time, which I did not.

One of the most thoughtful things he did for me on those mornings was to stop at the corner newsstand to buy a copy of the New York Times then go to the Greek deli around the corner and pick up a cup of fresh coffee (extra milk). He would then come home and very gently wake me with a couple of loving pats.

Or perhaps, just perhaps, I will spend the bulk of the day right where I am, just sitting on this balcony, sipping hot coffee and watching the Pacific roll gently by. Yes, that sounds like an excellent idea.

Caffeine is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about coffee. But coffee also contains antioxidants and other active substances that may reduce internal inflammation and protect against disease, say nutrition experts from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Also, remember that what you add to your coffee can make a difference in how healthy the beverage really is. Instead of loading up on cream and sugar, try adding up to two tablespoons of milk, milk substitute or half-and-half, and using naturally sweet spices and flavorings. Try stirring in a  teaspoon of the following for extra flavor:

While coffee is a pleasurable part of your lifestyle, there are other factors that make a bigger impact on your health such as eating a balanced diet, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight. But drinking coffee is a delightful addition to those key health factors.

Furthermore, one study found that people who drank one to two cups of coffee per day were 17% more likely to meet recommended physical activity levels, compared with those who drank less than one cup per day (16).

Other research shows that the more coffee people drank, the lower their risk of death from chronic liver disease. Drinking one cup of coffee per day was tied to a 15% lower risk, while drinking four cups per day was linked to a 71% lower risk (21).

Another recent study found that coffee consumption was associated with decreased liver stiffness, which is a measure healthcare professionals use to assess fibrosis, the formation of scar tissue in the liver (22).

For example, one review of 40 studies concluded that drinking two to four cups of coffee daily was associated with a lower risk of death, regardless of factors like age, weight status, and alcohol consumption (27).

Similarly, another study in 1,567 people found that drinking caffeinated coffee was linked to a lower risk of death after 12 and 18 years of follow-up. Furthermore, drinking at least one cup of coffee per day was also associated with a lower risk of death from cancer (28).

Another study in 126 older adults found that drinking coffee was associated with improved physical performance and faster gait speed, even after the researchers adjusted for factors like age, belly fat, and physical activity levels (32).

An enjoyable first cup of the day, this wonderfully well-balanced, versatile blend is composed of coffees from The Americas, roasted to the edge of caramelization. And when things warm up, its our go-to coffee for making a batch of cold brew!

The medium roast has a nice balanced flavor that I can enjoy with or without milk and sugar. My partner (a loose leaf tea drinker) enjoys sharing the medium roast with me on this bright Spring mornings!

I really like the idea of using my morning coffee as a time to slow down for a second. But over the past couple years, I've gotten into the bad habit of watching a few minutes of TV while scarfing down my breakfast and coffee, and either chugging the last half mug or throwing it in a travel cup before heading out for the day. But since I've recently cut down to only one quality mug in the morning, and my schedule is more flexible at home due to Covid-19, I see the opportunity to make a better morning routine for myself.

Scientists testing coffee against plain caffeine found that plain caffeine only partially reproduces the effects of drinking a cup of coffee, activating areas of the brain that make you feel more alert but not the areas of the brain that affect working memory and goal-directed behavior.

The scientists recruited people who drank a minimum of one cup of coffee per day and asked them to refrain from eating or drinking caffeinated beverages for at least three hours before the study. They interviewed the participants to collect sociodemographic data, and then did two brief functional MRI scans: one before and one 30 minutes after either taking caffeine or drinking a standardized cup of coffee. During the functional MRI scans, the participants were asked to relax and let their minds wander.

Because of the known neurochemical effects of drinking coffee, the scientists expected that the functional MRI scans would show that the people who drank coffee had higher integration of networks that are linked to the prefrontal cortex, associated with executive memory, and the default mode network, involved in introspection and self-reflection processes. They found that the connectivity of the default mode network was decreased both after drinking coffee and after taking caffeine, which indicates that consuming either caffeine or coffee made people more prepared to move from resting to working on tasks.

The authors pointed out that it is possible that the experience of drinking coffee without caffeine could cause these benefits: this study could not differentiate the effects of the experience alone from the experience combined with the caffeine. There is also a hypothesis that the benefits coffee-drinkers claim could be due to the relief of withdrawal symptoms, which this study did not test.

Paul Wisneski has matched coffees for the largest coffee wholesalers in the country. He has visited coffee farms searching for the best coffees in the world, even judging the 2011 Utz National Coffee Competition in Honduras. Paul has 20+ years of coffee experience.

Dan Jansen has 20+ years of coffee roasting and production experience. He is an expert coffee roaster and cupper, and has many years of experience in industrial grinding, packaging, and order fulfillment.

Greg Van Zeeland, responsible for finance and procurement, has nearly 25 years of experience in finance, the last 15 of them in the coffee industry learning the trends of the coffee futures market and buying coffee contracts.

After many years of working at a large coffee roaster, Dan, Greg, and Paul noticed a troubling trend in the industry: Coffee roasters throughout the country were continuing to merge and grow so large that they no longer valued the customers that got them there. The three decided to leave and pursue their own dream of providing astonishing coffees and great service for customers of all sizes. This business plan has not only proven to be extremely successful, but it's also been very rewarding for the three owners to form great personal relationships with their customers. 17dc91bb1f
