In 1981 the Vatican commissioned a 64 page comic book biography from Marvel, titled The life of Pope John Paul II. It was written by Steven Grant and Father Mieczyslaw Malinski, inked by Joe Sinnott and penciled by John Tartaglione. The project was overseen by Father Mieczyslaw Malinski as well as Marvel executives. It was intended to forever embody the then new Pope into comics form. It covered everything from his birth in Poland, his narrow escape from being placed in a concentration camp for his pro-resistance views by studying for the priesthood, his love for writing poetry, and his desire to become an actor.

Back in the 1970s, Marvel released a book called How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way which instructed and inspired a generation of young artists. Fifty years later, the company is updating its approach by partnering with online art instruction platform Proko to offer a comprehensive online course specifically geared to the techniques and workflows of making comics.

Proko is an online art instruction community founded by atelier-trained fine artist Stan Prokopenko as an outgrowth of his wildly popular how-to videos that he began posting on YouTube in the early 2010s. Since then, his video channel has topped 3 million subscriptions. The Proko.com site, featuring a full curriculum of video lessons in traditional and digital art, has 180,000 accounts, including over 100,000 added since the site expanded in 2020.

Prokopenko says he was pursuing Marvel about co-launching a class for a while through mutual connections and was delighted when the leading comics publisher in the country agreed to partner on the course.

One thing the class will not and cannot offer is an inside track on portfolio reviews. Marvel, like every other comics company, never reviews unsolicited submissions to protect itself from accusations of stealing ideas from fans. Review and critique of student work will be done by the class instructors. Students are free to post their work online or submit portfolios through normal channels with the company or at conventions.

Thankfully, you can save some money by using these sites to read comics online for free and completely legally. No matter what kind of comics you're into, you should find them on the best sites for free comics.

Where do you go to read Marvel Comics online for free? Marvel Unlimited is the obvious answer, but most know it solely as a paid-for service. With a monthly or annual subscription, you get access to over 30,000 comics. Its corresponding mobile app is one of the best Marvel apps for comic book fans.

Of course, you'll see a lot of debut series, but keep checking because it further features entire miniseries for you to enjoy, including comics related to current and previous shows and films, like Marvel's Hero Project on Disney+ and digital-exclusive "Infinity Comics" related to the Loki TV series. If you enjoy the app, you can join Marvel Unlimited with monthly or annual subscriptions. This includes downloads for offline reading, creator and character spotlights, and plenty more fantastic Marvel Unlimited features.

Where can you go to read DC Comics online? DC Kids used to be a good option, and while it still features animations (for which the company is greatly celebrated, giving youngsters a good entry-point into comics), its comic selection has dwindled to nothing. Instead, then, there's DC Universe Infinity, the major publisher's alternative to Marvel Unlimited.

If you want to read comics online, Libby is an ideal choice. It's brought to you by your local library service, you get a whole host of free stuff to borrow for 21 days. Plus, if you're not sure you'd like a particular title, you can read a sample before borrowing properly.

Dark Horse is a great heavy-hitter with the license for numerous much-loved franchises. The company's Free Books page is a reflection of that, which also acts as a great way of getting newcomers into comics.

Let's say you have a friend who loves Stranger Things. Get them hooked by introducing them to the free comics! Maybe you love playing Overwatch. Why not take some time away from the PlayStation by sampling Dark Horse's miniseries expanding on that world?

You won't find the big two here: Marvel and DC are absent from the list of publishers on DriveThru. However, there's a large collection of books with a variety of comics that span genres and styles. And you will find Marvel and DC's bigger competitors, like Valiant Comics, Top Cow, and Aspen Comics.

DriveThru's filters can be used to browse genres, formats, publishers, and prices. Use them to narrow down the selection of comics and start exploring. It's hard to know what you'll find here, but DriveThru is always a good place to read free comics online.

You can also filter the list by genre on the left of the screen, helping you find the comics you're interested in. The list is updated hourly, so check back regularly for new titles. In a way, it's essentially an aggregate of free content, so if you're not sure where to start off, this is the best place to explore.

Except this site goes above and beyond the call of duty. It's an archive celebrating the whole genre, meaning it includes a number of features you won't find elsewhere. There are sections devoted to fanzines, pulp fiction, non-English comics, newspapers and magazines, adverts, booklets, public information posters, and even coloring books.

The series has now concluded with the Final Quest story arc, available from Dark Horse. The publisher has also released the complete ElfQuest series in collected editions. But you can get a good head-start on the series by reading the rest of the comics online for free.

If you know a thing or two about comics you may have considered starting your own online comic book store. Or perhaps you already own a traditional comic book store and you want to reach more people with an online shop.

If you are looking to start a comic book store, the chances are you are already a private collector of comics, or at least have a serious interest in them. One good place to source comics to sell is from other private collectors.

However, buying your comics from thrift stores can be time-consuming. To run a successful business you would need to spend considerable time sifting through multiple thrift stores to find the comics that are worth buying and selling.

One of the biggest issues with buying from collectors and thrift stores is inconsistency in supply and price. Buying direct from the publisher can be a good idea if you want a more reliable supply chain for your store. This is because you will typically be able to buy comics at a set price and you will know if or when certain comics will be available.

However, there are some downsides. For example, prices are often higher than those from thrift stores. You will also only be able to buy new comics, so will not be able to access old and rare comics through this method.

Marketplaces are another option for selling comics online. There are several global online marketplaces you can choose from, such as more generalist marketplaces like eBay, where you can sell practically anything, to more specialist comic marketplaces such as Comiconnect.

Social media platforms are a much newer, but more direct, method for selling comics online. This functionality has been introduced by many social media companies such as Facebook and Instagram in an effort to keep people on their apps, even when they are shopping.

So, you have your comics and you have a shop. Now you need to add two and two together so you can start selling. This is usually a fairly straightforward process, but it is worth taking the time to ensure that you properly showcase your comics. After all, this is the point at which your customers decide whether what you offer is for them. 0852c4b9a8
