Hey there, happy new year. I've wanted to do some song analysis for some time now and the new year would be the best time of the year for this song, considering the narrative I will use to explain my idea of the song.

Remember, every person has their own idea of a song. What the song means, the emotions involved, the story, everything is custom to the listener. So, with this is in mind, here is my analysis of the song.

To notice that the room is square is a very minor detail. Yet, the singer noticed it. When you are in love with someone, you notice the little things. You try to learn as much as you can about the person you love. Something as simple as the geometry of the room does not go unobserved by the singer, showing how much she loves him.

Alternatively, this also shows how awkward her current situation is. She is present in his bed, as he sleeps. She isn't sitting there while he is doing something. No, she is there while he sleeps. This shows that their relationship is intimate, sexual even, which sets the stage for the tragedy to come.

Starting now, the song is entering one of my most favorite and important parts of the song. I read a story a long time ago and I associate the song to the story now. In the story, the protagonist finally admits her feelings for the one she loves. The other girl, already dating someone else was on a break from her relationship. Thus, the two finally get together for one night. They get together for the New Years Eve. As the snow starts falling, the two play out in the snow.

Same goes here. This is a simple line, meaningless even. Still, the imagery and emotions of these lines, coupled with the way Mitski sings them, shows just how much this moment means to her. The entire catalog of big name love song writers can be weighed on a scale and this one line would still outweigh them.

No doubt, Mitski has outdone herself with this line. This line is beyond wonderful.

The buildup is wonderful too. It gives us hope, it gives us courage, it is like a warm blanket on a cold winter night.

Starting here, the song enters a heartbreaking phase. The instrumental changes reflect this. It slows down, just one instrument. The piano. A sombre and sad melody. Why?

Because the singer has finally accepted her fate. She knows she will never have him. She will never be able to live her life with him. This, she is finally going...

Again, yet another heartbreaking line. When you love someone, they make you happy. In return, you want to make their life as amazing an example of heaven as possible. She is telling him that he made her happy. The least she can wish was that he had a good night. A good sleep, good dreams and (knowing Mitski's songs) good sex. She wished all of this for him as he had made her happy.

It is time to say goodbyes now.

Again, the music starts picking up. I might be extrapolating and stretching the song a bit here (of which I seem to be doing a lot) but this line can be taken that she is happy she is getting touch him again. She is getting to be with him for one last time.

Hey friends! I received a small tesla coil for Christmas today (Joytech Bluetooth SSTC SS02) and it is an impressive device.
