Thanks for the tips and the work-around for this issue. I thought this might have been a bug because I didn't have this issue until sometime last week. My mom doesn't text... she only sends messages through messenger so when I started having issues with reading messages after either me sending one to her or vice versa I couldn't figure out what was going on. But at least now I know it's a bug and I will do the tips that have been suggested. Thanks so much.

The easiest way to fix this problem now is by just downloading the newest Version (185) from the messenger.com website! Works perfect! When it asks you to enter password for your login keychain, make sure you enter it and then click "Always Allow" Good to go now!

I have the latest mac0S update version and my facebook messenger still is not loading messages. It is just completely blank. I've signed out and signed back in. I've uninstalled and reinstalled app. I've outreached support and have not heard anything back...any other suggestions or ideas? Literally one day it was working on my mac and next it wasn't.

Thank you! I was having that issue and noticed it happened right after an update. I assumed it was caused by the update but since I was able to search for a specific chat to pull it up, I ignored it for a bit. Then another update came but they didn't fix the display issue. Fortunately, I had a time machine backup prior to the first update. I restored my January snapshot and voila! I can see my chat list again! For reference, I am on macOS 10.15.7 (I can't go any higher. I have a Late 2013). The messenger app version I restored to (which works) is Version 171.0.0.29.105 (426844812)

The version of Messenger that I use through FB (facebook) seems to have more features than the PC stand alone version that I downloaded on my computer. I downloaded this version from Microsoft because it didn't try to give me any other junk. You can download Messenger from a lot of different sources but I thought they were all the same.

Thank you kindly for the reply. Today I went to the Messenger.com website and simply clicked on "send message". That brought up my messenger account and message list. Amazingly, it is full featured as when using messenger through facebook in the tiny box. So I added this link to my tool bar for a better working messenger.... for the time being. Thanks again!

Yes, yes, yes! Day 2 and all is very well using the official version of messenger from the messenger.com web site! It is full featured just as it should be, and clean and lovely as it opens full page. I felt like I was in jail when I used the tiny messenger box inside of FB, although it could be opened full page. That is all history now.

Can't find a way yet for it to show me a little number if I have new messages though without opening it or looking on FB. So... I left my old unofficial messenger installed and it shows a little number on the bottom task bar if I have new messages. Amazing.

Only thing that threw me is when I tried to attach a photo to the new, official messenger, it just opened small, would not go large, and not full featured. But then today I realized that I just have to write something under the thumbnail pic and hit Enter and the pic becomes full featured.

Dumbest thing about the old messenger I was using that I downloaded from the Microsoft site, was that attached pics would be png's, not jpegs. That is all fixed now with the new version. Huge relief. I thought all versions of messenger were the same but they are not.

I added the facebook messenger to my website. I have seen that I have to change the position of the facebook messenger badge because it is hiding my log in button on the mobile version. So either it would be nice to find out how I can change the position or I can deactivate the messenger on the mobile site.

Thanks for your reply. That would be the solution for re-positioning the messenger badge, right? I have noticed that I dont linke the messenger bot on the mobile version. So I would prefer the bot just on the desktop version. Do you know how I can change that?

Facebook's official messenger app is the obvious way for many smartphone users to chat and share content with their social media contacts. Since Facebook deactivated the messaging feature within their mobile app, users appear to have no choice but to switch to the separate Messenger app. This becomes especially annoying when you realize that the app always runs in the background, consuming both battery power and data. This should also ring alarm bells when it comes to data protection. Facebook Messenger constantly scans internal data such as contacts, browser history, calendar info, and even GPS data.

With such a plethora of social media platforms and instant messaging apps, it can be very difficult to keep track of everything. Multi-messenger apps bring several services together into one easily accessible app. This is especially handy because it means that you can uninstall multiple apps from different providers, including Facebook Messenger.

One major downside of such apps is compatibility. Because multi-messenger software like this retrieves data from different services, updates to these services can often cause instability, or even incompatibility. It has emerged that some multi messenger apps like IM+ (Android and iOS) had to stop supporting Facebook because of these reasons. As a company, Facebook has also been known to block third-party integration of your apps. This has meant that good quality apps for Facebook, like Social Media Vault and Puffin, have to link back to Facebook Messenger to retrieve messages.

If it is the case that you are not just looking for an alternative to Facebook messenger, but want to completely switch to a different social network, our Digital Guide also has plenty of recommendations relating to this.
