Install Seagate Network Assistant on one or more computers connected to the same network as your NAS. It is a software utility that helps you detect and access NAS OS devices on the network. Seagate Network Assistant give you instant information on the NAS's:

LaCie Network Assistant is a great program that that gives you the possibility to check the network and see what's going on. First you have to download the application, and then install on your computer. Run the application by clicking the icon in the system tray.

When I use the Lacie network assistant and go to Volumes and click the Authentication button and enter my user details, it says that it could not list volumes as admin and that I have to check authentication.

Reboot the computer, which re-loads the Lacie Network Assistant (sometimes finds the named NAS sometimes it just indicates the IP address) - I've done this 3-4 times before it actually mounts the drives for access. I think it may be a boot order thing (PC -> netork -> NAS vs NAS -> network -> PC - the later seems to be what it needs). Note: just reloading the Lacie Network Assistant doesn't seem to help...

The NS2 ships with a CD that contains the LaCie Network Assistant and backup software for both the Mac and Windows operating systems. The Network Assistant installs in the system tray, and finds the NS2 on your network. (Figure 2).

All things considered, at the current price of some $500 (disk-less version, or $1,100 and $2,000 for 10TB and 20TB, respectively) it's an excellent choice if you're looking for a robust and easy-to-use network-based storage solution. For more options in terms of features, also check out the Synology DS1511+ or one of alternatives on this list.

Also on the back of the server, the 5big NAS Pro comes with two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports. These ports can be used to host more storage devices or printers. The server comes with two Gigabit Ethernet ports. Only one of these ports is needed for the server to serve a network but they can be used at the same time to either balance the load or for failsafe purposes. They can't be aggregated to increase the data throughput rates of the server, unfortunately. This is similar to the case of the recently reviewed Seagate Business Storage NAS.

As with the 5big Network 2, the LaCie 5big NAS Pro's setup process was fast and easy in my trial. The device includes the LaCie Network Assistant software that helps identify the NAS on the network and maps the network drives. If you buy the 10TB or 20TB versions, the server is preconfigured with SimplyRAID, comes with one public share folder, and can be used right away via the single mapped network drive. The LaCie Network Assistant software also helps launch the device's Web interface, which helps further customize the NAS server via its NAS OS 3.0 firmware.

I also noticed that the server required restarting for its newly created share folders to be available to the network. This is not a big deal but can be a nuisance; all the other servers I've reviewed allow you to do that on the fly.

For business users, the server offers NetBackup, iSCSI, and integration with Active Directory. NetBackup allows for rsyn-compatible devices or other LaCie NAS servers to use the 5big NAS Pro as the backup destination. iSCSI is a feature that enables network computers to use a portion of the server's storage as their own. Active Directory means that in a centralized network, the administrator can manage the NAS server's resources via the Windows-based domain controller.

Internally, the LaCie LaPlug supports 802.11 b/g/n as a client only. This is not a server in the traditional sense, but it does serve as a NAS server connected as a client to the wireless network. I am not sure why LaCie delivered a wireless-n class client as the USB media sharing devices that do not have multiple disk drives or a significant amount of memory that serves as a cache are not able to deliver over 10Mbits performance and wireless-n is really overkill here. With that said, wireless chipsets come by default supporting b/g/n so the team at LaCie probably only had this configuration as a choice for the LaPlug. More on performance and why is it important later.

One can also manage the LaCie LaPlug using the web browser interface. I could not find any good documentation on the LaCie website on how to manage the LaPlug using the web interface, but anyone familiar with any of the major branded network devices should be able to manage it quickly. By default, the FTP and Media Services are disabled. I always find it interesting that many companies provide their devices with the services disabled by default. I have not figured out why as of yet, but I can make some assumptions with regard to performance of the device being degraded when it is running multiple pieces of software, but that would only be an assumption. I enabled the media and FTP services so I could access my content on my USB Memory Stick that was soon to be connected to the LaCie LaPlug.

My next test was adding a 1080p high definition video. This is where the LaCie LaPlug faltered, or should I say, the USB Memory Stick coupled with the LaCie LaPlug faltered. 1080p content is pushing a 19201280 image at 24 frames per second across the network requiring a good deal of performance on the network device to be able to deliver and keep up the streaming. My network at home is a 1000Mbits network composed of wired and wireless devices. The wireless portion is dual band g and n wireless where I can push over 30Mbits over the wireless connection using my home Network Attached Storage device, which has four 1TB SATA drives in it.

LaCie includes a simple web-based File Explorer that can be accessed on the local network, or via the Internet. The look and feel is reminiscent of the PogoPlug powered Buffalo CloudStor that I reviewed on The Gadgeteer in August. The first time I logged into the web browser-based management interface ,I had an alert waiting for me to upgrade the firmware, which I did without any issue. There was a short period of downtime, which is to be expected.

Diskless NAS units often require some sort of setup program running on one of the clients to be able to get the NAS up and running with the proper configuration. For example, Netgear uses the RAIDar utility while Synology has the Synology Network Assistant. On the other hand, some NAS vendors make their unit obtain a DHCP address even when diskless (without waiting for any special setup procedure / timeouts). LaCie adopts an innovative strategy here. Instead of relying on the internal firmware to do this (which might be an issue if that is itself corrupted), LaCie provides a bootable USB key. The rescue disk can also be downloaded from the website and put on the user's own USB drive, if necessary. One needs to simply plug in the key to one of the USB 2.0 ports of the NAS and boot up the unit. After entering the MAC ID of the network interface, the unit can be configured as per the user requirements. Disks can be added and the firmware can be upgraded, amongst other things

The UI of the NAS OS 3 hasn't really changed since the 2big NAS review. Certain additional options are available thanks to the 5-bay and dual GbE link nature of the offering. The available file serving protocols include SMB, AFP, NFS, FTP, SFTP and iSCSI. In today's review, we will be only looking at SMB (CIFS) and iSCSI. NFS evaluation will follow in the second part of the review. An interesting aspect is that each of these protocols can be set to be active on one or both of the network interfaces. However, we set up the network interfaces for link aggregation in our benchmarking. The ability to allow protocols to operate on certain interfaces only provides the network administrator with more control over performance in the bigger scheme of things. A limitation of the FCS firmware will be that only one iSCSI target is available right now. For a mid-range SMB NAS, it is essential that multiple iSCSI targets be supported (particularly since LaCie claims the 5big NAS Pro is suitable for up to 50 users). Fortunately, we were assured that multiple iSCSI targets are definitely in the pipeline. Multiple application services such as Wuala (more on this in the next section), TimeMachine, DLNA server, iTunes, printer server, rsync backup and Download Machine (BitTorrent / HTTP) are available. Access protocols can be enabled on a per-share basis.

With Windows Backup Utility, on restoring file (backed up from separate LaCie Ethernet Disk) receive message: "Warning: The target file system does not support some [sic] the features of the original file system. Some data may not be restored as a result." Following through with restore causes restored file to display "Attributes" toggle on the first page as earlier versions of Windows file system. Needed to download newest version of LaCie Network Assistant to get drive running, but did not reformat drive. Drive is not found in Windows Device Manager due is network drive LAN attached. Bumping the transfer size up to 128k in our Enterprise Synthetic Workload we looked to saturate the networking connections for both iSCSI and SMB. Looking at the 128k performance of 100% write and 100% read activity, the LaCie 5big NAS Pro iSCSI measured at 112,960 KB/s read and 41,900 KB/s write, which were quite a bit lower than the 218,424 KB/s read and 149,365 KB/s write for SMB.

Like most network devices, the administration menu for the Network Space 2 opens in a browser window, bringing you to a dashboard screen with easy access to everything from user administration to settings and drive status. A strip of widgets around the outside edge make things even easier: Almost like with iGoogle, you can drag a frequently used category to this bar and get an overview of the options within. The Ecomanagement widget, for instance, will tell you if the light is on, and how many minutes it has been programmed to stay on for, while the Downloads widgets offers a glance at how many torrents you have cooking. ff782bc1db
