Last month KC updated to allow users to create both a kindle version AND an epub! Yay! But the software itself is clunky. It's like someone took 1995 and squished it into a disappointing experience.

What's that? Scrivener isn't set up to compile ebooks??? But wait, it says on their website it is, they definitely don't say 'if you have got to the stage of publishing an ebook then dear god don't try and use us!' In fact, Scrivener even has the option to create epub2, epub3, and mobi! Oh my! It would be rather strange for a piece of software to have these options and yet be found lacking.

If I open Microsoft word and open a folder window alongside then, like a sarky magic trick, I literally have created Scrivener before your very eyes. Look, you can name these folder chapter two and you put chapter two things in it!

Anyway, to the point now. I often have text threads in my ebooks. I like to left justify one person and right justify the other. I have achieved this with scrivener to the point it works on kindle previewer. But I've just opened my ebook on my phone and all that loverly justification is gone, fittingly taking any remaining justification for Scrivener with it.

While its fairly easy to add a web bookmark shortcut to the home screen on most android systems, there doesn't seem to be a way to do this on the amazon kindle fire. Usually chrome or firefox is used to create the link on other android systems, but the Silk web browser doesn't seem to have this capability. I don't think its possible to install chrome or firefox on a kindle fire out-of-the-box without doing some fancy editing.

Does Kindle Create automatically create a link to the beginning of the text? On the Preview tool on KDP my book opens with the cover. Will it open at the start of the book (after the contents etc) for anyone who purchases the book? I have searched online for an answer to this and can find no mention of this. I have published many ebooks in the past and used to put my own links in during formatting.

Kindle Collections are basically folders on your Kindle that help organize your content. There are three ways to create Kindle collections. One is on the device itself. One is using the desktop programs. And the third is using my favorite software organization program Calibre.

Gather your Kindle, a kindle cord, download Calibre, and the plugin. Hook up the Kindle to the computer, open Calibre, and install the plugin according to instructions here. Once you have installed the plugin, you will need to restart Calibre. You must have your Kindle connected to your computer to operate the plugin.

This is a particularly nice way to create collections for those who have existing collections. If you have existing collections on your Kindle, you can use the Calibre interface to organize your collections. First, however, create a custom column as you did above.

The preceding chapters of this book have covered the steps necessary to configure an environment suitable for the development of Kindle Fire based Android applications. Before moving on to slightly more advanced topics, now is a good time to validate that all of the required development packages are installed and functioning correctly. The best way to achieve this goal is to create a simple Android application, compile it and then run it within an Android Virtual Device (AVD) configured as a Kindle Fire emulator.

The first step in the application development process is to create a new project within the Eclipse IDE. Begin, therefore, by launching Eclipse and accepting the default path to your workspace in the Workspace Launcher dialog as illustrated in Figure 5-1 (or choose another location if the default is unsuitable). Note that if you do not wish to be prompted for the location of the workspace each time Eclipse loads, simply select the Use this as the default and do not ask again option before clicking on OK.

With the correct settings configured, click Next > to proceed to the Configure Project screen (Figure 5-3). Within this screen, a number of different configuration options are provided.Make sure that the Create Activity and Create customer launcher icon options are selected. The former setting will ensure that the project is preconfigured with a template activity that will make the task of creating an example application easier. An activity is a single task that can be performed by the user within the context of an application and is typically analogous to a single user interface screen within an application. In asking for Eclipse to create an activity for us, therefore, the project will be primed with both a window onto which a user interface may be displayed and the code to ensure that the window appears when the application runs.The custom launcher selection, on the other hand, will provide the option to specify the icon that will represent the application on the device screen.

Click Next > to proceed with the configuration process.Creating an ActivityThe next step is to define the type of initial activity that is to be created for the application. A range of different activity types is available when developing Android applications, though many of these are not available for the earlier version of Android used by the first generation Kindle Fire. For the purposes of this example, however, simply select the option to create a BlankActivity before clicking Next >.

With the Blank Activity option selected, click Next >. On the final screen (Figure 5 6) name the activity KindleTestActivity. The activity will consist of a single user interface screen layout which, for the purposes of this example, should be named activity_kindle_test. Finally, since this is a very simple, single screen activity, there is no need to select a navigation type, so leave this menu set to None (as with the activity options, these settings are not supported for the older release of Android on the first generation Kindle Fire).Finally, click on Finish to initiate the project creation process.

When the Amazon Appstore launched in March of this year following a lengthy, low-key test with developers, it was immediately evident that the company had an opportunity to challenge the official Android Market's dominance in a way that no one else had been able to do. First off, Amazon's constant visibility to consumers is through the roof.
