Just Shapes and Beats is a rhythm/bullet hell hybrid game with a simple premise yet unique and beautiful execution. Each player controls a shape that can dodge or dash through pink projectiles that come at you to the beat of the music. That's it: just shapes and beats.

The thing that makes this game so amazing is the elegant execution of this idea. The soundtrack is phenomenal (best video game soundtrack since Celeste imo), and the 35 total levels contain a huge variety of ideas with euphoric execution. Half the time I am tempted to just soak in the mesmerizing patterns appearing, flowing, and forming across the screen (rather than focus on dodging them).

The developers thought of everything and everyone with their game modes. There is a story mode with a very interactive overworld map between levels (think Super Mario 3's overworld but on steroids and with minor challenges just to get to the next level). The story mode is quite challenging at times, but with checkpoints along the way (or a more forgiving casual mode option--Funky Mode!) it never becomes frustrating. A challenge mode lets you play or compete for the best rankings. There is also a party mode where the levels play automatically and the shapes/beats offer eye/ear candy to your party guests who can pick up a controller and jump in at any time to enjoy the game with no risk of dying (the player who does best each song gets a crown for bragging rights).

From the overwhelming polish of the game to the smallest of pop culture nods and easter eggs within the levels (Super Mario, Pac-Man, 007, Mario Kart, etc.), Just Shapes and Beats is an absolute joy to play. It offers plenty of fun to every type of gamer (from hardcore to casual) all in a beautifully wrapped package of exotic shapes and foot-tapping beats. I consider it one of the best indies and best multiplayer games on the Switch (right up there with Celeste, Steamworld Dig 2, Overcooked, Thumper, etc.) and an absolute must try for anyone looking to put $20 toward solid Switch entertainment.

Me and my friends have started playing just shapes and beats (amazing game btw), but our only problem with the game was that their was no level editor. So I told my friends to each pick a song and I'd make a level for them! Heres one of them!

The title of the game truly represents the nature of what the game entails, namely shapes and beats. Through the story mode (which can be played with others locally), you navigate your rectangle through a maze of pink objects cluttering the screen, all in tune with the music. The visual style while simplistic is highly effective, evoking memories of Geometry Wars, which is an excellent company to be in. In fact, since you are dodging and dashing through the levels, it feels like attempting a pacifist mode run.

In this game, players move a colored shape to the beat of background music and dodge pink shapes.

Up to four players control one small shape each, represented by either a cyan square as player 1, a yellow triangle as player 2, a green pentagon as player 3 or an orange circle as player 4. Players dodge attacks in the form of various pink shapes, such as beams, bouncing waves, pulsating shapes, and bouncing circles. These attacks appear and move in rhythm to the music, with difficulty increasing the further players progress.[2]

Cyan is a kind individual, often excitable and hyper. However, this can also make him much easier to scare, as he is almost just as afraid of corruption as a normal shape. Nevertheless, he becomes more brave, confident and aware of his actions as the franchise progresses.

It uses a combination of official releases and game-ripped audio to deliver the highest quality possible while being as complete as possible. Songs with official releases were prioritized over the in-game audio due to higher quality, but songs exclusive to the game that have not been released officially were ripped from the game.

I must say, this OST is just amazing! Mainly because it's really big, but also these songs just fit so well into a gd level. Even though I can't use the songs, I can still imagine it, overall, 10/10 :D!!!

Yeah, this game is completely awesome. Parts of it kind of remind me of something else I played quite a while ago, but I can't remember what. I've been wracking my brain all morning! Maybe just one of the PixelJunks or parts of Everyday Shooter?

Even before I played it, Just Shapes & Beats had my heart racing. The four-man group ahead of me in line was just moments away from surviving the final level. Everyone was dead, save for one yellow triangle that dashed frantically around a screen packed full of attacking pink hazards.

Powers and Abilities: Impeccable sense of rhythm, Broadway Force, Small Size (Type 1), Immortality (Type 2; Getting hit chips off 1/3 of its body, meaning the Blue Square can survive at 1/3 its original size), Levitation, Matter Manipulation (Shrunk The Boss's crown to fit itself), Regeneration (High-Mid, possibly Low-High; Although the game-over screen shows the Blue Square regenerating from large shards, within the level, the player is reduced to miniscule fragments) and Time Manipulation (Sends the Blue Square back to the most recently obtained checkpoint, unless one is not available, at which the level is reset), Invulnerability with Dash (Allows Blue Square to dash through incoming attacks, Resistance to Corruption (Touched the corrupted water without any negative effects, when other entities, such as a mushroom or =2542 Plant], touching the water instantly corrupted them), Triangles possess Creation, Teleportation (Carries Blue Square in and out of levels), Deconstruction (Broke the seals containing the pieces of The Boat), limited Technology Manipulation (Could close a water pump), Purification (Type 2; Can reverse The Boss' corruption, and Resurrection (Big Square's cat ears, which are just two Triangles, were used to resurrect Blue Square after they gave up) The Boat has Acrobatics (shown here), The Helicopter has Flight | All abilities previously possessed, Invulnerability, Light Manipulation (Attacks with rainbows) e24fc04721
