A Chicago native, Lankford was elected in 1984 to Fulton County sheriff and was successfully reelected in 1988, but his second term was cut short when he was sentenced to three years in prison for extortion and tax evasion, according to a 1990 Associated Press article. Jacquelyn Barrett was appointed as his successor. She became the first Black woman in the country elected to a sheriff's position in 1992.
Under Georgia law, there are requirements a person must meet before they run for sheriff in their respective counties. Among the requirements: being a U.S. citizen who is at least 25 years old; having resided in their county for at least two years immediately preceding the date of qualifying; be a registered voter; possess a high school diploma or an equivalent as defined by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council; and, no felony record.
