"Assets" are an internal iOS mechanism to download data on demand. It's not available for third-party apps; it's only used by Apple. mobileassetd is the daemon in charge of managing and downloading assets when other apps ask for them.

every time I create new Playgrounds I can hear a loud noise from my MacBook Pro fans. I can see in Activity Monitor that mobileassetd process is taking about 75-80% CPU power. It happens basically all the time. Sometimes is happens just because I opened Simulator.

For me this happened right after updating to Xcode 11.2 (11B52). It started using 100% CPU, which remained even after restarting my MacBook Pro 2018. Force-quitting Xcode several times, helped, then it happened again on the next day. I'm using a Swift projet with Storyboard.

I have the exact same problem, the process is mobileassetd and starts when any playground file is opened, takes 70-80 or more % CPU and the fans go crazy. Playground is also incredibly slow (takes 10s to run a print statement).

Also, starting with iOS 8, if the user brings your app to the front then iOS will automatically give tasks a 'kick'. I've forgotten the exact mechanics of this but I'm pretty sure it's covered in WWDC 2014 Session 707 What's New in Foundation Networking.

Please don't do this. Having multiple sessions make sense if the items are logically distinct, but having multiple sessions just to bypass some restriction in the OS is just starting an arms race that you're not going to win.

The trigger for this came from a query raised by part of QuickLook, which apparently needed some help handling a RAW camera image among those being viewed.

I could not see the error you mentioned but tried the process anyway and the following is the log starting from around the point of clicking on the downloading app icon and deleting it (because it fails to download the app) and then trying to download the app.

After fetching the download URL, the process nsurlsessiond is responsible for downloading the UpdateBrainService to a temporary directory. At the same time, the com.apple.StreamingUnzipService decompresses it to the same temporary location. Next, the mobileassetd process moves the decompressed contents to the trusted location, /System/Library/AssetsV2/com_apple_MobileAsset_MobileSoftwareUpdate_MacUpdateBrain/. Finally, before the launchd process spawns the UpdateBrainService, the xpc service bundle will be copied to its staging path.

Therefore, there is a time window to modify the contents before the mobileassetd process moves to the final trusted location. As a result, the content of the OTA package in the trusted location is not trustworthy and needs to be verified.

The payload.bom file located in the trusted location cannot be modified directly, but we can replace it with a symbolic link before the mobileassetd process moves the OTA package. Therefore, the payload.bom file can be modified at any time by using the symbolic link. 2351a5e196
