I appreciate this might have been done to make an easier drop target when dragging items to it, but it makes the menu bar look ugly, and takes up precious space on smaller screens. Could it be switched to a more standard spacing, maybe as a separate option?

I used to be a Basic member but am now a member of a Family Plan. I am not able to get the Dropbox icon on my menu bar on a new Mac - Monterey 12.01. I have quit and trashed the application and have reinstalled a couple of times, but nothing. I can't for the life of me get the icon on my Menu Bar. Does the Menu Bar have a space limitation? I would think not. Any help out there?

Jay - thanks for getting back to me. So I found out that we are limited to the number of icons in the Menu Bar. I deleted one that I did not need and then the Dropbox icon showed up. So it turned out to be just a space issue on the Menu Bar. I am now all good.

Since upgrading from Mac OS Mojave on an old MacBook to Monterey on a new MacBook Pro 14, the Dropbox icon no longer appears on my menu bar. I re-downloaded and installed the Dropbox desktop app. That didn't help. And when I try to open the Dropbox app, either from my Applications folder or from the Control Panel, it only opens my Dropbox folder of all my files.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies. As @skiblues mentioned, I also learned that Monterey allows only a limited number of icons on the menu bar. I just updated to the latest Monterey (Version 12.3) and the issue is the same.

I did discover what I thought was another option: If you open a Finder window, under the View dropdown menu, you'll see "Customize Toolbar...". That opens a window that gives you the variety of icons, including Dropbox, that you can simply drag to the toolbar... not the top toolbar, but the toolbar of the Finder windows. That looked promising, but unfortunately, clicking on that icon only opens my local Dropbox folder, not the former desktop app that included the link to my Dropbox files on the web.

Since the new MacBook Pros (I have a 2021, running OS Monterey) have limited room on the menu bar, I thought maybe if I took of some apps that I don't really need, it would allow room for ones I do -- like Dropbox.

But... it still wasn't enough. One icon up there puzzled me: One that looks like an old telephone handset, called "Modem". I have no modem hardware or software connected, so it had no use. But that Modem was not listed in the "Dock & Menu Bar" settings. So... how to get rid of it?

I'm a paying customer of the 3TB tier of Dropbox. I have been going back and forth with Dropbox support for nearly a month, and they are unable to get my Dropbox icon back in my menu bar. It's exasperating. I have a ton of free menu-bar space.

If you just wanted to change certain properties with the icon that is there (i.e. color, size, add a border, etc), then all you need to do is add a class and play around with the CSS in the Typography section.

All of the sudden, the dropbox icon has disappeared from my mac menu bar. It happened a few weeks ago, but I see that everything would synch up by seeing the green check mark appear. But today, some files don't seem to synch up as it shows the little blue circle. So I am not sure what is going on.

I have the same problem (icon is missing from Mac menu bar). Actually it intermittently appears (though rarely), but has been missing more 90% of the time last few months. I forced quit through Activity monitor (as otherwise couldn't delete because of "open" error message previously referred to). I then deleted the app (from Finder> Applications), and re-installed. But still no Dropbox icon in menu bar!

During one of those moments when the icon briefly appeared last week in the menu bar, I was able to get info on Dropbox version by clicking on the icon,c and took a screenshot. It was "v184.3.6480", with a tab on the bottom "leave Beta", which I must've signed for before. Again, I a assume that delete/redownload today may have updated or changed that, but not sure how to identify current DB version without access to the icon in the menu bar.

Since Columbus Day, a few of our users are not syncing files and the DropBox Icon is completely missing from current running operations. Being in accounting, we work in dropbox desktop daily and share invoices. Without being able to see what the other user is doing, we can lose invoices and our vendors won't get paid. I've reached out to the DropBox team and got one response this morning but no follow ups and we really need help. I've tried following the steps and try to download dropbox but it still doesn't display the icon.

Question: How can I make sure that once the icon is hovered, a clickable element appears on the right side, next to the icon? Just like how the bubble tool box is placed next to the icons on the sidebar menu.

More details about that on the following post:

Can the icons in the Top Bar be Font Awesome Light version? Support Hi @core365, Thank you for writing in, please follow the same method provided here. The data-x-icon- you need to use is data-x-icon-o for outline. As of Font Awesome version 5 they split icons into multiple fonts. This can be fixed by changing instances of the data-x-icon attribute to one of the following: data-x-icon-b for social icons. data-x-icon-o for outline icons. data-x-icon-s for solid icons. Hope this helps, Cheers!

After upgrading to 8, the menu bar icon did not appear (the 8 icon, not the old 7 one, and yes I checked preferences to ensure it was enabled). So I rebooted, and it appeared, but then went away again. So I launched 1Password, and it appeared, but then when I quit, it disappeared, and now won't return, even after launching 1Password. Any suggestions?

Then try to close the main window by clicking on the red close icon in the upper left corner of the window. Does the 1Password icon stay in the menubar? If it doesn't then I'd like to ask you to create a diagnostics report from your Mac:

@Dave_1P I had tried unchecking, and then re-checking, the "Keep 1Password in the menu bar" option, to no avail. However, it turns out the issue was lack of space in the menu bar, which surprised me for two reasons:

I use Bartender to shift some items out of the menu bar. You might want to consider something like that if space is a concern. There may be other apps that can do this, but it is the one I use on my devices. I appreciate you letting us know this was resolved.

@ag_tommy I had some items in both the control center and separately in the menu bar (Wifi, battery, etc.). I just confined them to the control center only, which functions as a built in Bartender, of sorts.

Please add a setting that allow us to remove the Evernote icon from the Mac OS menu bar. Space there is extremely limited and I find no use for it... I can just alt-tab to Evernote whenever I need to.

Yep - I agree, but that doesn't always work out 100% in practice. I believe I have several other apps that don't have a setting to disable the menu bar item either. Perhaps an Evernote setting for it will be one of the new settings hinted at in this thread (but I'm not holding my breath).

There is a pretty long thread somewhere in this forum with a discussion around this. Some suggestions in there are for using some kind of third-party menu bar organizer (like Bartender) to hide the Evernote icon (and other icons). I used to use Bartender and it is pretty great. Here is an open-source/free one too that I have heard about but haven't tried: The benefit of using something like this is that it will work for Evernote and for a lot of the other apps that you use that also don't have a preference to hide the menu bar icon.

I am tring to create an icon for menu in IC6. Problem is, when I import the png file the icon comes as too small. The icon I have is of 361 X 233 pixels. I am using hiLoadIconFile( ".PNG" 48 8 ). But the size seems to have no change with respect to width & hight.

List representing an icon menu item. The icon occupies the icon area on the left of the menu item, and the text (specified in t_menuItemText) is displayed alongside. Menu icons can only be 16x16 pixels in size. If the icon is larger than 16x16 pixels, it will be shrunk (which is why only 16x16 icons are recommended for the menu items). See Specifying Icons for hi Functions in Chapter 7 for information about how to specify an icon as an argument.

What I want to do is to hide the icon in the menu bar through JAMF. There is a check box in network prefs "Show wifi status in menu bar" that if unchecked hides it. I tried doing a snapshot with composer but that didn't work out.

So, the plist that governs whether or not the Wi-Fi icon displays is located here: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist. I've spent a little time trying to modify it with defaults write, and it's proving to be a little difficult to remove that specific AirPort menu icon. Defaults doesn't do the best job with deleting from array indexes. Easiest way forward for this would either be to remove the /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/AirPort.menu string manually from the plist (through Property List Editor or another GUI plist editor) and then either capture and deploy it to all existing users and user templates via Composer, or you can turn it into a Custom Payload by customizing the plist and then uploading it to the JSS and deploying it from there as a Config Profile.

FWIW, PlistBuddy can remove entries from the array in that plist, but the problem is, you need to use an index value to remove it, rather than a string, I believe, which means you need to figure out which index the entry for the Wifi menu icon would be in the array first. If, for example, its the 4th item in the array, you'd use 3 (since arrays start at 0)
