Such a blessing to find this tune with the words online. Over 50 years ago it was a favorite in simple acoustic home fellowship worship and has lifted me up to Him over all the years. Others were "Great is the Lord and Greatly to be Praised" and "I can run through a troop".

Liturgical Use:

Beginning of worship and other points of praise in worship; baptisms (especially easy for children to learn); after confession of sin and reassurance of forgiveness, when worshipers will want to praise God for his mercy. See also PHH 89.

Lennon was later dismissive of "And Your Bird Can Sing", referring to it as "another of my throwaways ... fancy paper around an empty box".[4] The song's working title was "You Don't Get Me". Its oblique lyrics, and Lennon's failure to reveal their meaning, have encouraged several interpretations. One popular theory is that Lennon was addressing Frank Sinatra in response to a hagiographic article on the singer in Esquire magazine; another contends that the song was directed at Mick Jagger with reference to Marianne Faithfull.

The Beatles first recorded the track in the style of the Byrds. This discarded version was released on the 1996 outtakes compilation Anthology 2 and includes the sound of Lennon and McCartney laughing their way through a vocal overdub and unable to sing. This version of the song was included (without the laughing overdub) on the second disc of the 2022 Super Deluxe Edition of Revolver.

Aside from dismissing it as a substandard work, John Lennon never discussed "And Your Bird Can Sing".[5] His first wife Cynthia recalled that the song was inspired by her presenting Lennon with a clockwork bird inside a gilded cage, wrapped in gift paper, apart from the wind-up mechanism. She wound up the bird as she handed the present to Lennon so that it sang, leaving him with "an expression of sheer disbelief on his face" as he removed the wrapping paper. According to author Kenneth Womack, Lennon viewed the caged imitation bird as a metaphor for his marriage and a reflection of Cynthia's inability to understand him.[6] The song's working title was "You Don't Get Me".[7]

Singer Marianne Faithfull said the song was addressed to Mick Jagger and written about her, since she was Jagger's girlfriend (or "bird" in English slang) at the time.[5] This interpretation was proposed by journalist Richard Simpson,[7] and others have cited it as an example of the perceived rivalry between the Beatles and Jagger's band, the Rolling Stones.[10] According to Beatles biographer Steve Turner, Faithfull's interpretation is incorrect, since she was not in a relationship with Jagger until later in 1966.[5] Some writers have speculated that Lennon's lyrics were directed at Paul McCartney.[8] According to Rolling Stone, and supported by Womack, the line "You say you've seen seven wonders" could be a reference to a comment McCartney made in 1964 when the Beatles were smoking cannabis with Bob Dylan in New York.[16][17] Under the effects of the drug, McCartney declared that he knew the answer to the questions of existence and told Beatles roadie Mal Evans to write down any statements he made on the subject. McCartney was later dismayed to discover that, rather than the ingenious declarations he recalled, his realisations amounted to the phrase "There are seven levels."[17]

The Beatles first recorded the song on 20 April 1966[24] at EMI Studios (subsequently Abbey Road Studios) in London.[25] The arrangement was markedly similar to the Byrds' sound;[26] it featured lush vocal harmonies and jangle-style guitars,[27] with Harrison playing his Rickenbacker 360/12 electric guitar.[16][28] While carrying out vocal overdubs on the track, Lennon and McCartney were overcome by hysterical laughter and unable to sing their parts.[7][29] Later released on the 1996 Anthology 2 outtakes compilation album, the performance includes the pair giggling, uttering spoken asides, and whistling along with the melody.[28] In his liner notes for the album, Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn comments that the tapes do not indicate the source of the laughter.[30][nb 3]

The Beatles did not perform any of the songs from Revolver during their August 1966 US tour.[52] While acknowledging that several of the tracks would have been impossible to reproduce in concert, Unterberger says that guitar-based songs such as "And Your Bird Can Sing" would have been easy to arrange for live performance. He views its omission as indicative of the band's mindset that touring had become a futile exercise, but rues that they did not seek to regain enthusiasm by playing recent material that would have suited their stage act.[53] Recalling the album's release in his 1977 book The Beatles Forever, Nicholas Schaffner commented that whereas the group's more traditional fans warmed to McCartney's new songs, "Lennon's numbers were a different kettle of fish entirely" due to their oblique lyrics. While he also viewed the music of "And Your Bird Can Sing" as a natural choice for live performance, relative to the more complex recordings on Revolver, he added:

But what was/is one to make of lines like "You say you've seen seven wonders / And your bird is green / But you don't see me ...?" Perhaps John was still under the influence of Bob Dylan, who at the time seemed to take pleasure in confounding dissectors of his "message" with cryptic lyrics that made no sense at all.[54]

Then we'll sing one song of the poor and ragged tramp,

He carries his home on his back;

Too old to work, he's not wanted round the camp,

So he wanders without aim along the track.

(CHORUS:)

Organize, O toilers, come organize your might;

Then we'll sing one song of the workers' commonwealth

Full of beauty, full of love and health.

Then we'll sing one song of the one big union grand,

The hope of the toiler and the slave;

It's coming fast; it is sweeping sea and land,

to the terror of the grafter and the knave.

Let us wake at the morning and be filled with Your love,

and sing songs of praise all our days,

for Your love is as high as the heavens above us,

and Your faithfulness as certain as the dawn!

Hi guys, I'm new around here. I wanted to ask a question which I've been thinking of lately. I'm almost 20, and taking voice lessons for 2 months. I can sing effortlessly g#2 - d#4, but from d#4 to g4, I start to feel a little strain. I can practice that area with a ("Aaah") vowel, my mouth open, but when it comes to singing anything other than "a" or "e", I immediately break. Also i think it is impossible to sing with your mouth wide open, so what's the point of practicing it like that? It might be a lame question, pardon the noob.

The song plays after King Triton lifts the ban on music and everyone rejoices, celebrating that music has at last returned to the kingdom of Atlantica and it's the beginning of a new start for everyone.

To me this song seems like he's totally into this girl but he realizes the relationship might not be working. He is insecure about the relationship/feels the end is coming but things arent what they used to be (stories of the greater years). He wants to hang onto this relationship and those memories forever but he acknowledges things arent working and doesn't want her to stick around just so she doesnt hurt him. He is basically admitting he would be there for her forever so if she wants to be done with it, shes gonna have to do it, not him, he will continue to love and sing to her of greater things for all of time.

Is it actually the word tears and not the word beer. I have seen it written both ways. Beer doesn't make too much sense (unless you use the beer to drown your past). Fear works, but I haven't seen that used by any lyrics places. Most the lyrics places I have seen have it written beer and then tears is written in parenthesis. Anyone got any insight on this at all?

He's peculiarly intelligent, the best kind of journalist, fair to the artist without failing to entertain the reader." --Erykah Badu "Miles Marshall Lewis is one of the cornerstone writers of his generation, a pioneering voice whose insights into American culture - particularly that outsize portion of it pertaining to black music - have been critical not only to his readers but also the writers who have emerged in his two decades of public engagement.
