AI is not all just hype. Real capital is being put to work. A number of large tech companies have already followed the interest with investments, announcing multi-year commitments to this type of generative AI. In the venture space, we have seen a steady rise in funding and deals in generative AI in recent years and we can expect this to increase further with time. Sure, there has been plenty of skepticism over unprofitable innovation from the last couple of years - things like crypto and the metaverse - but in contrast, the fundamental efficiency and productivity benefits of AI appear to be quite apparent already.

As for investment opportunities, many (if not most) of the fast-growing disruptors are early-stage companies. This means private investing, where AI could be a key source of growth for venture investors in the coming years. In public markets, we identify 3 sectors which could benefit: 1) Semiconductor companies with strong AI and data center footprints are the most direct beneficiaries. While the hype in the top GPU producer may continue, growing demand could benefit other suppliers too. We also expect foundry, memory and semi equipment makers with a portfolio geared towards high performance computing to benefit from rising demand. 2) Large hyperscalers that provide cloud services could benefit thanks to exponentially growing calculations taking place in data centers. 3) Software firms which are increasingly embracing and incorporating AI in their work practices and products, which could bring new revenue opportunities. While many stocks have recently surged, we prefer to add on pullbacks or participate via structured products with downside protection. We also note that software is a clear laggard and could offer attractive catch-up opportunities.
