A Virtual Violin produces the sound of a traditional Violin. The Virtual Violin can be played through a computer, tablet or mobile without the physical instrument. The violin is a small stringed instrument with a hollow body that is most commonly made of wood. The four strings of a violin are played using a stringed bow. Violins are made up of different sections of wood, often from different types of trees depending on the qualities desired. Traditionally, violin strings were made of catgut but they are often made of synthetic materials today. The term fiddle is interchangeable with the name violin and both refer to the same instrument. The bridge of a violin is very specific. It is cut in a particular shape and is always made of maple. The bridge is important as its curve helps to hold the strings taught and it also transfers the vibration of the strings into the main violin cavity.

The format of the bow was streamlined in the late 18th century and has remained mostly unchanged since then. All stringed instruments are thought to derive from the Ancient Greek Lyre, a small stringed instrument that was plucked using a pick. The earliest stringed instrument played with a bow is thought to have been an Arabic rebab. From which, the violin is thought to have derived from. Stradivarius, Guarnerius and Maggini and considered to be some of the greatest violin builders. Instruments made by these Italian families are the most highly prized. Their ability to deliver a superior sound quality has been scientifically researched and examined, though no one particular characteristic has been identified.

A violin always has two distinctive cut-out holes on either side of the body in the shape of a long 's.' These holes known as f-holes, help to project sound and are found on many other stringed instruments. The E string of every violin is the thinnest and the most delicate. In the 1920s the E string of many modern violins was made using steel, instead of the traditional gut material. This was due to the lack of availability of gut after the war and the greater durability of steel. Violins play an important role in classical music. They have also been widely used in jazz and folk music. Electric violins were introduced in the 1940s and often feature in contemporary rock and pop music.

The instrument is trapped between the chin and the shoulder to stabilize it. The chinrest was developed in the nineteenth century to support the instrument, and this played a major role in improving playing techniques. Initially, the violin appears to have been held against the chest or the shoulder.

The neck is held lightly around the thick of the thumb and the base of the index finger. The strings are pressed down by the other four fingers. Unlike the guitar, the violin does not have any frets, so if the angle at which the finger meets the string is even slightly off, the finger will slip.

June 16, 2015 at 06:53 AMĀ  I've enjoyed classical music my whole life (currently 18 years old) with the Violin being my personal favorite. I've always wanted to play, but I thought it would just be too much of a luxury/cost too much/I would be too busy. Last year, I was told by the doctors that I wouldn't be able to do anything. Basically I can only sit up for about an hour before I have to lay down the rest of the day due to pain, and I cannot fix it because of the risks. So I am bed bound for life. That's when it finally hit me. Maybe I have a chance in recreational violin?

Before I even consider this, I wanted to learn a bit, especially in my case, if it's even possible. So my question is: Is is possible to play the Violin whilst laying down? With my conditions, I can indeed sit up for about an hour, but one hour of practice every 5 or so, doesn't sound very efficient.

June 16, 2015 at 12:48 PMĀ  Yes you can. I remember from my school days there was a gifted pupil (very much not me), of whom my teacher said "I knew he had something special when the first thing he did on recovering from a severe illness (and this was before getting out of bed) was to ask for his violin".

June 16, 2015 at 01:02 PMĀ  Dear Tim, you've humbled us all by even asking this question. We complain among one another about the great difficulties that the violin poses without having to imagine facing those issues whilst bedridden. My guess is that you're not the first to have faced this problem, though, and as Buri suggested it would be good for you to find someone who has figured it out already. I don't know anyone myself but the violin is so popular that it's hard to imagine any violin-related problem being truly unique. I've tried to play lying down (not seriously), and the most obvious difficulties are that overall body/arm movement is restricted in ways that one does not encounter whilst sitting or standing, and that the bow is not maintained on the string by gravity, rather it tries to skitter off toward the bridge.

June 16, 2015 at 01:08 PMĀ  If fatigue and pain are concerns then I would think trying to play lying down will be quite a challenge. Think trying to hold a book up with both hands - it gets really tiring. So some modification to your positioning with the instrument - perhaps a little viola de gamba style going down the body or even cello style. If you can be semi reclined and well supported that should also help - you need to be able to move your bow arm at least some distance by swinging your elbow preferably. There are various devices that are designed to support the violin in a harness to protect the neck joints/muscles - perhaps one might be helpful for you? One I can think of is happy necks.

Be aware that most violin starters complain of some discomfort as it is not an ergonomic instrument. So your 1 hour of sitting every few hours may be perfect as most people should probably only practise about 30 minutes at a time initially anyway. Short but frequent and regular will get you a long way.

as a teacher of advanced players primarily through telepathy I can tell you she was teaching the student to be aware of on coming trucks when lying down in the road and playing the violin. Vertical busking has always been safer than horizontal. And those Autobahns are bloody fast....

June 17, 2015 at 04:38 PMĀ  Tim, you've got us all trying it. :) I've actually tried playing violin lying down before. I just did again and found playing cello lying down much easier! (Violin is my main instrument.) If you can have something big resting on top of you without pain, cello could be an option. My cello weighs 7 pounds. It is heavy enough that it doesn't skitter around when bowed like my violin did in the various positions I experimented with.

The violin is one of the most rewarding and beautiful instruments to play. The road to learning the violin is a long one, but with patience, discipline, and enthusiasm, these steps will help you start down the road to success with this storied instrument.

What Our Expert Does: "With my students, I usually recommend for parents to rent a violin until their child reaches their full size. If you buy a violin for a small child, you'll have to replace it every year or so as long as the child is growing, which can become very expensive very fast."

Good flick, and the music is very good. It includes two performances of the prelude to the first Bach Suite(Yo Yo Ma) Several chunks of the Corelli Christmas Concerto, and some very nice cello/violin duets that were apparently composed just for the movie, BUT

OH NO!!! Next youll be telling me that he isnt a sailor either!Or that Arnold isnt a machine! That Keanu Reeves cant really fly through the air and fight like that!OH MY GOD!! Can it be? Is it possible that Bugs Bunny IS just a cartoon and cant really play the piano at all?NOOOOOO!!!!World is crumbling!!!Spiraling down into depression!Everything is going black!I want my mommy!Maybe I'm not,FiddlinJim

In the books Capt. Jack Aubrey wasn't much of a fiddler (despite owning an Amati at one point, I think) but I agree, when it's obvious that an actor can't play, it makes it hard for me to suspend my disbelief! Too bad they couldn't have used some of their computer enhanced special effects to fix that! -Steve

I was just grateful that they HAD people playing chamber music in it -- and that they used REAL "classical" music in the soundtrack! Think of the people who have never heard Corelli, Boccherini, Vaughn-Williams, Mozart, or Bach, who will hear it -- and maybe be more receptive to symphonic music as a result. I'd prefer to see someone fake it better, but it doesn't bother me or ruin it for me. One review I read said that the two actors learned to play several tunes in their entirety (not that anyone would want to hear them ).

Have you seen the picture in teh Shar catalog of the young person holding violin/bow. Now I DO take offense to THAT. They are a music company for crying out loud, and they opt to put a cutesy pic of some cherub TRYING to hold a bow. That is not even close to being funny.

llama, Richard Tognetti is the artistic director/leader of the Australian CHAMBER Orchestra. Fantastic violinist, who played a duet with an Scottish accordianist at the opening ceremony of the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

How about "The Pianist"? Adrian Brody playing Chopin without mistakes having not touched a piano in 5 years!!! Awful!! Next let's have a character with a broken leg, lay up for a few months, then jump out of bed one morning and run a marathon! 2351a5e196
