I know this is a very old thread, but this could be useful to someone.It's a horrible (outdated) hack using powershell and relies on sending a keyboard shortcut (look under hotspot shield's settings -> shortcuts).

Unfortunately, probably not. The reason being, Hotspot Shield, as I understand it, operates by connecting your PC to the websites you visit via a proxy. This means that when you visit these websites, your computer is connecting through Hotspot Shield's servers instead of directly connecting to the websites themselves, and because of this, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware's malicious website blocking component has no way of knowing the true IP addresses of the websites you're viewing, thus they will not be blocked.

Basically, the only way for malicious websites to be blocked by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware when using a proxy software, like Hotspot Shield, would be for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO to be installed and running on the actual proxy server itself that you're connecting to (the server that belongs to AnchorFree, the company that created Hotspot Shield).

I'm on Windows 8.1 and Firefox 99.Since we can't connect to most sites from inside Iran we have to use a VPN. I've hadn't this problem until recently just after the latest updated of Hotspot Shield (HSS). After that Whenever I connect HSS and open any site on Firefox it causes the CPU usage rise from under 5% to 100%.Here's some diagnostics and workarounds

It's a security product. Let me share: I've come to realize that the hotspots (places that offer free WiFi like McDonalds, Hotels, etc) I've had to use provide only UNSECURED connections, even those requiring a provided username/password. Hotspot Shield connects you through their US based VPN server for free from anywhere in the world (do use an adblocker and deselect all the crap you don't want when installing). It will slow things down but it encrypts everything you do online keeping you safe from those with a little know-how from stealing your credit card info, passwords, etc.

Hotspot is just somebody letting you use their internet via a wireless router as opposed to, what I hope you do at home, password protecting your wifi via a key or passcode. that key or passcode becomes the private handshake of encryption that most of these free hopspots aren't using.

fwiw, it appears that hotspot shield keeps some processes running even after you shut it off and exit from the little systray icon. Could that be why CCleaner doesn't wipe it completely, because the processes are active?

This whole topic of Unsecured Hotspots came about because I happened to take my laptop with me on a recent vacation. I never knew they were most all unsecured. I had to scramble for a solution just so I could check my non-https web based e-mail. And, it appears that OpenVPN is the best solution. Fortunately, it's offered as a free service but, like most all stuff I've used for free, it won't be long before the good ones will start charging. But, hopefully not.

I've found, to me, the easiest way to stop Hotspot Shield from starting, short of uninstalling it, is to use WinPatrol to disable the four Hotspot Shield services seen in the image below. It stops it dead, 100%, on startup, and I'm a regular user of WinPatrol anyway.

Hi Jerry White, I am using Fortigate 800C and blocked all proxy's (Hotspot shield, dot vpn and all other vpn's) but still people are able to access Hotspot Shield (may be new version Hotspot Shield Elite[in system]) and dot vpn (in chrome). can u help me.

1. You have to enable full SSL on whatever group you are working with. Which means you also have to deploy a valid certificate so users won't get invalid certificate errors. 2. In your working web filter group go ahead and block under Potentially Liable, Proxy Avoidance. Also under Security Risk, I block everything. 3. Under Advanced, Web Rating Overides I have a group called blocked websites. I added *.hotspotshield.* to this list. This just takes care of them accessing the site and will deter most of the clients anyway. Go back into your web filter group under local categories, and you should see your group you created with *.hotspotshield.*. Click on this and say block. Then move on to Application control where most of the magic happens. Go to your group you want to block and block proxy under categories. I also block botnet, p2p, and games in this group. You may also add hotspotshield to the application overrides but this is not necessary. Hope this helps.

I can no longer use my VPN - Hotspot Shield while Kaspersky is running. I have added the Program Files folder to the Kaspersky Exclusion List; but still am encountering a "Cannot connect" issue. Incidentally; I also had issues with Kaspersky and JDownloader; which somehow resolved itself once I uninstalled/reinstalled Jdownloader.

Following Flood/Igor's solution from start to finish - I am pleasantly able to report that I can now run Kaspersky, with Hotspot running! A bonus is I'm also able to use Jdownloader without any interference as well. Tremendous help here! I never would have figured that out by myself.
