I do not know if it is a feature or an issue. Maybe I am not seeing this situation as I should. My problem is that I have Hangouts on my Mac at home with Chrome Extension (Mac OS X 10.10), at my office PC with Chrome Extension (Elementary OS (Ubuntu based)) and in my phone (iPhone 5 with iOS 8.1.3); and everytime someone writes me on Hangouts I receive the notification on these 3 devices. I find a bit annoying that when I am at the office chatting on Hangouts, my phone keeps ringing/vibrating because of notifications. Plus, at home anyone using the Mac can see the notifications and the conversation.

The problem I am having is specifically when I join with my VoIP phones to Google Meet/Hangouts conferences. We use Google Meet for all of our video/audio calls in our meetings, and most of the time we use our computers to join the conference calls. There is a significant percentage of people though that join from their desk phones.

When you are having trouble, do calls from a deskphone to a non-Hangouts number have a quality issue in either direction? If so, do calls between two deskphones (passing through the cloud PBX but not the trunking provider) have poor quality?

When calling deskphone to deskphone everything is fine. Also when calling to cell phones and other numbers everything is fine. I have a few recruiters on the same VLAN that pretty much call other people all day long and they never report these kinds of problems.

The call went for 90min and there was no single problem with the call. Not an even one second choppy or wired noises. I am starting to think it might be related to the desk phone. Or just a bad moment with our ISP? This is pretty wired.

@mk7z, for trackers and ads blocked you have it set to aggressive. That is not default. Can you go to gmail/hangouts and set it to standard.

Has anyone been able to change the default notification sound for Hangouts Chat on Android? I get a ton of notifications on my phone from all kinds of services. I change the sound so I can easily tell which times I really need to check my phone. I've done this with Hangouts in the past, even with two different accounts. Now that we've migrated to Hangouts Chat, I still cannot find how to set a custom notification sound.

Jmp.chat is a service that has more batteries included. It provides a gateway to connect phone numbers to SIP for voice and XMPP for texts and media. I like this model as it lets me bring my own self-hosted XMPP server and SIP software or hardware devices. I started by using a number provider by jmp.chat and testing it against my own XMPP server. Once I was satisfied that text, media and voice worked as expected, I ported both of my phone numbers from Google Voice.

Most stock Android phone dialer applications support VoIP phone numbers via SIP. On my Sony Phone, these options can be found under Settings > Calls > Calling Accounts. Here I can add SIP accounts, and setup my device to ask which phone number I want to use for each call. The UI also indicates if the SIP connection is working correctly to receive calls. In the following screen shots, you can see how one of my SIP accounts is setup correctly and one indicates it cannot authenticate (in this case, due to using the wrong password).

There are many hardware devices that support multiple SIP accounts as well. Sometimes these can be found on eBay from businesses who are getting rid of old hardware, allowing you to setup a physical VoIP phone in addition to software phones and mobile devices.

Several years ago I stopped using Google Calendar and Contacts. I migrated to Radicale, an open source CardDav/CalDav server that I host myself. This puts me in full control of my contacts and schedule without relying on services from Google, Apple or others. On my Android device, I disable Google syncing and instead, I use DAVx5 to synchronize calendars and contacts to Radicale. This works fine for linking contacts to incoming or outgoing SIP calls, but for SMS, I need to sync my CardDav contacts with my XMPP roster. That way I can see all my contacts using the open source XMPP client Conversations on my phone.

I was using my Hotmail account for a very long time for hangouts and other Google services. Today I create a Gmail account on top of my existing Hotmail Google services. This is supposed to mean that the Google email is now the primary way to access all of that information. I did it and as soon as I did that, I couldn't log into Hangouts on my Nexus 5. Hangouts launched in 2010 and it includes chat, phone call, and video call capabilities. Any Google user can access Hangouts for free. With that information I decided to try placing a hangouts call from my PC on the LAN to my wife's cell phone. It sat there saying "connecting..." but her phone never rang, nothing came through, and again, no blocked traffic in the various logs. Googling for Sophos and Hangouts led me to these two links:

One last test that only further confuses the issue is that in this configuration with the intercoms not seeing each other, I *was* able to make a hangouts call from my desktop PC (on VLAN 1) to my cell-phone on WiFi (VLAN 40). Voice and video from the phone were received by the PC, and the PC has no mic or camera so I couldn't tell if voice and video could make it back, but I have to assume it would have. So if Google Hangouts works and the intercoms do not I might be chasing a wild goose...? I will contact the intercom company again today and see if they have any additional suggestions. And of course, suggestions from the forums here are most appreciated as well.

There seems to be no way to edit my previous post, so I'll reply to myself instead. I did some further testing with Hangouts and found that *only* video calls work. If I try to initiate an audio call to either my phone or my wife's phone it hangs and times out, without the phone ever ringing. When I do a video call, I get the previously described behavior, I'm able to accept the call and have full audio & video. ff782bc1db
