Expected: Under Ubuntu 11.10 I could just run gtkterm and select the "/dev" device as a standard user.

Probelm : Gtkterm is not able to open the /dev devices. You have to open a shell and type "sudo gtkterm" to get it to work.

Same: Last week I switched to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit. Now my user can't access the serial ports. It affects not just gtkterm but other serial port programs as well. I didn't see this in prior Ubuntu versions. Adding my user to the dialout group made no difference. For now, I am running "sudo gtkterm" to get around

The serial port communication programs moserial or gtkterm provide an easy way to check connectivity and modify /dev/ttyUSB0 (or /dev/ttyUSB1!) settings. Even though there maybe only a single USB to RS232 adapter, the n designation /dev/ttyUSBn can and does change periodically! Both moserial and gtkterm will show what port designation is relevant in their respective pull down menus when selecting an appropriate port to use.

I have a iRobot Create model 4400 and I need to send commands to the open interface through Ubuntu. I'm using gtkterm at 57600 baud but when I press play button, it only drives around itself. I have tried to send commands as raw data and as hexadecimal data but it doesn't work.

The Roomba expects binary data. When you type in gtkterm, you are sending ASCII data. (Unless there is a feature of gtkterm i don't know about). For example when you type "128" into the terminal, you are actually sending 3 bytes of data: [49 50 56]. And because many commands of the OI Spec are outside the typeable ASCII range, using the terminal in this manner won't work.

Incidentally, if you go into the menu of gtkterm (or most any serial console program) it can log the entire session to you host PC (which can be attached to the forum more easily than adding to pastebin).

If I change operating procedure and starts the radio device just before the download is started on the Windows machine; the down load starts directly after 'OK'

but that does not work using ubuntu. Using Gtkterm a "BREAK" seems to activate PTT on the radio. So somehow it seems like the Linux/Ununtu version

fails to make the radio enter programming mode but also seem to assert from the download at that point. Possibly this is related to failing to send "BREAK" on the serial device.

So, /dev/ttyS0 as well as all other serial port devices (including /dev/ttyACM0 which is ZedBoard USB-to-Serial port) belongs to 'root' and 'dialout' groups and our user are not in any of them. So, lets add us into dialout, apply changes, check and run gtkterm. Note: you may reboot to apply changes permanently.

To connect with the device boards like- Switch, Ap, etc. previously I used minicom 2.7 in my previous laptop having ubuntu16.04. there I can perform read and write both operations.But recently I buy a new laptop on top of Ubuntu18.04, install minicom 2.7.1 but in my new setup, I have only read access not able to write anything on that board.So I am looking forward to the alternate for minicom. I have tried almost everything but it's not working for me write operations must be there on board. So if anyone has any recommendations for this or have an alternate solution for the same.
