Groupon entered the Indian market through the acquisition of local company SoSasta in Jan 2011.[93] Finally, after winning a battle to acquire the groupon.co.in domain name, the Indian business was renamed Groupon in Nov 2012.[94][95] In August 2015, Groupon gave up control of its India unit to Sequoia Capital and renamed the company Nearbuy.[96] In February 2011, Groupon Russia announced it would join the Russian Company Mail.ru in order to start offering deals on its social network Odnoklassniki. This way, users would be able to buy and share deals from Groupon on their profiles.[citation needed]

One promising trend: Some of ThePoint's most effective campaigns banded consumers together to gain buying power. Mason began featuring a blog that offered readers a different deal from various vendors every day. Having little to lose, his investors encouraged him to pursue the strategy. Groupon--then called Getyourgroupon.com--was born.

One problem with the Groupon model: Anyone can replicate it. More than 200 copycat sites have sprung up in the U.S., with another 500 overseas, including 100 in China. The competition isn't bashful. Many sites closely mimic Groupon's copy and graphics. One Russian site, called BigLion, ripped off Groupon right down to the fonts and colors. (While he probably has grounds for a suit, Mason says going after a startup in Russia isn't worth the effort.) In China a copycat has begun operating at www.groupon.cn, using the same graphical interface. "Groupon is looking at this as a winner-take-all situation, but they may find it tough to sustain their position in every market," says Andrew Razeghi, a marketing professor at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management.

I'm rather sad and mad right now. I purchased tickets in May VIA GROUPON to a throwback concert for The Offspring, Sum 41, and Simple Plan. The concert is tonight at 7 and we were taking our 12 and 14 year old to their first real concert. Everyone was so excited. We were meeting up with other friends who also bought tickets for their families. I pulled up my Groupon and my 4 tickets all stated "refunded." I check my email and no such notification from Groupon came letting me know of this cancellation, which would have given me time to purchase again. Of course I can't call Groupon so I try their live chat. Live chat tells me the merchant cancelled my tickets. I called Usana Ampitheater...the location of tonights concert. They said they didn't cancel my tickets I would have to talk to Groupon. I return to live chat with Groupon. They said the merchant cancelled my tickets because they didn't have 4 seats together. I told them they were general admission lawn tickets. Again they tell me I would have to contact the merchant. So I call USANA again. They tell me Ticketmaster handles all their tickets with Groupon. Of course, I also can't call Ticketmaster (what is with all these places not having customer service phone numbers). I sign in and try the live chat and the next screen tells me, "you don't have any tickets" and won't allow me to do a live chat because I'm ticketless. It tells me to submit a form. Of course none of this can help me in time to get my tickets for tonight. I talk to Groupon some more. They tell me another reason they were cancelled could be not enough tickets. However, USANA still has tickets for sale ($100+ each and I spent $25 each on Groupon). My friends' who also purchased tickets on Groupon all have their tickets no problem. One of them purchased their tickets 2 weeks ago...so if it really was an inventory issue why wouldn't they cancel tickets for the more recent purchasing rather than tickets purchased months ago? I asked Groupon to talk to a manager and they have stopped responding. I opened a second live chat ticket with Groupon. A live person comes within 5 minutes. I re-explained the issue. Asked for merchant contact information and asked for a groupon phone number. They never responded. So 2 live chats in and they won't talk to me. My sister comes over and sees me in tears so she calls USANA and they told her..."This is happening to more people and we just found out that Groupon over sold tickets...no more lawn tickets are available...nothing we can do." So I 100% blaming Groupon right now. Terrible customer service, would not help me nor transfer me to someone who could, cancelled my tickets purchased in May, but did not cancel tickets of more recent ticket purchases (my friend purchased mid-July), did not contact me about cancelling my tickets, would not take responsibility, and then straight up stopped responding to me (and while I was upset and maybe chatting angrily I never called names or was pointedly rude. Just obviously upset with a requests of receiving help). I've turned to reddit...because where else do I express something like this. I looked to leave a review for groupon and I guess I can leave something on trustpilot, but I hardly care about trustpilot reviews. Oh also, when I asked for the merchant they said to contact " The Offspring with Sum 41 and Simple Plan: Let The Bad Times Roll Tour" LOL!!! Okay....let's just go ahead and call The Offspring lol! Anyway, done crying now. My kids are being troopers even though I can see their disappointment. ff782bc1db
