The Good Dinosaur is a 2015 American animated adventure film[7] produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film was directed by Peter Sohn (in his feature directorial debut) and produced by Denise Ream. The screenplay was written by Meg LeFauve, who also wrote the film's story with Sohn, Bob Peterson, Kelsey Mann, and Erik Benson. It stars the voices of Raymond Ochoa, Jack Bright, Steve Zahn, Sam Elliott, Anna Paquin, A. J. Buckley, Jeffrey Wright, and Frances McDormand. The film explores an alternate history where non-avian dinosaurs never became extinct, following a young, timid Apatosaurus named Arlo (Ochoa), who meets an unlikely human friend named Spot (Bright) while traveling through a dangerous and mysterious landscape in order to return home, after being washed downriver.

Development of The Good Dinosaur began with Peterson and Sohn working on the film in 2009 when the former came up with the idea of exploring what dinosaurs represent in the present day and how they are represented in stereotypes. The project was officially announced in 2011, with the release date, plot, director and co-director, producer, and other small details being revealed. During its production, the team encountered various problems, which led to multiple story revisions, as well as changing directors and voice cast. To create a realistic background for the film, the team traveled to various American landscapes, which were later incorporated into the film. Arlo is designed to look distinct and relatable, in order to connect with audiences. In addition, the film pays homage to Western genre in its themes, character representation, and western North American landscapes. Mychael and Jeff Danna composed the film's musical score, marking Pixar's first film to be scored by two composers.

In 2009, when Bob Peterson came up with the idea about what the dinosaurs represent in the present day, Peterson and Peter Sohn started working on the film.[12] Its first release date of November 27, 2013, was first announced on June 20, 2011.[13] The film was announced as The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dinosaurs at the D23 Expo on August 21, 2011, which revealed the plot, director and co-director, producer, and other small details.[14] On April 24, 2012, Pixar officially revealed the film's title as The Good Dinosaur.[15]

The filmmakers wanted to explore what dinosaurs represent in the present day, and how they are represented in stereotypes. Peterson stated: "It's time to do a movie where you get to know the dinosaur, what it's really like to be a dinosaur and to be with a dinosaur." Peterson said that his inspiration of the film came from the World's Fair childhood visit where he gets impressed by "dinosaur animatronics." Sohn described the film's title as "deceptively simple", which "has more meaning than it seems".[16] He additionally explained: "Arlo has a lot of issues when he's born. He's fearful and he's weak and he's disconnected from the family because of these issues and he feels like he's not worthy, and so he finds a way to become worthy."[17]

The filmmakers wanted nature to be the antagonist for the main character Arlo. Ream noted "Nature can overcome anything, including a massive dinosaur." In order to achieve the needed realism, the film's team traveled to the American Northwest, spending time in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Juntura, Oregon, and southern Montana. Production designer Harley Jessup stated that the film "has a fantastic variety of landscapes," which ranged "from the Jackson Valley and the Tetons to the amazing geysers and waterfalls in Yellowstone," as the filmmakers "studied the grasslands of Montana and the Red Desert" and used them to incorporate into the film. To use the landscapes that they had experienced, the filmmakers used data from the U.S. Geological Survey, and satellite images from Google Earth. The geographical data provided a foundation that the team then built on. According to supervising technical director Sanjay Bakshi, this gave Sohn "the freedom to shoot in any direction he wanted to make the world feel big and real." In addition, The Good Dinosaur features three-dimensional, volumetric clouds. In previous Pixar films, clouds have been "painted" onto the sets. Lighting cinematographer Sharon Calahan described the storm clouds "are almost like a villain in the film", and appeared "in almost every scene." Calahan also noted "These particular clouds can be rendered and we can light them, which we've never been able to properly do before."[32][33]

Arlo was designed so that the audience could identify with him and be able to see the "boy" inside the dinosaur.[24][36] Since The Good Dinosaur is set in a world in which dinosaurs never became extinct, they were instead able to evolve. Herbivores like Arlo and his family become farmers, and carnivores like the T. rex become ranchers. Because they are meant to be reminiscent of cowboys, when the T. rex run, their lower bodies mimic a galloping horse, while their upper bodies have the feel of a riding cowboy. To help inspire Butch's physical look and performance, the filmmakers looked at classic film cowboys such as characters portrayed by Clint Eastwood and Jack Palance.[34]

The Good Dinosaur is about a dinosaur named Arlo who is separated from his family after a tragedy occurs. He is a fearful creature who is even scared of a coop of chickens at the beginning of the film.

In this world the asteroid misses Earth and so the dinosaurs evolve into subsistence farmers with corn crops and even a silo. Being fronteirsman it is essential Arlo learn to conquer his fears and his father tries to teach him this.

But the real standouts are the T-Rex family, Nash and Ramsey were fun and likable, but the casting of Elliott as a grizzled T-Rex hombre was a stroke of genius. If the movie does well enough to warrant a sequel, I want to see a film about those three because they really grew on me, and T-Rex is my favourite dinosaur, so double bonus! ?

At Disney World, there already exists two dinosaur themed attractions. DINOSAUR should probably go untouched at Animal Kingdom, but I don't think anyone would mind if Disney did away with Chester and Hester's and replaced it with something worthy and related to the movie.

There's also Ellen's Energy Adventure at Epcot. I haven't seen the movie yet, but as I understand it, there involves a plot with treating nature and some of the dinosaurs are farmers and ranchers. It seems like Disney could just update the existing prehistoric section with characters from the movie while retaining the edutainment aspect, but alas, so many people hate it when characters of any kind are brought to that park.

These backdrops mesh well with the film's more stylized and cartoon-y main characters, beings that were very obviously generated by a computer. Something about the bright green main dinosaur Arlo moving across such precisely maintained landscapes just works, and that's to say nothing of the film's other neat visual flourishes, like a shot of pteranodon wings cutting through clouds like shark fins cresting above the sea.

This one's a bit of a cheat. The Good Dinosaur and The Flintstones don't really have similar stories, but I bring up the latter because it's the best-known example of a prominent storytelling trope: cavemen and dinosaurs living on Earth at the same time.

At the same time, mammals have continued to evolve right alongside dinosaurs, resulting in a variety of creatures that look very much like, say, bison, foxes, and human beings (the latter seem only semi-intelligent and are largely modeled on wild dogs). However, the sole reason for this elaborate setup is that the film wants Arlo to have a little human boy named Spot as his reluctant companion and eventual pet. Spot is undoubtedly cute, but he's basically a dog, as he doesn't speak and communicates in howls. Y'know, kinda like Dino from The Flintstones.

For example, a trio of cattle-herding carnivorous dinosaurs are basically new versions of the vegetarian sharks from Finding Nemo, right down to the way Arlo and Spot meet them. Meanwhile, those swooping, flying pteranodons function as a rough cross between the three-eyed aliens of the Toy Story franchise (thanks to a weird religious code) and the shredder sea turtles of Nemo, until The Good Dinosaur realizes it doesn't have any villains and shoehorns them into that role.

Even the film's single most entertaining scene, involving an incredibly timid dinosaur with a small forest of critters living on his horns, is one you've seen Pixar knock out of the park in its other movies. There's a much better version of this basic one-off encounter in Brave, for instance.

In and of itself, The Good Dinosaur could have been a great "boy and his dog" story, where the "boy" was a dinosaur and the "dog" an actual little boy. The movie contains a few hints of this, particularly when Arlo and Spot are just enjoying each other's company. (There's a beautiful, evocative shot of Arlo tossing Spot into the sky, with Spot breaking through the cloud cover and seeing the bright world above.)

So the film starts off with the meteor that was to have hit the Earth to wipe out the dinosaurs completely skip over the Earth. Over 60 million years later, we see a farmer dinosaur couple named Henry (Jeffrey Wright) and Ida (Frances McDormand) give birth to three eggs, which soon become Libby (Maleah Padilla), Buck (Marcus Scribner) and Arlo (Raymond Ochoa). It is clear form the very beginning that Arlo is different, and not as good of a farmer as the rest of his family, and a lot of this has to do with him being easily feared.

I know that people have often complained about the overly cartoony animation in this film. but I did not mind it. I am kind of glad that they deviated away from the overly detailed designs that dinosaurs usually get. I was very impressed with the texture of the backgrounds and the setting of the film more than anything. 9af72c28ce
