When it comes to transitions and video effects, the video glitch effect has to be one of the most widely-used ones, and if you haven't mastered it yet, this tutorial has everything you need to learn how to add it to your future projects comfortably.

The term "glitch effects" or a "video glitch effect" refer to a specific on-screen effect that simulates a visual bug resulting in distortion of the elements you see, something you would experience when a graphics card starts failing.

Depending on the context, the glitch effect could be made to look more "computery", like the system was "hacked" or there's a virus affecting it, or more "natural", like if the camera was damaged or the colors mixed in an unusual way.

When it comes to video effects, glitch effects are endorsed by video editors due to the many creative ways they can be presented, as there are no "rules" as to how a glitch looks or how it should "behave" when shown on screen.

To do so, open Adobe Premiere Pro, click "Create A New Project" and wait for it to load. Then, import the video clips that you wish to add a glitch effect to. You can do this by double-clicking an empty area in the "Project" view then choosing the videos from your computer's storage and clicking "Import" to finish the process.

In the effect controls panel that's currently open on your screen, move the blue playhead to where you want the glitch effect to start. Then, click on the stopwatch icon next to the "Master Amplitude" parameter which will add a keyframe. Change the value of the Master Amplitude parameter to zero.

Move the playhead one frame forward again and reposition the video randomly again. Then move it one frame forward and reset it again. You can keep repeating this for as many remaining frames if you want the glitch effect to last longer, or you can go with our original concept which is only five keyframes.

This process is very similar to other popular methods for creating a glitch effect, such as using the wave warp effect to create a glitch transition with. You simply add the effect to your video and animate various parameters in the effect controls panel until you get the desired look.

Create an adjustment layer and name it "glitch layer" so you can recognize it more easily. Then, drag and drop it on a video track above the section where you wish the video glitch to happen on your original video.

Where a clip ends and one begins but with a video transition applied. In my videos, most of the time, I typically have 3-5 video transitions. Usually it is only one of those transitions that produces a glitch. They are very inconsistent. The glitch only presents itself appears for a frame or two and at the end of the transition.

I am also having a similar issue. Has anyone got any ideas why transition effects would be causing this strange colour glitch on still images? The images that I've applied the effect to have transparency (if that helps any further). I've tried using both png and psd versions for this - but neither makes a difference to the glitch.

Little late to the party, but make sure your sequence framerate is the same as your export. Mine did the same thing, then I noticed the sequence was set at 50+fps and export was 23.978. After changing it the glitches resolved

I edited a project with the masking effect. Basically I took three different shots and brought them together in the same frame. Then I used the masking effect to cut out some of the background, keyframed some of the background seeping out of the image, then applied a transition effect so the seperate shots enter the frame smoothly. When I play the video back, during the transition portion for only a few seconds, a weird glitch occurs where it seems to duplicate the frames, and then ignores the keyframes for the background to be cut out. Then it returns to normal. I checked in the timeline and disabled different tracks to see where this momentary glitch was coming from, and the individual clips played normally when they were enabled seperately. Another odd thing is I successfully exported the project once without the glitch peresent, however I am trying to export it again in a different format and the problem seems to have reoccured. Anyone know what could be cuasing this?

I did. Oddly enough it seems the only time it exported correctly was when I didn't render that section. However, it seems that trick didn't work the second time, so I tried rendering with the same result. The glitch seemed to come up at a different place in the video when I rendered it however.

Delete your transitions (hopefully they are dissolves) and replace them with keyframed 'opacity' changes in your Effects Controls' panel. One key frame for 0% opacity where you want the dissolve to start and a keyframe at 100% where you want to end the dissolve.

Unfortunately that didn't work. Could it have something to do with the frame hold? Every time the next frame comes on I added a frame hold to the previous video. I even tested out and made a completely different effect, and the same glitches occur.

I'm having a problem with Premiere Elements. My videos keep glitching, and I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. For example, on playback, the frame rate drops a lot, and flashes in different colors of green or purple. The transitions also don't work. The cross dissolve just flashes rapidly between black and the actual video instead of fading. I have noticed that it rendering the video caused some of these problems, and I have also been using higher quality video footage. Premiere is basically unusable like this and I would appreciate it if someone could help, as I can't work on my videos anymore. Thank you. Here is a screenshot of one of the glitches.
