This tutorial is about making simple geometrical shapes with GIMP. I will concentrate on the Path tool since I find it so useful for this purpose. I hope you get some help and new stuff to put in your GIMP Tricks Sack :) I personally use this technique for nearly all my work.

GIMP is mostly intended as an image editing app, but it has a number of different tools for creating new images and designs. There are several ways that you can make geometric shapes in GIMP, but here are three of the best methods available.

The best method to make geometric shapes in GIMP is with the Paths tool. The Paths tool allows you to create a shape by placing anchor points that are connected by lines or curves which form the outer boundary of your shape.

Another thing you can do is export customized paths (using the Path utility) and import them when you need them. It's probably better if you use Inkscape for this. You can also use the shapes of PNG files.

A lot depends on the software you use. Most bitmap software, at the very least will usually let you make a selection (most have basic geometric shapes built in like circle, square, etc.) Simply select the area you would like to keep then invert your selection and erase everything else.

Thank you very much for this :D

Love that you make tut of abduzeedo for Gimp.

Any chance of having the "super cool frilly bits typography" tut translated for gimp?

Keep the great work.

Thanks again

Going beyond just looking at the Text tool, this project is about the complete text handling in GIMP. Examples of what this project addresses are: typographical control to the highest degree; wrapping to paths; arbitrary vector shapes for text boxes; placement and stacking order of multiple text boxes within a layer.

the leading question is whether or how these transformations affect the box, the text or both. a distinction has to be made between transformations that alter the shape of the text-box but leaving the glyph-shapes intact and transformation that affect the glyphs (e.g. 3D-perspective). Users need control over the scope of the transformation.

for rotation the picture is a bit different: Here one would expect box and text to rotate simultaneously, e.g. the box is seen as the orientation for the text. The text is "aligned" to it. Yet (and especially for vector shapes) a rotation of either one, shape or text, is needed.

In the future this issue will gain further importance by text being always editable (and therefore layouted by the text-engine).A transformation of glyphs or stroking them alters the visual size of the text. Line-breaks and wrapping (also in advanced text-element shapes) are calculated based on the dimensions of the glyph.

Often I need to annotate (draw some arrows, lines, basic shapes like squares, ellipses etc and enter some text) on top of pictures (JPG, PNG images) and screenshots (again png images). I would also need to be able to crop, resize etc.

Is there any image editor that allows adding shapes and text to jpg & png files and save the modified file in its place? If the tool can also have template collections (like dia does) for shapes that is an added bonus.

If you want to stay in gimp, you can add boxes and circles/ellipses. Use the rectangle or ellipse selection tool, and when you have the marching ants, on the main menu click Edit/Stroke Selection, then make your line style choice.

There are gimp plug ins to do arrows (that I have not tried), however it took only a few minutes to find a clip art site, copy an arrow image, convert it to a transparent-background gif using these directions, and add it as a new layer to the image. The arrow layer can be moved, rotated, scaled, colored, etc.

Hi Juanita, sorry for the delay in the response, i tested the version on gimp 2.8.22 and works fine, some changes in the v8 code are incompatible with the v7 files, you need to overwrite all the v7 files with the newest in the v8 zip

If you've followed all the steps in this tutorial, now your original texture (that was only a flat grey texture) will look similar to the one shown in picture Final result, where you can see that all three shapes we have drawn look as if they had volume.

The rectangles and boxes are a precious part of any image. It helps us to make quick fixes to a specific part or to draw a structure. The GIMP is a handy and most widely used tool for drawing and editing photos. However, making shapes likes arrows, circles, squares seem complicated until we don't know the proper way to draw.

We have discussed how to draw a line, circle, and arrows in GIMP in the previous topic. In this topic, we will talk about how to draw rectangle, square, boxes and similar shapes. GIMP supports a direct tool called rectangle select tool to draw a rectangle and similar shapes. Drawing a rectangle is a straight forward process. Let's see how to draw different rectangular shapes in GIMP:

Apart from the drawing shapes, the rectangle select tool is widely used for quick fixes, a specific part of the image. We can select a rectangular region of the image and perform several editing effects and filters such as blur, spot removal, color change, cut, crop, copy, paste and many more. It is a handy and most frequently used tool in GIMP. e24fc04721
